Giving away 1 set VF Maps for France

I no longer need my maps for the VF in France (Calais to Besancon.), so I am offering to give them (as a set, not individually) to anyone planning that walk, if you are willing to pay mailing costs from Melbourne (Australia) to your address. The package weighs 700gm. Payment will have to be by PayPal.

The maps available are the IGN TOP 100 Series 1:100,000 (1cm = 1km) as listed below. Only one map is missing, for a small part of the VF route in east France. I did not think it was worth buying that map to use only a small 'corner' of it.

· Map 101 (Lille Boulogne-Sur-Mer)
· Map 103 (Amien Arras)
· Map 104 (Reims Saint-Quentin)
· Map 110 (Reims St-Dizier)
· Map 120 (St-Dizier Chaumont)
· Map 130 (Vesoul Langres)
· Map 137 (Besançon Montbéliard)

My VF route is shown in yellow highlighter on each map, but the maps were only used at home for planning, not in the field. They are in very good condition.

This website will give you an idea of the coverage of the series: http://www.stanfords.co.uk/France-IGN-100K-Top100-Road-Maps-of-France_SI00000297

If you are interested, send me a PM in the forum stating your country and town. I will work out the mailing cost and let you know. If you decide it is too much, that's perfectly fine. If there is more than one person interested, I will deal with them in sequence starting with the first PM.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-
Yes please...hope I'm in the queue of prospective recipients! 😁
Thanks for the generous offer...no matter who receives them, I'm sure they'll be of enormous help.

We are thinking 2023 for the VF. (retirement beckons)
And a highlighted route. Luxury!

Can I form a very slow moving (and not very serious) queue for these?

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

€149,-

What a generous offer. Any prospective VF pilgrim should seize it!

I already have two people interested, one from Australia, the other from New Zealand.

Please don't send any more PMs.

Best wishes

The maps have gone to a wonderful lady in Tasmania who will be walking the entire VF in March.

Sorry I had to disappoint others who were interested.

G'day BobM, good on you for sharing your maps.

My wife and I are walking from the VF from Canterbury to Rome starting in April and from what I have read (older blogs etc) the way signage in France is limited before Besancon (?). I have the Cicerone guides (1&2) and Lotus Maps with GPS coordinates which we plan to use in the field.

I was just wondering what you used in the field and your thoughts on the France way markings.

Regards, Risky

Bob, Without wanting to embarrass you (well...maybe just a little.. 😇 ) by doing this in a public forum, a big 'Thank You' for your kindness & generosity in sending your VF maps to me. Not only will they be invaluable with planning but as a solo walker, they will provide reassurance through the navigational challenges of the VF in France.
Thanks again...I'm very appreciative 🤗

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
I used the three guides by Paul Chinn and Babette Gallard that cover the entire VF and have GPS data as well. At that time I used a Garmin GPS unit. Nowadays I prefer to use LocusMap Pro as my main navigating app because of the high quality of its maps. They are fully usable offline - no internet connection required.

BTW, Paul Chinn also uses Locus Map Pro for his cycling guidebook to the VF.

(You mentioned 'Lotus Maps' in your post - I assume you mean Locus Map?).

You can see Paul's offerings at: https://pilgrimagepublications.com/pp_2014/via-francigena/ Babette Gallard has also written a general guide to the VF. It's worth buying to supplement the purely practical information in Paul's guides.

Paul is very helpful, and he 'saved my life' at short notice a couple of times while I was walking the VF.

I know Alison Raju's Cicerone guides. They are also very good, but different in style to Paul's guides. It's a matter of personal preference which you like.

I also paid a few dollars in Australia to have my guidebooks spiral bound. It's definitely worth the cost, I was able to fold out my book completely flat at the required page for use in the field and put it away folded open. In rain it was easy to use the folded flat book in a plastic envelope.

The Confraternity of Pilgrims to Rome (UK) is another invaluable, up to date resource that is worth paying to join. They have a good accommodation list that I found very helpful. They are quite active.

As for route markings in France, at the time I walked some years ago route markers were far and few between and often related more to the French Grande Randonnee routes that approximated the VF. I never relied on them. Preachy Alert! - I think it is always better to navigate independently and just use waymarks as an error check. Pilgrims who might have walked only the Camino to Santiago have a luxurious profusion of waymarks but that is far from the case on many other pilgrimage routes.

Anyway, I hope that is of use. Yell out if you want more help.

Well, it was nice to help you out, which was the prime motivation. Walking the VF was a significant life experience for me, so it is good to put something back.

G'day BobM,

More than helpful with your information. Thank You. Yes...…..Locus Maps. The guide books are Ebooks so will not have to worry about binding etc. We usually try not to overthink / plan our walks and go with the flow once we start but in looking at the French part of the VF thought we had better get some resources and do the research...….as you say it isn't on a GR and it looks like the accommodation staging will be more considered...…….but that's all good and why we like the less traveled ways.

Thank mate...……….bon chemin
