We are starting the CP from Porto on April 5th and want to get there 2 days earlier. Can anyone suggest a good alburge near the Cathedral?
Thx

Hi, there are no pilgrim albergues near the cathedral, only backpackers’ hostels, of varying quality. I’ve tried a few, just because they are cheap, but wouldn’t recommend any of the ones I stayed in. For a quiet night you are better off in a pension, if you want to be near the cathedral. I now always stay at the Gallery Hostel http://www.gallery-hostel.com/en/ which is nowhere near the cathedral, but which I can highly recommend, and no need to book one of their private rooms either, as the dorms are great.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

Wow, thx folks🙏
I’m just going to bed in Arizona USA and it looks like you’all at getting up!!!
Have a great day.
Blessings

Stayed at the Yes Porto Hostel in October.
Well run, 4 bed rooms, wrist band security to get in the front door and the room.
Great mix of pilgrims, and travellers of all ages.
Good evening meal and breakfast extra as well as a good kitchen.
Good location, could see the tower from our room.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I always stay at Grande Oceano Guest House - great location in the centre, friendly staff, very clean and comfy rooms, and inexpensive. When booking, better ask for a room overlooking the backyard (much quieter and with a great view). No breakfast or kitchen, but the excellent Leitaria da Quinta do Paço is just a couple of minutes away, and I highly recommend it for its eclairs and breakfasts :)

I did the Portuguese route from Lisbon in the winter - so it was very uncrowded at that time of year. I stopped in Porto for three nights to recharge my batteries and to take in the culture. I stayed at the Poet's Inn which is less than a mile from the Se Cathedral, but right on the Camino. They have cheep shared accommodations for 15 Euros and private rooms for 40 Euros. They have this cool literary theme -so my room was not numbered, but named after Edgar Rice Burroughs who wrote the Tarzan books, I am an art buff - and my absolute highlight in Porto was the National Art Museum - here is a description from the book I wrote. The Soares dos Reis National Museum was founded in 1833 by King Peter IV, who took the throne from King Miguel I. Despised as an autocratic dictator, King Miguel I was later stripped of his wealth, including his private art collection. That art, along with art taken from convents and monasteries, became the foundation of the museum’s collection. While there was some art from the last one hundred years, much of the collection was from 1820–1920, including works that fall into the Mannerist, Expressionist, and Impressionist schools. I loved how quintessentially Portuguese the art was. Unlike American and English portraiture, in which the subjects were all fair haired and rosy cheeked, these Portuguese subjects were olive skinned and had the blackest hair, moustaches, and beards. The paintings showed daily life: women harvesting grapes, men fishing, matadors taunting bulls, shepherds tending sheep, and guitarists playing fado music.

I agree, spend a day or better yet, two in Porto! It is a fabulous city with so much to see. Also, walk along the river out of Porto to Matosinhos. It was very beautiful and serene and will add a half day to your walk. Here are my stages on the coastal, starting on day fifteen from Lisbon. You can see how beautiful our walk was out of Porto. Ultreia!

I was recommended the Best Guest Hostel - http://www.bestguesthostel.com/en/hostel-in-porto/. I haven't stayed there but it is where I'll be staying when I start in Porto next year. It's close to the station and the Cathedral and looks like good value.
FWIW I stayed in Best Guest Hostel a couple of years ago for two nights at start of my camino and thought it was possibly the nicest commercial hostel I have stayed in anywhere. Ever!!!

I just stayed this past October in the newly opened "The House of Sandeman Hostel and Suites" over the bridge in Vila Nova de Guia. I would most definitely give them a 10! The cost for an 8 person mixed room was 20euro, including bkfst. Staff was exceptional, location great and right on the avenida. Will be staying there again soon. Have a wonderful Portuguese camino and be sure to take the "Variante Espiritual" in Pontevedra, magical!

The Blue Sock Hostel was a good place to stay in Porto. It's a block from the Ribeira (and riverfront restaurants with Francesinhas.....), close to the Cathedral, and in a nicely renovated building with Portuguese tiles on the outside and stone walls on the inside.

We also stayed at the Blue Sock Hostel. We liked the pod beds with curtains, plus you get linens and blankets. Decent breakfast and they have food available all day. It wasn't the cheapest place, but the location near the river was good. Shower facilities were decent too.

Rather quaint. Excellent buffet breakfast. I found a great offer, for 2 nights, prior to beginning to walk to Santiago.

Ha! Looks my kind of place! The Australia reference also pleases me.
