I need a little inspiration from fellow solitary pilgrims. I am afraid to walk alone. I'm planning my second trip, but it is my first time alone. I haven't booked my flight because my fear is getting control of me. I plan to begin in Burgos in June. I have been to Europe alone a few times and have never been afraid or lonely. But I know this is an emotional journey and I loved the support of a friend on my last walk. Have any of you lone pilgrims felt this way? Thanks for your input!

I walked alone in 2015, and found hundreds of kindred spirits. You'll not be truly alone unless you decide to be. I found I loved my solitary time, even as I walked in sight of many. And I was trepidatious at first...but it didn't last long.

Welcome Lynne, your first post!
Yeah, walking solo is definitely a different experience. There are many advantages, though - especially in the way it allows connection with others. We do that when walking with friends too, of course, but I've found that being a party of one allows deeper connections with a broader variety of fellow peregrinos. If you find you have to stretch out of your comfort zone to connect with others, this is not a bad thing, either.
And emotional support? This will be different too. But you will find it in surprising places - you'll have to. Which may not always be easy, but it's a great gift.

The meseta solo is my idea of heaven. Buen camino, peregrina - may you have a wonderful time!

I've walked solo thru-hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, and most of my backpacking trips, where folks can be few and far between. I never really am 'afraid' to walk alone, but I have had to deal with missing loved ones and comfortable routines.

On Camino, there are too many like-minded folks around to be isolated. Too many fellow pilgrims that willingly lend a hand, or share in conversation. And having a large cohort around you, with the same basics needs and goals, makes it simple to enter into the company of those around you. :)

My first Camino was alone. Which I actually prefer

Depends what you mean by alone.

I 'went' alone. Some days I walked alone, some days not.

But I was never really alone. I met wonderful people and had some great conversations. That doesn't happen as much when you plan to walk with someone.

You may find that some things are easier to talk about with strangers ;)

Hi there
My first Camino last year was the Via de la Plata - supposedly 'the road less travelled'. I went alone with no expectations and with the attitude 'what ever happens is meant to be'. I had the most amazing time and met some wonderful, awesome people. Book your tickets!! You never know what is around the corner unless you go there. You will have the trip of a lifetime!

Hi Lynne!
As a rule, as you're walking the French camino in June, you will never be alone. There will be other pilgrims you can see ahead of you, and others behind you. They will almost all be very happy to talk to you, and walk with you.
It would be very different if you were walking the more remote caminos, such as the Ruta del Ebro.
If it makes you feel safer, just take a strong whistle. If you blow it, other pilgrims will hear it and come to your aid - but you simply won't need it, or use it, on the French route :).
I envy your camino. Relax. Start really looking forward to it, and enjoy it. I wish I could be with you!
Buen camino, and blessings from East Anglia, UK.....

Been walking and volunteering on the Camino since retirement in 2003 but this year will be first time alone. Have some misgivings but am hoping to be alone but not lonely. As now in my seventies I am for the first time having bag moved so will not be staying in traditional refugios. Enjoy !

Most (c. 60%) of my walking has been solo, though typically there have been one or two groups of pilgrims within sight. It is so easy to make friends along The Way - whilst walking, at cafes, and in the albergues. A woman travelling alone need not be afraid. The shared sense of purpose forms a strong bond. In all probability you would find a walking companion easily.

Take the plunge!

on any CAMINO you will never be alone,,,im sureyou will quickly make friends ...or a group of people...who would welcome you to join them,,,,go for it lynne,,,,,best wishes

@LynnR in 2012 I walked with a friend and in 2015 I went back to walk the camino alone. It was different not having a friend with me, but I met lots of people. I found that I enjoyed the freedom of just deciding on my own where to stop, when to start in the morning etc. I also found that I preferred eating at the albergue and there is a list somewhere on this forum of all the albergues that have communal meals.

I walked for a few weeks on the same path that I did in 2012, but I also had a few weeks of brand new parts of the camino I hadn't walked before. It was a nice mixture for me. It sounds like you will do the same.

Don't focus on the fear. Focus on what you enjoyed about the camino and why it is calling you to do it again. I am going on a camino in May of this year, and again I am terrified. But I know that as soon as I start walking the fear will be replaced by incredible joy, wonder and thankfulness that I can walk and be outside enjoying everything and having a fabulous adventure. Just take a deep breath and book your flight. You will be glad you did!

(You opened up to the strangers on this forum and we have rallied around you. This will happen time and again on the camino!)

Don't be afraid of the fear, accept it and it has no power over you. Walk with freedom and the knowledge you have control because you have no control of who you will meet next, when you will eat again, where you will sleep and what pain will you endure. You will meet people, eat, sleep and certainly have pain. Just go and the fewer the expectations and thoughts the greater the rewards of the Camino. It will always give you what you need not what you want.

Hola Lynne, I have walked the Camino 5 times, always with my husband. I leave May 8th to walk alone. Yes I am afraid but not of getting lost or harm. I walk alone to replace the hurts from a abused lonely childhood with new memories. In my heart I fear I will again be friendless and unwanted but my brain knows that the Camino provides and I will meet the best friends ever. I will be in Burgos May 22 and would love to meet you. Buy your tickets and trust in yourself.

I am a solo walker too but i’m Ok with the solitude.

I would recommend reaching out to some other solo travelers here to see if anyone want to meet up to walk together or at least provide some support along the way. As I have heard in the past you will start out with some pilgrims and as you each walk at different paces you may eventually separate and meet up again several times along the way. Buen Camino

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
In 2013 I walked a pilgrimage, I was pretty much completely alone for 3 months. Although I won't really reccomend it, for some reason I'll start another long one next month. There is something about being on your own that makes you realise how strong you can be, and I like that feeling. Makes me feel more confident. I think that, from what I have heard (and I really hope that's true) there are many pilgrims walking the same route and how alone are you then really? I always like to talk to the locals and if there is no one around, talking to myself also helped :) But that was after like 1500 km or so.
After a while, having no one around gave me a great feeling of freedom.

I travel alone, but am seldom short of company if I want it. From my observation of the CF in June, you will meet lots of people, including a fair number of solo female walkers, with whom you can share walking/meals or either. Or neither, if you want. On the trail, you will be unlikely to be more than 5 minutes away from another walker. You have nothing to fear. Buen Camino.

Hi Lynne, when I walked the CF I did it in two parts - i restarted in Burgos for the 2nd part. I was walking sola but always had people to chat to. It took a few days to meet and get to know my regular walking companions (say compared to starting in SJPP when no-one knows anyone starting out) but i had a wonderful Camino. Very fond memories. Be open and friendly but mindful too of your own need for space and you'll find your rhythm and Camino friends in no time :)

Hi Lynne - I am doing a solo walk from Porto to Santiago beginning April 5 - and I can certainly relate to anxiety. I am treating it as part of the journey. Also, reading too much, or over-planning can add to it - and stressing over my packing list is not helping... I hope you go forward with your plans, I am treating this as my Great Adventure. Lois from Canada.

Thank you! Yes- it is in adventure and I’ve realized I need to change my attitude and look st this from another angle. Posivity, adventure, and spiritual experience rather than fear and loneliness!
Thanks for your thoughts!
Have a wonderful journey!

Hi Lynne,

I walked alone last year from Roncesvalles to León. I enjoyed to be alone and never had any issues regarding my own safety and there was always company if I wanted to have it. It is great to walk alone and be able to decide. You will have a great time :D I am heading of again in beginning of June :)

I write as a male who completed the Camino Frances on his own at the age of 61. I was very worried that all these single women would be throwing themselves at me but was hugely relieved to find that most of them were fairly restrained.
There is a absolute joy in having no one to worry about other than yourself. You don't have to wait for anyone else to get themselves ready, or wait for anyone to catch up with you, unless you want them to. You can talk to whoever will listen and you don't have to put up with anyone you don't like!
You will meet loads of lovely people and widen your circle of friends. Going with a companion means that you have the security of constant companionship without the need to talk to stangers. Our pub has a notice painted on its' walls saying "Strangers are just friends you haven't yet met!" There's loads of them there strangers on the camino.

I started my second Camino alone but that didn't last long. I met and became friends with a great group of other pilgrims. Two were were a couple the rest were also walking alone. We had a great time and are in fact still in touch. We have a little whatsapp group we chat on now even though we are back home in all corners of the world.
Also my wife walked Francis alone from SJdPD to Leon where I met her and also found a wonderful group. If you are up for it, I'm sure you will as well.

Hi Lynne;

Based on my experience of four "Camino Francés" I can offer a couple of comments.

First: You will not be alone, there. (Unless you wish, of course.)

Second: There are times that it is wonderfull to be alone. There are things so important that they must be discovered all by yourself- alone.

Buen Camino, Peregrina.

Hello Lynne,

When fear is forefront, it has not been replaced by something else yet, that likely has a greater need to exist over fear. Fear is the ultimate procrastinator. Do you not just hate that word? Procrastinate!!! Planning and going on the Camino is not what a procrastinator does. There is always a purpose, whatever the individual need may be. The way to remove fear is to replace it with that purpose. It has to become stronger than the fear. And you know what the word "fear," stands for? False Evidence Appearing Real.

You have courage. Dig it up and move forward. If you want a partner, I expect to arrive in SJPdP May 6 and leave for Valcarlos May 7. Does that work?

Hope this helps.

Hi Lyn,
As I pack, re-pack, pack my back pack and my suitcase for my later trip to the UK and Eastern Europe, leaving from Australia this Saturday, to walk the Norte solo, I definitely share your concerns especially in light of the Norte being more isolated etc. Also, according to a former post re statistics of how many people walk the Norte ( 12 per day only in April !), I am rethinking whether to do the Norte at all. However, having said that I am determined to start and continue my plan to divert at a certain point across to the Camino Frances, despite former pilgrims advising not to. I want the best of both Camino worlds so to speak- Basque country then a more social walk with more pilgrims on the French way. After a week in Paris & all going well I will head to Irun on Friday April 14th, stay the night then begin walking the next day. Living in Australia I most likely will never return to the Camino so I want to do what I want but who knows things change along the way and that's fine. So, I share your concern re loneliness & safety but it's not going to stop me. If anyone else is beginning the Norte around the time I am starting please let me know or others who have walked solo I'd love to hear from you.

Quite right my friend. My first two walks, Roncesvalles to Sahagun and then Sahagun to Santiago, I walked alone. I felt surrounded by like minded people and had no problem walking by myself or being surrounded by friends.

I am returning April 7th with two friends who wish to walk from Pamplona to Burgos. I will have the best of both worlds. Two weeks with friends and then carrying on by myself when they return home.

Not long now!! :)

I went alone last year but met a pleasant companion on the way. Sometimes i preferred to slow down and meet her later because actually solitude on the path was appealing at times. I am continuing from Pamplona where i left off last year on to Burgos in early July. Alone again but the journey becomes what it becomes. Nice people all along the way so you are never really alone. Don't be afraid!

I completed my first Camino in 2017 during the month of Feb taking the Northern, Primitivo and extension route. I was alone nearly all the time in the Albergue's and walked alone all the time. I actually prefer it, but I'm a bit of a loner anyway, so for me it's not an issue. Although when I first came into contact with fellow pilgrims once the Primitivo joined the French route I enjoyed the company as well. I just made sure I mainly stayed in populated areas once I was done for the day and at least in the evenings there was people about if I wanted to talk etc. I'm sure pilgrims will take to you and on the popular routes you'll be fine. My experience as a whole was one of the general population being very supportive of pilgrims. As someone has already stated use and trust your instincts in any situation.

Good luck and Buen Camino.

My first time to Europe was alone on the Camino. Scared to death! I booked my ticket so there would be no turning back. I experienced loneliness but took it literally one step, one town at a time, and experienced the many blessings of the Camino. I had the time of my life!
I’m leaving for Italy in June- alone and scared to death! I’m not brave or fearless but rather I don’t want fear to keep me from living.
Go! Take your fear with you and leave it on the Camino. It will be an amazing experience!
Buen Camino!

AMEN to that, I tried traveling with others many times, but it just doesn't work for me. Traveling for me is about freedom, doing whatever you want whenever you want. It's very hard to be free while waiting for a friend who wants to go in yet another tourist store with the same stuff you've seen so many times. I just like to 'go with the flow'. Like a hippie!

I walked the Via Podiensis (Le Puy to Cahors in 2016 and Cahors to SJPP in 2017; two stages because the blisters were just too much my first time out). I started each time alone but I never ended alone. Met some wonderful people on the way (French Canadian, Dutch, German, Belgian, British and French). Occasionally walked alone. Occasionally felt lonely. So many lovely and helpful people on "le chemin". But absolutely loved it. Hope to pick up from SJPP this fall.

Hi there. For me there was no other way than to walk it alone. My husband accepted this (despite his tears when accompanying a "little old fragile looking lady" to the airport, Melbourne, Australia) and those who didn't understand, never have understood me. The departure day was my 65th birthday present to myself. I did have other concerns. To combat these I wrote a list then took time to examine each. What was the underlying fear? What could I do to minimize the fear/anxiety? That helped enormously. The journey was amazing: exhilarating, challenging, joyful, tiring, uplifting. You name it (the emotion); I probably felt it. But regret? Never. Not even when the going got really tough and the loneliness momentarily threatened to 'undo' me. It's not for everyone, this going it alone. And of course the times that you are truly alone are not frequent, or long in duration, unless you choose them to be so. Being solo, without being conscious of sending out any 'signals', folk, or an individual, seemed to gravitate to me at just the right time, for a chat, for company, for solace and/or support. Other times, for similiar reasons, I found myself more open to others; a group, a pair, an individual. The first time, 2014: 3 months in total from my home base including 65 walking days from St Jean to Muxia. And...next time? I'll go solo again. Best wishes.

You can do this. I’m flying from Australia alone and setting out from SJPDP june 2 nd. Just assume you can do it and that there will be plenty of people around and after the first few days you will find your feet and courage. You’ve got this!

When people ask if I was alone when I walked in 2015 I tell them that I traveled alone but I didn’t walk alone. Nobody need walk alone. I forged lifelong friendships on my first Camino. I will again travel alone on my 2019 Camino, but I don’t expect to be alone or lonely.

Lots of people have the same feelings as you - so don't feel alone in that way! You walk alone but you are never "on your own" don't feel you are isolated you are never more than a few minutes from other Pilgrims who are always open to company. buen camino

I haven't done a solo Camino yet, but I'd like to. I think you can be more impulsive if that's the word, when you are on your own. Its harder to schedule changes when they are more of you.
I'm dreaming more and more of doing one on my own.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I wish you well! I am up against similar fears for similar reasons, so to read that made me feel not so alone. so thank you.
Thanks for understanding. I also feel alone but you give me hope I will meet a kindred spirit on the Camino. The Spanish call them twin souls.

Hello Lynne,

Just checking in to see how you are doing? If there is anything thatI can help with, please let me know, either here or private PM.
Hello. Thank you so much. After reading several responses I booked my flight and will leave on June 4. There are several factors that make me feel anxious. Some of it is being alone and some of the issues are the emotions and struggles I bring with me. How will I process everything without a friend? My decision came at a time of peace, so I figure there will be something on my journey to help me. I'm thankful for the support of this forum. Thank you again!

Absolutely. I felt that way on my 2016 camino. But, in four weeks I am returning to where I left off. Will the fear of being alone be gone? Probably not at first, but it is not fear of harm and so I will overcome it. You will too.

I love your response.... I will overcome the loneliness too. I booked my flight. Thank you!

Thank you for the support. I am looking forward to my journey in June and I look forward to this experience.

Thank you for that. I decided to book my flight and will leave in June. I wish you well on your next camino.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
You can do this. I’m flying from Australia alone and setting out from SJPDP june 2 nd. Just assume you can do it and that there will be plenty of people around and after the first few days you will find your feet and courage. You’ve got this!

Thanks for your message. I booked my flight and will begin in Burgos on June 6. We will be a few days away from each other. If all goes well while I am on my own, I plan to do the whole walk in another year two. Good luck and Buen Camino.

Excellent. That was beautiful. Thank you for taking the time to write. I booked my flight after reading so many inspiring and supportive messages. I'll walk from Burgos this time. Next time, if this walk goes okay......the whole distance.
Thank you.

Hi Lyn,
As I pack, re-pack, pack my back pack and my suitcase for my later trip to the UK and Eastern Europe, leaving from Australia this Saturday, to walk the Norte solo, I definitely share your concerns especially in light of the Norte being more isolated etc.

I have booked my flight and will leave my home on June 4. Good luck to you and thanks for the message!

I'll be walking in mid-May. I will technically be alone too but I'm confident that I will have plenty of company along the way.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Hello, my fears are similar. I leave May 8 from Seattle but I hope we connect along the way. I am the woman with a big smile and a sunflower on my cap.

I will arrive in Burgos on June 5th, although I think I’ve already started my emotional journey. You know what I mean? The anticipation is part of the pilgrimage. Thank you for responding and I hope you have many joyous moments in your walk. Too bad we may just be missing each other.
Buen Camino to you!

This makes me think of two Hebrew words for fear. One is pachad, that is the imagined reptilian brain irrational fear when we are out of our comfort zone. The other, Yirah is the kind of exhilaration/fear when we are standing on sacred ground, awe that is scary in the good way, that asks us to step into something bigger! Walking the Camino alone is (and was for me last Sept.) the latter. It was the richest journey I’ve ever taken and it’s true at that time of year you’ll be alone for 5 minutes only if you want to be. I met so many incredible people I would never have met if I was with someone else. It’s brilliant- I’d totally step into the fear and take the leap!!!

I have walked alone and with a friend. As many people have stated walking the CF you will not be alone at all. In fact, I think if you leave yourself open to everyone but still walk your own Camino at your own pace and terms you will meet some amazing people who you may know for an hour, a camino or a lifetime who will be there when you most need to speak or to listen. You may even end up on the other extreme, like me. I may never walk the CF again as it is way to crowded for me. I am walking Norte this September hoping for more solitude than I found in Portugal and hopefully as much solitude that I had walking from Le Puy. There were days on that Camino I didn't see a pilgrim or speak to anyone the whole day. The solitude is what I seek now. I meet wonderful people at night in Gites and Albergues. Love that and love walking alone. That is when the stuff in your soul and spirit starts moving and you can stop thinking and start feeling and all the crap can drain out of your brain and body.

Hi Lynne R.
I walked the first 600kms from St Jean this time last year alone. At no time was I concerned for my safety and, to be honest, it was lovely not to have to worry about anyone else except me. I very close friend joined me for the last 200km into Santiago but we didn’t walk together. While it was lovely to share the Camino with a special friend I loved the time alone. Good luck and buen Camino xx

I am super paranoid, but love traveling alone. I feel like the Camino is one of the safest places to be solo. You’ve got a ton of comments here, but a little advice that made me feel much safer:

1. I never started out from the Albergue before the sun rose unless I could walk in a group
2. I always tried to be able to see one person in front of me and behind me at all times, the Camino is so crowded this wasn’t really hard for the majority of my Camino
3. If you ever feel unsafe, don’t be afraid to latch onto another pilgrim. It isn’t a weakness to ask for help. Have some basic Spanish phrases written in your guidebook in case you need help from a local (ie “I feel unsafe,” “I’m hurt,” or “can you call the police”)

I LOVED walking alone and only felt unsafe once when a drunk guy kept hitting on me. Other pilgrims walked with me until he left. I think everyone should try to walk the Camino alone so good for you! You will also likely join “Camino families” along the way, maybe one the entire trip or several. I still suggest trying to walk alone during the day because that’s how you rest your brain and do all the thinking. Then meet up with your Camino family at night at the Albergue.

Also I get severe homesickness every time I travel alone ( a combination of jet lag and not eating enough usually). I actually ended up bursting into tears in front of a stranger who ended up telling me exactly what I needed to hear at that moment. We’re still in contact today. The Camino provides so if you’re lonely, it will bring you people. If you need emotional support, someone will give t to you.

Have an amazing time! Buen Camino!

Thank you! And when do we really know what we need anyway? I always need reminding of these things. Thanks!

I agree with feeling homesick. I know that will hit me several times, especially when I'm not near anyone I know. It will be a blessing and a cross to bear for sure. Thank you!

I'm travelling alone now too Lynne. My friend has had to cancel. I'll be starting from SJPdP in a few weeks so might see you on the track in June :) I'm looking forward to a balance of solitude and connection with other pilgrims.

Sorry to hear your friend had to cancel, but obviously you were meant to make this trip alone. You'll be good. I still feel a bit anxious at times, but I'm looking forward to the adventure!!
When do you leave? I will arrive in Burgos on June 5th.
Thanks for the response.

I was having panic attacks a few months ago every time I started a long walk but they seem to have gone now (cross fingers!) I'm at peace now and have come to accept my solo journey. You may be right, maybe I was meant to do this alone?
I leave Melbourne, Australia on the 17th May. Plan to start walking from SJPdP on 20th May (another fingers crossed I can get there with the current French train strikes going on!) I just had a quick look at the Brierley guide and will probably arrive in Burgos the first few days of June...but I know I'll be a s l o w... walker. Keep in touch :)

Bib, I am a 59 yo female of average fitness. I followed the Brierley guide and divided some of the longer stages into two days. I did not want to do myself an injury.
Pick your pace.
Buen Camino!

Wow, thinking the same thing! I've walked the Portuguese twice, w/my husband and then my 20 yo son. Was on a time constraint the first time and fractured my hip on my second and was out of commission by day 7. So now, I am walking my third w/two newbies who want to walk the Portuguese. I just made their travel plans today and now am feeling very anxious to book my own. Deciding whether I should do the Portuguese again (with them) or walk a part of the Frances alone? I love being alone also, but it's different when it's at home in familiar surroundings huh? Trust that you will be fine and meeting new people in now time, if that's what you prefer. I pray that you will continue your plans and as I remind myself, "Difficult choices are almost always the best ones"! Bom Caminho/Buen Camino

Hi,
I’m in Pedrouzo ( Santiago tomorrow) after completely the Camino Norte (first Camino) solo and whilst it would have been great to have close friends with me, I’m glad I was solo for the majority of the time anyway. I met some really nice people, especially in the initial stages. I don’t think you will have any trouble meeting people especially on the Frances as there are way more people than on the Norte; got a shock how many as today walking from Arzúa I was surrounded by them. Travelling solo requires you to take risks, one of which is to take the lead and approach people & if it works out great but don’t be put off if not, just try again tomorrow. You will never know unless you give it a go !

You’ll be fine, just go for it ! What’s the worst that can happen ? In my experience as a female independent solo ( most times ) traveller over many decades, the strength I have gained, lessons learned etc has helped me throughout my life in so many ways. I too,at times, get scared but there is always a way out, meaning that things work out in the end. Give it a go and remember we learn by our mistakes so don’t worry everyone makes mistakes. Good luck and just do it !
