VF query - ostello in Orio Litto

2024?
Starting the full VF from London (Pilgrims Way to Canterbury) in about 6 weeks time.
Just a quick query...or two...for those who stayed in Orio Litto.
1/ Now don't laugh, but...is a sleeping bag required to stay in the Orio Litto pilgrim hostel? I noticed in Efren's (Gonzalez) brilliant vlog that the beds looked already made up.
So far all the places I'm particularly looking at staying (incl albergues, hostels, etc) will provide bedding. Even though I do have a sleeping bag, I'd prefer not to take it for little-to-no use. My walking motto is 'travel light, comfy at night' & unless there's no choice, I usually avoid dorm-type set ups (doesn't work for me) but would like to stay at Orio Litto for Po River access the next day.
2/ Once again, for those who stayed at the OP in Orio Litto, did they (staff, Mayor) book the Po crossing with Danilo for you? Or did you phone (or get someone else to...) earlier than just the night before?
Many thanks! 👣🎒🌏

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

I had already phoned Danilo before I got to Orio Litta but without a doubt Pierluigi would do it for you! I brought a sleeping bag which I used remarkably little. I stayed alone in Orio Litta which had over 20 beds I think. You can stay in lovely bedroom in the tower looking up at wonderful old beams if you are the first (or only). There were two beds and another two on lower floor of tower. Then a larger dorm area downstairs. It’s an old building but very modern on the inside. There was bedding and I imagine there were blankets though not necessary when I was there.

Thank you so much for the info Tim...I hoped you'd reply but wasn't sure if you were still away. You were the one who originally let me know (others mentioned it after) about the OP in Orio Litto & were there the same time as I will (should!) be.
Good to know about your sleeping bag usage...bit of minor route tweaking & I can avoid taking it. I have a sleeping sheet & can always just 'layer-up' if I need to. I saw blankets on the beds in Efren's vlog.
Great tip about the tower bedroom too..thanks.

Staying at Orio Litto, did you take Danilo's 9am boat or another time (your request/decision or Danilo's?)?
Thanks again...I very much appreciate your input. 😊

Yes it’s 5km or possibly 6 from Orio Litta to the jetty. A very easy walk in the morning with sunrise around 5am. No problem getting there for 9. I was meeting others who were staying at the accommodation next to river. But if I were going again I’d choose Orio Litta again. It’s a very special place, even alone. And has washing machine! And you can borrow a bike to explore the town - there’s a supermarket about a mile away.

Excellent...sounds like a winner to me! 👌
Love practical info & details.
Thanks Tim. 👍

Depends on when you think you'll get there. As I recall the bed covers were quite thin.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

€149,-

Thanks Harington. All being well, I should be there around the third week of May. I'll have a sleeping sheet & can do the layers thing if necessary. 😏

Orio Litta is a very fine ostello. I used a liner but don't remember if I needed a blanket. It was warm at the time. Someone in our little group or Mayor Pierluigi called the day before with Danilo who in general is at 9.00 at the ferry. I estimate the distance to the ferry is about 4 kilometers. Be careful when you leave Orio Litta. The footpath leaves the tarmac road and follows a green road which is much shorter than the bike road. My fellow pilgrims almost missed this road as there are also VF signposts on the tarmac road. I had spotted the footpath the day before when I made a little tour with one of the free bikes in the basement of the ostello.

Great info! Thank you Carel5. This section with Orio Litta & the Po crossing is sure to be a highlight of the VF. I'm also a big fan of doing a 'reccy' prior to setting out for the day...can save a lot of time & unnecessary distance. 🙂 👣 🌏

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I'm also listening to the advice given above. I have read in a 2018 blog that some ostellos in italy don't like sleeping bags, but they like it when you have a sleeping sheet. I'l take both as I like to be warm at night.

a question about the po crossing. (if someone has answered this on the vf forum, I apologise, I'll look there also.) is there only a morning ride or is there also an afternoon ride?

In general there is only a morning ride at 9.00 a.m., but ferryman Danilo only shows up if you phone him the day before. Maybe he makes a second crossing if there are more pilgrims about the same time in the day, but it is improbable that he makes a second ride just for one passenger.
