Warning/Be aware - Buses replaces trains Bayonne to SJPDP

Time of past OR future Camino
I am planning to walk some of the Camino Frances in (2018).
Just so people are aware there are currently no trains to SJPDP from Bayonne. According to the info boards the train line has been damaged. Therefore, you have to go outside and to the left of the station near the demolished building at Bayonne to catch the train. I very nearly missed the bus as I expected it to pull up out front, I suspect many pilgrims may have missed the bus this morning as it wasn't made clear to people in the station where the bus would arrive.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Thank you for posting the information. I have travelled on the replacement bus service a couple of times and did not find it hard to locate - so many other people with rucksacks boarding made it fairly obvious. Perhaps worth mentioning that you should simply buy a rail ticket for SJPDP in the station and show it to the driver on boarding the bus. No extra tickets required.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

I'm arriving in Bayonne on the 5th so thanks for the heads up. Was the bus running on the same time as the trains?
Line closures happen a lot on this route. When that happens the bus normally sets off from the station at the advertised train time and runs parallel to the railway line stopping at the intermediate stations more or less as timetabled. The journey time is much the same by train or bus.

Thanks for the heads up. I fly into Biarritz tomorrow at 5pm and will be doing the Del Norte so will be looking to get to Irun. I had a bus service in mind but as its I gather a public holiday will be a Sunday Service. My viewing of the French timetable shows I think just one option of a bus at about 6pm. So a train from Bayonne may be another option.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Hi Scarlet Fez,trains directly from Biarritz railway station will take you to the town of Hendaye which is on the border between France and Spain. From Hendaye you can take the Euski Train which is a Basque rail service which will take you to Irun.
To get to the terminus for the Euski train when you exit the railway station at Hendaye turn right and you will see the Euski train station straight ahead ,a 5 minute walk. You can purchase the ticket for Irun at this station. It is very cheap. You can pay at the machine or ticket desk.
Trains from Biarritz to Hendaye according to the SNCF timetable run practically every hour, you can check this on sncf.com
The Euski train Hendaye to Irun is more frequent. The Euski train services the Basque region inc.San Sebastian and Bilbao.
If you are travelling on the 2nd there shouldn' t ne a problem but be aware that the 3

A minor correction, just in case that you want to consult schedules in the webpage: it is "Eusko tren" (with an "o"). Locally known as "el topo" (the digger).
On the other side, from Hendaye, Irún is just crossing the river -not far, really, just half an hour to the "official" beginning of Norte.

Thanks for all your help. It's tomorrow evening the 1st May I was after getting a bus hopefully from the airport. As its a public Holliday I just want to make sure the 816 will be running after I arrive to Hendaye. I will try and consult the timetable Tom.
Want to start walking from Irun on the 2nd.

It is an easy walk from Hendaye across the river to Irun, no need to take a train. Plus, I found it kinda cool to start my walk by crossing from France to Spain again.

Hi, I am starting El CaminonFrances on May 16. And I already bought my train ticket on line from San Sebastian to Bayone and from there to Hendaye to SJPD. Should I go by bus from
Bayonne all the way to SJPD and would I have to pay again???

I met the nicest people on the bus from Bayonne to SJPP. I would be happy to travel this way again.

The bus service from Bayonne to SJPdP is provided by the SNCF as a replacement for the train due to a track outage. So what you paid for the train ticket covers the price of the replacement bus. However, according to JabbaPapa's thread yesterday about the train strike the bus drivers are on strike on the same days as the trains are on strike. I don't know if the 16th is one of those days.

I just tried to buy a ticket from Bayonne to SJPdP today for travel on May 27. Both the bus tickets and train tickets appear to be sold out on GOEURO. If anyone has another suggestion for transfer on this date, please let me know. I have contacted Express Bourricot and am waiting for a reply. Time to start adapting to what comes.

The 16/5 is not a strike day so you will be fine.

Check out the Rome2rio web site Bayonne to St Jean Pied de Port which shows bus availability on the 27/5.
