Accommodation costs Seville surprise to me

As I plan to be somewhere on the VdlP during Semana Santa 2019, I have been scratching out a list of my rough stages.
I purposely planned to arrive in Seville over a week ' before' the start of the holy week to avoid the higher costs anticipated over Easter.
During my researching I had been putting dummy march dates into booking dot com site to get an idea of prices and they seemed to be in line with prices quoted by others on earlier threads here on forum.
Today though., I decided to use my actual planned dates for Seville 5 and 6 April.. and as you've probably guessed, they are mostly double the price of March rates. So I've decided to book only one night in Seville centre, and 2nd night in Santiponce (in The Hotel Anfiteatro Romano' this also had increased but only a little. It is E42 for the night. I would have booked both nights there but it was booked out for 5th.
Some of the other places I was looking at in Seville apart from being double or almost to March prices, did not have free cancellation. Therefore first night 5th April, I've booked Hotel Alcantara ( E85 night). Both these bookings have free cancellation., so if something else pops up before then I can opt out.

I have read again and again that Seville would have higher rates over Easter but wanted to give anyone else starting early, 'a heads up' that this can extend over more than just the Easter period.. I guess all April must be considered Easter for booking purposes? .
Looks like March would have been the better month to kick off in Seville. (for cost of accommodation that is).

I will be in Merida around 16th during Holy week and wondering if the Albergue will be difficult to find a bed in. I will be checking hotels there to possibly make a booking.

Good luck with your research. Are you using booking.com or another site, or are you contacting the lodgings directly? During the summer I booked a number of places directly. The owners prefer that, as they are not then charged by the agent such as booking .com. Of course agent sites need to make their living as well, but the customer can choose how to select which route to go.

Thanks Kirkie
I agree that contacting directly is the better way to go...but it's not always easy to get the direct contact info. In 2017 I had owners of a place on the Ingles advise me to cancel my booking with booking dot com and I would get it cheaper with them direct.
I hesitated though as I thought I'd end up paying twice, as it was actually too late for safe cancellation. However booking dot com didn't charge me.
I have made my Seville bookings with booking.com.. but with the free cancellation.
Some of the hotels I was looking at came up as 'non refundable'.. so I bypassed them.

I've just made a booking for Merida for the 16th at Hostal Senera . Free cancellation but advice on confirmation is that this applies only up until 12th.. (I’m used to 24hr notice ).. By the way.... the inflated prices don't appear to have hit Merida over that period. This is during Semana Santa and rate is E30 (slightly above prices quoted by Sara Dhooma and gronze but pretty good for Easter)..

Yes, it can be difficult but if you have any Spanish, or friends who can speak Spanish, that makes it easier to go direct. You appear to be fairly on the ball so I have no doubt you will manage to get the best option for your purse. My experience last summer was local, in Ireland, but the system is the same. When I next walk, I will not have that problem, as the plan is for albergues without booking ahead. No dates yet... wishing you all the best, and buen camino!

my actual planned dates for Seville 5 and 6 April.
That's a weekend, so prices are often significantly higher.

I use booking.com usually as well for my long distance reservations, since the convenience and hassle-free cancellation are worth it to me. Maybe you could use that as your secure backup plan, then get your flights confirmed, then shop around by direct contact with lodgings, and finally cancel the booking.com if you get something better.

My flights have been confirmed for months (since aug2018).so dates are fixed. Agree good idea to try follow up direct to lodgings but safe to have secured something for arrival.
Thanks for your assistance too offering your stages etc.

@kirkie Spanish is so so., and I can cope ok making calls and general (slow) communications..
I will be using albergues a lot I hope, but felt it may be safe to have secure accommodation on arrival after long haul from Oz. Some good advice received was that accommodation may be overloaded over Easter. Better finding out now though.

Thanks for your advice.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
I had the same booking issues with The Invierno and I managed to barely get the last rooms during the first 10 days of our walk starting on Ash Wednesday. And that’s a hardly traveled Camino!

Something to consider here is that sites like Booking.com are able to track who is looking at accommodation at certain destinations for certain dates. If you use the same machine over several days to repeatedly to search, for example, for hotels in Seville on April 10th, their website recognises this and 'adjusts' the prices of the hotels on subsequent searches, causing you to believe that availability is the cause, when actually it is not.
To avoid this irksome phenomenon, access the Customise icon on your Google Chrome window and select option 'New Incognito Window'. A new session will open that allows you to browse Booking.com and other such sites without them knowing who is doing it.

Isn't this a variation on the urban myth about airline prices changing, depending on your searches? The air ticket prices and hotel prices are quite stable for me.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

€60,-
I guess you have to make your own decision. I haven't heard the urban myth concerning airline prices, by the way. However, I remain unastonished concerning the cynicism of companies selling me their products and services via websites.

Start as you mean to go on. If you don’t mind sharing a 4 or 6-bed dorm you could stay in Triana Backpackers’ Hostel for half the price and with free cancellation. It’s clean, safe and welcoming, and convenient for the VdlP. Check out the Hostelworld.com website.

I would keep an eye on prices in Salamanca too, especially if you end up there at the weekend/during a festival. It was one of the few places where it would have been far easier to book online rather than arriving at a hotel, asking for a room and then being turned away for being a single person/being asked to pay an hugely increased rate, etc. Awesome place though.

Yes I can recommend Tirana - we got a twin room, there, v.friendly,too.

Have you tried Airbnb? I was looking at prices for Seville for the period you are booking a few months ago, holiday rather than a Camino, triana seemed to booked out on many nights and hotels were charging at their special events banding which was higher than Alta. When I looked at Airbnb I realised it was possible to go very central and still relatively cheaper.

Hi musicman
I had heard many reports that’s its hard to get a peaceful nights sleep though. It will be my first night after a long haul (more than 24 hrs from Oz) and also a Friday night., otherwise I’d give it a try.
Thanks for input though as helpful for others reading

Good thought.
I’ve used air Bnb before (in Switzerland - wow you know expensive in Switzerland/ makes Seville Easter rates look good )
I’ll check out Seville for sure though.
Thanks

I also have used Triana in Seville and thoroughly recommend them. They put me in a ground level room reserved for pilgrims only so if we wanted to leave early it was convenient. They are also super helpful and friendly with information, an official credential. When the buckle on the waist belt on my backpack broke there, the man on reception insisted against my wishes on cutting the buckle of his pack and fitting it on mine.

I have heard that hostals etc do not give all their rooms to booking.com but keep some back to sell themselves to avoid paying a fee to booking.com. Can anyone confirm this?

Hi David.. thanks for your thoughts on Triana. Re your question about lodgings still having rooms free when booking dot com is sold out.. You are correct. They may have more rooms available on eg.. Hostalworld or on their own site etc. Booking dot com are not given full control of their accommodation..

That is generally true. I have never gotten a lower price as a drop in than was posted in booking.com. The rates there seem to be pretty honest.

Whilst I would agree with you in most cases Falcon... I have experienced personally (on the Ingles in 2017). a hostal advising me to cancel the booking.com arrangement.. They charged me significantly less. Probably due to the fact that I called them about a pick up from the camino and they knew I was a peregrina

I agree. It is commonly said here on the forum that you will get lower prices by contacting the lodging directly. I have not found that to be the norm but admittedly I usually chose the convenience of booking.com. On one occasion in Spain, my drop-in rate was higher than what booking.com offered me an hour before. I didn't argue since I decided it was fair that sometimes I "win" and sometimes I "lose" when I choose how to make my reservation.

Occasionally a place will offer a special pilgrim price that you can't get online. If this is really important, then you might need to trade convenience for the saving in cost.

I used Airbnb to book a private room in an apartment in Seville for E30 a night in 2014. If you don't mind sharing the bathroom with the host, this might be an option. I stayed for a week and the host let me use her kitchen and washing machine. She even gave me a ride to the bus station on the last day. Airbnb is a great way to meet locals.

Hola, I am staying in the Hotel Anfiteatro Romano in Santiponce. I walked in and got a top room for €32. After walking here from Cadiz the full lenght bath was worth that.
Last night in Sevilla, I walked into the Oasis Backpackers and got a bunk for €14. That’s a nice hostal.
I would also recommend the Hostal Triana in Sevill. Very good place and pilgrim friendly.
Good luck with Sevilla over the Easter period.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I echo those recommending Airbnb. That's what I did in Seville, and I just checked, and the place I stayed is E30 on April 5 (not avail April 6 though). I hardly saw the host (it was during their festival), but he was helpful and it was centrally located, and I didn't have to deal with snorers on my last night before hitting the Camino :)

Best of luck whatever you decide, and buen camino!

they are mostly double the price of March rates. So I've decided to book only one night in Seville

You have got plenty , about time you spent it ;)
Have a safe and enjoyable VdlP
Will write to seek advice on Ingles after X rays this week ,
Happy New Year mate,

Ha ha David Ditto to you..
I’m an Oz but it must be my Scottish heritage is strong . Unlike my children I prefer to spend wisely. Ha ha. But agree to spend it and keep Spanish economy running is a good plan. On last camino (Invierno) - I did the private room 100% but want to experience more of the camaraderie of communal along the Vdlp where playing safe with the Easter booking arrangements isn’t necessary.. I am luckier than many I know. Rather give it to someone who needs it though than live the high life (all the time).

Good to see you ‘appear ‘ David. Happy new year to you and yours and pm me re the Inglés.

Buen Camino
Annie.

Edit: I am appreciating all the good feedback and ideas about the plata but original post was also to point out to anyone thinking about being in Seville or the plata ‘around Easter /Semana Santa ‘ period to be aware of the rate hikes due to traveller demand.

@OzAnnie (and anyone else) looking for AirBnB accommodation in central Sevilla (10-15 minutes walk to the Cathedral), PM me. I'll put you in touch with a Spanish friend who rents out parts of his home. There are several bedding options (from a quirky attic to a double room) in his lovely house. Cheers, Grace

I am wondering this too. We plan to be in Santiago de Compostela on Easter and I tried booking at Seminario Menor through a number of booking sites inc. ones for hostels. All the rooms were taken. I checked the Seminario's website and found over 77 beds open, and rooms as well.

Hello from Seville.
I always recommend people not book places to stay during Easter and the spring fair (feria). Unless absolutely must do.
About every hotel, B&B, room etc are booked solid. And yes they do jack up the prices during these two great events. Holy Week and Spring Fair in Seville.
I recommend you try to find a place to stay outside of Seville.
I do not recommend Triana BackPackers.
Not a good place for a walker. Party place.
Possibly time your arrival so you can walk out of the city? Then stay somewhere outside of Seville?
Even stay south of Seville. i.e. Jerez, Cadiz, Puerto, etc then ride early bus into Seville to start your walk?
I know of a "dorm" at one of the schools. I will look the name up and post it.
The students will be on vacation during Holy Week and Feria.
Kinda of spartan place but does not cost much

Hello OzAnnie! We are leaving from Seville on the 4th of April! (found a reasonably priced hostel: SevillaDram Hostel. I believe they have single rooms too)

Hi to you (both?) @P Rat
Always exciting at this point isn’t it .
I don’t fly in until 5th and expect to take very very slow days at first to get through the jet lag.
I’m expecting to look round Italica at Santiponce on Sunday morning and head to Guillena for that evening of the 7th. I’m sure you’ll be a bit ahead but you just never know.
Buen Camino

Tks for you advice

Don't look under "most recommended" in Booking.com. Instead click on the "Lowest Price" category. A bunch of hostals in Seville will pop up, with the right prices. Some of these hostals even have private rooms. The first one on the list is most used by pilgrims. They will stamp your credentials too. The location is pretty good. Definitely stay in Seville through several days of the holy week. It's an experience not to be missed.

More: I stayed at the Nuevo Suizo (1,500 feet from center). Pretty good place. The placed I mentioned before is the Trianna.

I stayed in Seville Saturday night and Palm Sunday night 2017. I looked back through my records, but didn’t record the hostal name. After looking at Google Streetview I THINK I found it. It’s on Calle Adriano only a few blocks to the Cathedral. Triana is on the other side of the river. It was probably on hostalword.com (but didn’t look again). Pretty sure it was not Hotel Adriano, which is close by. Click on the first link. Can’t make out the name on the enclosed link, but it must be the ‘pink’ entryway. From Streetview you can see the small balconies on upper floors. It was an average hostal, w/breakfast, not expensive as I recall (especially at Holy week). 6 people per room (3 bunk beds), mixed gender. But the best unexpected experience was the three processions that passed the balcony late at night – it’s on a wide street. It’s absolutely NOT to be MISSED!! (second link)

I only book the first night in Seville, SJPdP etc and then wing it. It would be impossible for me to guess when I'll pass through Merida, and hate the thought of fixed dates and bookings.

Yes...it is true. Accommodation providers may only release a limited number of rooms for booking.com (& the like) to sell. This is easily verified by checking B.com & then trying an alternative booking site (eg hotels.com) or the provider's website directly. Booking.com used to say 'Sold Out' but have subtlety changed the wording to
'Sold Out on Booking.com' meaning potential availability through another avenue... I use B.com as my 'go-to' for accommodation on all my trips but always check other sites & if a particular accom provider has their own site before making my reservation. 9 times out of 10, I go with B.com
If not the cheapest, sometimes its worth a few extra €€ for convenience, customer service, speed & removal of language difficulties.
Happy trails 👣 🌏

Oh Lordy...! I'm heading off to walk the Via Francigena from March but am already brewing plans to walk the VdlP & Camino Mozarabe in Northern Hemisphere spring 2020. Obviously with my upcoming trip I haven't started looking into it, but all this talk about Holy Week (which I hadn't considered) is bringing back the issues, hassles, stress & anxiety of walking The Way of 88 Temples in Japan during the dreaded Golden Week! Prices at least tripled & were sometimes 10 fold the normal rate. Planning & booking ahead can save a mountain of grief when actually on the ground. Good luck with it OzAnnie...I'll be using your experiences to help with my planning next year 😊
