If you've dealt with this before, what did you do? My Treksilk 100% silk liner came in today and I'd read that it's good to cold wash it asap because, sometimes the color bleeds. Other's said to wash it in cold water with a cup of white vinegar and/or salt to prevent the dye from bleeding...HAH, I say! I'm running it through its 3rd cold water gentle wash cycle and it's still bleeding. Help, please.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

What color? I have had certain red items be incredibly volatile in the past and take several washes to get them to set. Do you see washing it being a common occurrence?

As long as you don't wash it with your clothes, it won't be a problem on the camino.

I doubt if many liners get washed at all whilst on camino.

@NorthernLight,
I knew better than to do that. ;) I'm just trying to get it out now so that, I don't wake up with dye bleed on me.

Well, make sure you don't sweat in your sleep ... 🙂 Okay, overheated dorms, perhaps not possible.

I'd just keep doing what you're doing and washing it until it wasn't bleeding much. Adding salt might just delay the bleed rather than set the colour.

Well okay...I'll trrrryyyy not to sweat. You might just be right about the salt and delayed release!

Rum, I have the exact same brand in super Orange. Took two washes (I used warm water), in the third it stopped leaking colour everywhere. I am quite dumb about fabrics and not sure if i could have damaged it, but the sleeping liner survived :)

Thank You, @Anamya! I'm on the 6th with cold water. I really appreciate this info because, I don't want to damage it either. Well, maybe this info will help another person with the same issue of dye bleeding profusely. ;)

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

I've only washed a liner on Camino after bedbugs, and it did run profusely - but now I know it is better not to use water to kill bedbugs and instead put things dry directly into a hot commercial dryer (they get hotter and thus kill bugs more efficiently) and also dry air is less likely to damage silk and wool. So I doubt I will be washing a liner while actually on the Camino again.

Camino clothes and fabrics often end up a kind of dirty khaki grey. Lots of dirt and rather poor hand washing. If you throw things into a mixed bag of washing with other pilgrims, your silk liner will not help the process!

Thanks @Kanga...I won't be doing that and, thanks for mentioning bedbugs. This is a pre-permethrin spraying wash. Honestly if this liner holds up for 6 weeks on Camino, I'll be very happy...I only used my sleeping bag one or 2 times on the Portuguese and don't plan on bringing it again.

Throw it away !
Imagine what it will do to the contents of your pack if you were stuck in heavy rain .
You really need a commercial mordant to fix the dye but frankly add this to the cost and inconvenience you have already experienced and it doesn't make a lot of sense . An Albergue owner might not be too happy with their sheets stained either , sweat or not just the heat and pressure of a sleeping body is enough to transfer colour . I hate wasting things and this situation is unfortunate but it just might be a case of giving up on a lost cause .

I certainly wouldn't take it, if it keeps bleeding! Thanks though, the thought of tossing it back in the mail is a definite possibility.

A selection of Camino Jewellery
That's why I ordered a light-gray one.
Rich colours are bleeding from silk a very long time. You have to wash blue-, red-, yellow- and green-coloured silk several times. After the fifth wash you can rinse it with vinegar (1 spoon on 5l) added to the rinsing water. That will most of the time (depends on the used dye) stop the bleeding and will fix the colour to the silk.

But even my light gray TrekSilk liner bleeded a little to the rinsing water, only to be seen b/c I washed it by hand in a white sink.

Hope my tip will help with the Liner.

Buen Camino!

Interesting. I only ever use liquid Woolite to hand wash my silk bag, squeeze and gently tumble dry - never had a problem with shrinkage or dye bleed, it's a deep blue colour and have never woken up like Britons of old: blue from head to toe. It's now 17 years old and still in good condition.

As for ironing it . . . ROFL!

Thanks for this information, @Roland49! It should be listed on the item description but of course, isn't. Doesn't sound very promising but, I'll try the vinegar again, as it's 8 washings now. If that doesn't work, back it goes.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
We live and learn... If we live long enough...and pay attention....we become brilliant!

I vote for replacing the nice pink one with something more practical and less likely to bleed, like a natural shade or something less neon colored.

The comments above are mostly spot-on.

Now, I just learned that permethrin will not instantly kill bedbugs therefore, won't be spraying.

I believe it WILL quickly kill them (unless they are a resistant) but only if you apply directly to the bedbug - i.e. douse them with the spray. It isn't certain whether (or when) they will die from being wrapped in permethrin-sprayed cloth. I expect it would depend on the concentration, etc.

It is also not proven if permethrin is at all effective as a repellent, but that is what most people seem to hope for.

I have that liner, in the same vivid colour. I've had it for a few years and I don't think it bleeds any more. Although it bled in the first few washes, it never left stains on my sleeping bag or on me. I'm very happy with it - it's a good product and super-light.

It took persistence (and several, kindly written etsy messages with photos) to finally have SpiritsofVietnam to agree in sending me a white silk liner as a replacement. Whether I get it or not remains to be seen but, I believe they'll make good. :)

Cold water wash is not the thing to do at the beginning. Soak it in hot water with dissolved salt(without iodine!) for about 30 minutes. Then hot water wash and rinse in a machine. Then hot dryer. Heat is what sets the dye along with the salt. Cold water washes are not ever going to finish the job. You wash it in cold water after the hot processes.

Thanks @Currie! Too late for the first yet, taken well into consideration for the next.

Just wash it with something white that you want to remain white I guarantee that all the dye will come out in one
