What language to post in?

This is basically an English language forum but speakers of other languages are welcome to post in their own language.

However it will be polite, helpful to the majority of readers and also probably mean that you get an answer to a question more quickly if you post an English translation below your message.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Easiest way to implement this would be to have an "other languages" board. I am a native German speaker, so I would be happy to help out with that part ;-) SY

I think it would be nice to also post in other languages in a separate part. :)

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
....AND how could this be handled by moderators, not to mention Ivar?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Wait until one of the many Coreans start to post comments on the perfect kitchens of albergues, such as Guacelmo in Rabanal del Camino!:p

Thanks to the many French speaking pilgrims I met on the French Way in September-August this year, I found the joy of speaking French. Thank you all - especially Justine! Why not post (display?) In other languages too? It's good in the spirit of the Way, right?

Translated by Moderator 'cos the postee doesn't seem to have read the OP.

Oh, sorry, you're right, I didn't read carefully. Apologies, I probably had some ego going there. And I am still on my post-Camino high. But, I truly did value sharing the Way with so many others from so many cultures, and if there is a francophone thread started, I will be in it for sure.

Weil dann viele hier aus dem Forum dann Beiträge bzw. Antworten nicht verstehen, u.a. auch weil beim Schreiben Gestik und Mimik fehlen, die im direkten Kontakt beim gegenseitigen Verstehen helfen ;).

Because then many here from the forum are not able to understand answers, plus in writing gestures and facial expressions are missing which help a lot in direct contact to understand each other.

J'ai trouvé que j'ai parlé plus de français dans le Chemin Français (ironique?) que l'espagnol. Il y avait plusieurs pèlerins français que avaient commencé avec le route Le Puy que parlaient pas anglais.

I found that I spoke more French than Spanish on the Camino Francés (ironic?). There were quite a few French pilgrims who had started at Le Puy who didn't speak English.

C’est genial de revoir le Francais!!!

But I cannot produce the accents in French, nor the Umlaute or sz in German, so I stick to English on this forum...
Neither can I...but there are some good points made on how can a forum be moderated in so many languages but...it still is lovely to see French again!
I guess that’s why English is the default language and, I know from another thread how difficult it is if English is not your first language and how well that particular member does!

On my computer, I can produce accents and Umlautes by holding down the key instead of taking the finger straight off. Above the letter I have typed, a selection of accents miraculously appears, each with a faint number next to it. Still holding down the key, type the required number and voilà! you have what you want! Try it and see.

Sadly, I don’t own a computer and my phone (like my brain sometimes) works by steam! 😂! Understanding is what is important I guess!

I can do that on my iPad and differently on my computer in mails and Word, but not in the texts of this forum.

Very true!

Just been trying to figure out how to add accents on my phone - an honor 9 lite. Seems like I have to change keyboards or languages or something - I'll have to ask tech support (aka my son) how to do it!

I know this isn’t related to the (very) pertinent question but I hope you don’t mind me sharing this story, and it relates to the difficulty when communicating in a language other than your native tongue!
My wife, myself and eldest son stopped at a beachside restaurant to get a lunchtime dinner! The elderly owner spoke no English and my Spanish very rudimentary and self taught. The menu was three course and selected from a board displayed on the beach..we were the only diners!
He proudly displayed all the options and I explained (or so I thought) that we only wanted a main course dinner (no starter or sweet to finish)
All went well and the chicken meal served and the plates removed! About 5 minutes later another three dinners arrived with the chicken cooked differently. We sat rather surprised and because communication was a problem..politely tried to finish the second dinner. When I looked over to the kitchen area all I could see was the owners (and wifes) heads watching us in amazement!...crazy English!!!

I learned so many things while walking the Camino... one of them was this practical item: on my Samsung Galaxy 9, I can change language keyboards very easily, by pressing and sliding the long 'English' key across to 'Français.'(see the language displayed centre bottom, between the comma and full stop marks). To enable this choice, I first had to add français to my languages, via Settings, but I only had to do that once and now my keyboard is bilingual! I can SMS, email, Whatsapp, write on this Forum, with all the correct accents and diacritics. I am going to add Spanish, now that I have so many new Camino friends.

I use the Swiftkey keyboard on my Android phone. With Swiftkey, you don't even have to manually switch keyboards. It does the switching automatically when you type in another language that you have added to the app.

Just as a follow up. We are delighted if you post in your own language but please follow this with an English translation.

This is especially true of non-western alphabet languages which moderators cannot recognise and which if not accompanied by a translation will probably be deleted.

After some weeks I'm back to this forum and notice that the german sub-forum which used to be here doesn't exist any more. Am I the only one who doesn't find it or has it been removed? Right now, as www.pilgerforum.de doesn't work since months, I just wanted to have a look if there's a german community here.
