Rain delay?

Time of past OR future Camino
Future Frances from Saint Jean Pied du Port to Burgos, starting in June.
Bonjour from rainy Bayonne.

I was planning to start my journey tomorrow or Sunday. It's pouring rain today. Pouring. Should I wait longer, maybe Monday for the trail to dry out a bit before beginning?

I've also heard there is a market on Monday in SJPP. Worth seeing?

Thanks for your advice and tips.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

€60,-
If you have time, you could try waiting. But in truth, that kind of rain is unavoidable on the Camino, especially in the Basque country and in Galicia. There will be rain and there will be mud between where you are right now and Santiago. But do you have decent raingear? If not, definitely go get some (there's a good shop near the Cathedral).
The market in SJPP is nice, and you can get some things to munch on while going up the hill.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Just start walking. The weather is just something you have to endure and boy can it rain in Galicia. I never minded walking in the rain, even when I met a guy coming up the trail towards me in Galicia. He was carrying some planks, hammer and nails. Said his name was Noah 😂 😂 . In the Pyrenees it can be a cold rain and I was ok with that until I fell in a river just before Espinal. If you wait for the conditions to be right, you might never reach Santiago. I have been too cold, too wet and too hot and mud on the Meseta too deep but dont get me wrong, most of the time it was just right.

If you have time you can wait for clear skies so you can get a view of Spain when you cross over to Roncevalles. I've crossed when it's fogged in, and while it's mysterious and beautiful, i'd rather have the view. -- You can make good use of the time by trotting up to Orisson
and back down to get in shape. ;)

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.

Thanks for the advice. I bought a jacket today and I'm in SJPP. Merci!

I agree with most of the above posts. I hate waiting for the "when will the rain stop". Some of my most vivid, memorable and exhilarating experiences were walking in the rain...seriously!
I encourage you to just go with the "flow"!

All will be well .. you will carry that jacket over to Roncesvalles and into gorgeous weather and eventually wonder why you carry the extra weight, but the day you discard it it will rain for a week !! 😂😂 (or not).
Hi David,
Remember your post re the "best poncho in the world" from IKEA?
Now there's a heatwave coming I believe
So will we take them on the Invierno on Monday???
Yes we will
No we won't
So on and so forth!..on and on!
I've squashed them into a sandwich bag...small..not too much weight ...
Will decide tomorrow but I bet that if we leave them here it will rain...and rain
If we take them......full sun for 12 days!!
Always the way.

@Annette london
Often after massive heat waves come thunder storms and heavy rain. Be prepared!
Hi Fleur
Remember that song..."Sunshine after the rain"??
Hope it will be so!
Were almost in Ponferrada....and it's pouring rain!!
So thank goodness for the "best" ponchos in the world!!
I believe it's very hot in London right now!!!!

Hi Annette. Feeling thunder here in the London area. Rain and heat coming over to us now.

Try and stay dry , Ponchos rule O.K.

Recommend Albergue Leo in Villafranca.

Hi Fleur,
Good weather coming here I think

We're walking the Invierno Camino this time so won't be going through Villafranca
Hoping to get to Santiago in 12 days walking
We are following in VNs and Caryns steps
Have you read their daily reports
I won't be doing a live post but will post in a few weeks

Hi Annette

Enjoy your Camino it's not one I'm familiar with so I shall read reports with interest.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
