St Jean Pied du Port Booked...anyone staying at Gite Ultreia on Sept 8th 2019?

So one more milestone achieved...!

While I like the idea of just winging it and giving control over to the Camino, with two teenagers in tow, one must plan a little. So I have booked the Gite Ultreia for our first night in SJPDP on Spetember 8th 2019.

We are a lovely (but I am biased) Aussie family with two kids who are somewhat excited about the camino ( my 15 year old daughter is not so excited ...yet) and I would love to hear from anyone else planning to start the Camino in St Jean on the 9th of September, with our without kids and whether staying at Ultreia or not...

I love making connections with others and thought I would start the ball rolling.

cheers
Alex.

Sorry Alex, I'll be about 2 weeks behind you.

I stayed in a lovely home in SJPdP with a fellow pilgrim I met at the train station in Bayonne. He called and got me accommodations. This was March 2018. Unfortunately due to the boots I chose, along with relentless weather conditions, my Camino ended on day 7 in Torres del rio with Achilles tendinitis. I flew home (wheelchair) and couldn’t weight bear for 3 weeks. After many months of recovery, grief, self reflection and reading “I’m Off Then” by Hape Kerkeling, I hope to return for the month of September 2019 - picking up where I left off. Hape has given me a very different perspective in approaching this journey! Buen Camino NancyLee from Canada 🇨🇦

Buen Camino! I wish you and your family the best ever experience. What a gift to be able to do this while young. We are starting (our first) on Sept 12 and will probably be much slower than you ... but you never know. One of the things that really pushed me to walk the Camino was seeing a few families with young children doing so while we were traveling in Spain several years ago. I too was surprised at how booked SJPDP is already.

Hi Alex
I am booked Orisson on September 8 after 3 nights in SJPP, staying at Bellari. I am from Qld, so will keep an eye out for you. I’ve also booked Roncevalles for the 9th. I’m flying in to Paris. :)

I stayed there at the beginning of my Camino. It's a lovely place! Buen Camino:)

Me too. Last October. Nice spot with a good breakfast available in the morning before I headed off. I had the mens 4 bedroom on the top floor to myself that night. Was a nice spot, v central and I’d recommend the restaurant directly across the street (go for the basque menu-lovely).

I knew you came from Canberra Alex 😉🙂😊
And my wife reckons a "Chalkie" by trade ??😇
Its a good place , dinner at night will be communal table and the reason / reasons why you are doing this Camino.
You will meet 20-30 and i believe there will be kids present
We have stopped there when doing the Camino and also when using as a stop over from Le Puy and each time there were families.
You will get the inside tables and room ...gresat.
Your daughter will by Pamplona have a very different perspective of this ,
Watch her horizons expand within a month and
Make sure she keeps away from those Spanish Uni kids on the path with guitars 🙄.
Your lives will change , it will be a great experience.

thanks for the reccomendation... I will check it out

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
Could I suggest you rest easy now that you’ve made those bookings? One thing is certain - there will be people to connect with once you get there!
good advice Kiwi-Family..hubby agrees with you so I am going to relax now and the Camino come to me..;)

Hi Thornley, ...actually I am a public servant - but in an Education role, so close!;)
I am sure my daughter will adjust, shes a rather cool little human though ocassionally prone to typical teen girl poltergeist changes...

I'll keep her away from those spanish boys indeed...and she will have her brother to help protect her - unless she annoys him on the trail and then its every man for himself...🤣

Bring on September I say !!
