JennyH94 asked for some help in finding locations used in the film "The Way", starring Martin Sheen and directed by his son, Emilio Estevez. I put some answers on her post, but I thought it might help her and other "tragics" if I provided a list of all the locations I have been told or found by myself. In looking at the film in such detail, I found several occasions when the pilgrims (Tom, Joost, Sarah and Jack) were walking in the wrong direction. There are other scenes that occur in the wrong order. The well known one, Albergue Orisson, has been acknowledged by Estevez, who said that they noticed it too late, as the film had already been sent off to the distributors. I do not want you to think that I am criticising the film or ridiculing it. I enjoyed the film and felt it represented the Camino Francés pretty well. I walked the Camino Francés twice from StJPdP and the Arles route from Lescar before I saw the film. There are some question marks in bold in my list. If anyone knows where these locations are, I'd be pleased to hear from you.
The original times are from my recording of the BBC broadcast and seem to be only approximate (not to the second). Add between 1 and 4 minutes to get the times on the Youtube version.
I've added some of the Youtube timings in bold.

Thank you so much Bert 45 for your kindness in sharing this information with Forum members. It's terrific research and will be very useful when watching 'The Way' again ... as many of us love to do! Several years on, it remains one of my favourite movies.
It also provides an added dimension to the experience we have of the particular places on the Camino that were featured in the film.
Best wishes and thanks once again, from Oz -
Jenny

Ditto to Jenny's comment.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
We have stayed at Hotel Akaretta twice. The second time was after the movie had come out. Stayed in the same room as"Tom".

Hi Bert45,

Wow, that is quite the list.

I wonder if the vlogs of Efren Gonzalez may help with some questions regarding church spires etc? He has a channel on Youtube called "SummitXtreme," where he offers 37 days of vlogs as well as a separate seven part series of all his professionally done drone footage, separated by Province.

Hope this helps. If not, I am certain the drone films will provide exceptionally new points of view.

NOTE: Due to questions since this post was written, I have created a second post below with links to the Daily Vlogs and the Drone Videos mentioned above.

Thanks for that, Michelle. Did you mean SummitXtreme? I put summit extreme efren gonzalez into the search bar on Youtube and got something, but I don't know if it's what you meant. There was lots of flashing imagery -- a good job I don't suffer from epilepsy -- and a few fantastic drone shots of some churches, but not the one I am looking for and it was not separated by province. Could you send a link to the one you meant?

OMG. U know I really enjoy this film. I've watched it 10 times. Walked various Caminos 6 times including French way last sept/oct. I enjoyed the scenery and picking out locations of the movie as I walked. As anyone who has worked even for a brief time on a movie set will tell you no movie is made in a reliable or truthful manner. But to take time out to number and list all the errors in this lovely film is truly amazing. But...please go and walk the Walk again and just smell the flowers!

Thank you so much for this. The place where Jack says, “You can thank my credit card “ after Tom leaves the police station is in Torres del Rio.
I'm sure you are wrong there, Mike. If you go on Streetview and find the police station in Logroño (Calle Ruavieja 47 - it's actually Ruavieja 47, but Google doesn't understand Spanish street names) you can see the wall that Jack is leaning against -- that of the church of Santa María de Palacio. why would you think that it's in Torres del Río?

If, by "please go and walk the Walk again", you mean me, and if you are suggesting that I have spent too much time in listing locations and not enough time "smelling the flowers", I would remind you that I walked the Camino Francés twice from St Jean PdP and once more from Puente la Reina before I saw the film. I have done most of my research sitting at my computer after I had smelled the flowers. I also said I enjoyed the film and felt it represented the Camino Francés pretty well. I just think that it is interesting, no more than that, when you have walked the Camino Francés, to be able to make the observation that they are walking in the wrong direction or that some scenes are out of sequence.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Thank you so much for this. The place where Jack says, “You can thank my credit card “ after Tom leaves the police station is in Torres del Rio.
Pardon me, but are you sure about this location? I have the DVD and in the commentary feature they refer to these sequence of scenes. If I recall correctly that scene (Tom thanking Jack) is back in Haro (they did a lot of cutting between the two locations). They explain that yes they are "filming walking backwards", but often its the only available light, or else (again for film purposes) the east bound direction is a better fit - eg O'Cebreiro where they are walking out of the village back to La Faba!!

Hi Bert45 - I searched under, "Summit Extreme Camino."
Here is the first installment of the daily logs starting at SJPdP
Here is the first of the Drone Videos, which include a lot of churches and surrounding town shots, as well as countryside;
As these links are the first of each series, further videos should load automatically. They do for me.

"If I recall correctly that scene (Tom thanking Jack) is back in Haro (they did a lot of cutting between the two locations)." No, Saint Mike II, you are definitely wrong there, as was Rhysmike. Tom thanks Jack, and Jack replies that Tom should thank his (Jack's) credit card right outside the police station in Logroño. They did not do any cutting between the two locations, apart from the one cut from Haro to Logroño. They were in Haro when Tom got drunk, two policemen picked him up and grabbed him by the arms and exited stage left. The very next shot is from inside the police station in Logroño, looking out through the arch to door of the church of Santa María de Palacio, where we later see Jack leaning against the door jamb as Tom, Sarah and Joost exit the police station. There are no further shots in Haro. Thanks to Streetview I have identified the two-second shot of the statue of a saint at 1:18 as being over the door of the church of Santa María de Palacio.

Thank you, Michelle!!! I've only watched the first day, so far, and I'm so impressed with his photography. How does he control the drone so well? It doesn't look as though he has a screen in front of him, but perhaps it is part of the control unit -- I know nothing about drones. He's not afraid to admit it when he's wrong, as when he thought he was in Spain, but wasn't. Btw, cal me 'Bert'. The '45' I added as 'Bert' was already taken as a user name.

I took a photo near the arch where Tom comes from, Jack is on the other side of the lane when Tom approached, in To
I'm sure you are wrong there, Mike.
This picture that I took in Torres del Rio in 2016 shows the arch where Tom walks through after being released.
One thing to keep in mind, there are different versions of the movie. The one that I saw on Netflix in Japan had Daniel in the end sequence and he doesn't appear in the Australian version, and there were many slight differences in the scenes throughout the movie. The Way Tom comes out of the police station.JPG

How come Daniel was travelling with two jackets, one blue, one yellow/orange?

Daniel was wearing the orange jacket when he disappeared into the mist.

Tom pulled a blue jacket out of Daniel’s backpack, so, as the film proceeds, Tom is wearing the blue jacket.

When Daniel appears later in the film, he is wearing the orange jacket (as he was when he disappeared).

It defines them both.

Jill

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
This picture that I took in Torres del Rio in 2016
You took the picture in Logroño, please compare it with the StreetView shown below. Police station on the right, church Santa Maria de Palacio on the left. Torres del Rio has a very different church (Santo Sepulchro) and does not have streets with big buildings like Logroño.

I love the film. My brother walked the Camino after my son Daniel died in 2013.
So it has a very special memory tagged to it.
My Brother died on the Camino too in 2013 he had reached Triacastella. Has anyone seen the statue of Daniel with the animals in the church in Portomarin.i would really like a photo of it please anyone.

I'm quite certain that this is where the "Thank my credit card" moment was filmed. In Logrono. That's me, at the backside of S. Maria del Palacio, staring at the arched entrance to Logrono Police Headquarters.

Incidentally: when the players all march up the Calle Ruavieja from this location , they are seen to turn left and then vanish off screen. That left turn is bogus. There is no street there!

Exactly, Jill! Everyone tells every newbie to pack light, as light as possible. If he had followed such advice, Daniel would not have had two jackets with him. I'm sure it was done for the purposes of the film. If Daniel had had only one jacket, orange or blue, and Tom had recovered it from Daniel's effects, they would both have been wearing the same colour jacket in those scenes where Tom 'sees' Daniel. It looks much better on the screen that they are in contrasting colours.

It's true that there is no street there, but see the people sitting on the footpath (sidewalk)? They are sitting outside the Albergue Municipal, which is where the group disappear into. Thank you for supporting me, rappahannock_rev. Whose fingers spoiled your photo?

Well, that was easy to find ;): movie screenshot, reverse search in Google Images, and up comes the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in La Briñas, so not on the Camino Francés.
BRILLIANT!!! Thank you Kathar1na. Unfortunately I don't have the film on DVD, only recorded on my HDD, so I couldn't do the reverse search. I have used the Google image search a couple of times and not found what I was looking for except once, after much searching through the images suggested by Google. That also solves the location of the steps and bollards. I could have been looking at locations on the Camino Francés till the cows come home and not found them. I will edit the list with an acknowledgement.

Hi Joan
Nice to hear from you again. Alas I don’t have that photo, but if I ever walk the camino again I will make a point of taking one for you.
I wonder if you could ask on the thread named Class of 2018? I’m sure there are pilgrims walking this year who would be happy to take on this quest for you.
Buen camino, Joan.

Hi Bert,

As you go through his vlogs, you will see he does have a rather compact controller in one hand, usually. It incorporates a smart phone. it is quite ingenious how they can match external electronics with the attributes available on a smart phone.

Last trip, I left my phone at home. Not this year, lol.

Thank you, @Bert45, but there is no need for a special acknowledgement and I found it actually by sheer luck. I thought the steeple was in Logroño so I added it to the search parameters and for whatever reasons Google Images also showed images of the church in La Briña, which stood out with its two towers and small cupola. Otherwise, trying to identify a steeple is like trying to find a needle in a haystack.

But the church in Briñas does not have two towers. Were you thinking of the church of Santa María de la Redonda in Logroño when you wrote that?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Yes, spot on! Not always easy to keep all these memorised images of so many churches apart :).

A version of The Way is available in Spanish on YouTube. You have to add a few minutes to what @Bert45 has for a time to get to the same scene in the YouTube video. After the .com/ insert this: watch?v=OA6aq85WhXU

I like the scene where Tom's pack is handed back to him at the gate leaving Burgos (at 1:34:38 on.) A few seconds farther on the Camino and they past the small Hotel Puerta Romeros where Peg and I spend a night. Very enjoyable.

I live in the area and I can confirm that this photo was indeed taken in Logroño. It's the HQs of the Policía Local (local city cops) on a street called Rua Vieja which is perhaps the oldest street in the old town of Logroño, capital of La Rioja. In fact, this street was once a part of a pre-Roman throughway that crossed Logroño when it was a Celtic settlement of the Berones tribe.

The Way: Additional recognized locations some of which might be redundant. I’m not a “caminante” of the Camino but as I live near the camino along the banks of the Upper Ebro River, I thought I might add some notes. I’m referring to the time counter on the movie “The Way” which is on YouTube under channel name “Jorge Pebre”.
01:24:22 That’s the road just outside of Briñas along the northern bank of the Ebro river and they’re walking in the wrong direction into Briñas. As I live in this area, I have indeed seen a Spanish pilgrim coming from Vitoria-Gasteiz on his way to Santiago. As an aside here, in the high medieval ages, round the year 1000, the original “Camino Francés” did not go through the Province of la Rioja (Comunidad de la Rioja) but came from Pamplona, through Vitoria-Gasteiz, a very lovely city, and further westwards towards burgos. The trail here in this scene is an agricultural road which is also used for hiking and mountainbiking and connects the village of Briñas to the medieval bridge of Briñas which is actually just outside of Haro in spite of the bridge’s name. In the old days, people walking from Haro, capital of Rioja Alta and the wine capital of Rioja as they boast, had to cross the bridge in order to get to the village. This is off-Camino of course.
01:25:59 Additional note- Once they cross the Arco de Santa María, which I call La Puerta de Castilla (the door or gate to Castile), they approach the magnificent gothic cathedral of Burgos which was the fist gothic temple built in Spain in the days when Burgos was the seat of Castilian kings. The first stone was laid on 20 July 1220 and it took 39 years to construct the cathedral, quite fast for those times.
01:37:32 Entering Hornillos del Camino slightly southwest of Burgos
01:38:32 Areal view of Hornillos del Camino
01:39:01 The trail they are descending reminds me strongly of the trail that leads up to the hill over the town of Labastida in the Basque province of Álava (Rioja Alavesa), only ca. 3.6 km east of Briñas.
01:39:16 Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced on the old road to Logroño (Carretera de Logroño) just across the old town of Burgos on the southern banks of the river Arlanzón. BTW, just a few yards to the right of the church as you face it, there is a lovely gourmet restaurant called “Cobo Vintage” which boasts 1 Michelin star. The Chef there is Miguel Cobo, a native of Burgos who’s been featured on some local tv-shows. The food is pricey but amazing.

Attached photo: the lovely village of Cellorigo in Rioja Alta not far from Haro (CVNE Winery). It's in the Obarenes mountains which separate La Rioja from northern Castile (Miranda de Ebro in the Province of Burgos).

The left turn is not bogus because there is an albergue there, so they are going into their hostal. In fact, there are 2 right at that corner, but it seems they go into the first one.

01:15:25 That landscape you see of the vineyards with a trail in the middle going uphill with a structure at the top to the right of the trail and a tree further to the right are the vineyards just across the village of Briñas. The vineyards are located in a meander of the Ebro river which in this stretch is very winding. This vineyards belong to the winery López de Heredia and it was Don Rafael López de Heredia y Landeta who began construction of an Arab castle atop the hill which he wanted to use as a “Château” in the French viticultural sense of the word. The location of this vineyard of 100 hectares is called “Tondón” and it is a very ancient site which was inhabited already in pre-Roman antiquity. The outbreak of World War I and the death of one of his sons at the age of 17 caused Rafael to abandon his dream of building a château there seven years after starting work in 1907. The winemaking family, owner of more than 50% of the Tondón meander territory, maintains the idea of completing the construction of the castle, although this is a long-term project. The view here used in “The Way” must be an areal view as you can also see another structure in the background in the distance on the left. As I photographed this view from ground level, you do not see that 2nd structure on my photos.
01:15:51 Arrival at CVNE winery in Haro (off-Camino). A bottle of CVNE wine appears in a few scenes throughout the movie. You can recognize the big cursive C of Cune (the V in Roman antiquity was like the U of our modern Latin alphabet, thus the brand name "Cune" on the bottles. CVNE stands for Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España ( Wine Company of Northern Spain).
01:17:20 At table under at patio of CVNE winery with a bit of Haro train station in the background where only 3 trains stop daily.
01:21:04 Big Jump from the CVNE winery in Haro to the Local Police HQs in Logroño which is about 48,9 km away via the fastest road, the toll road AP-68. Now that I review this scene as a local resident of the area, it seems a bit absurd. I a real situation they would have taken drunken Tom just up the hill to the HQs of the Policía Local in the old town of Haro.
01:21:32 Another abrupt change from Local Police HQs in Logroño to Briñas
01:24:22 That’s the road just outside of Briñas along the northern bank of the Ebro river and they’re walking in the wrong direction into Briñas. 01:25:41 The agave plants that appear on the left as they enter Briñas are no longer there. I was first in Briñas in February of 2014 and they were still there. I returned yesterday and only saw 1 agave, the rest have been removed. Too bad, they were quite nice there.
Hi there. I live in La Rioja and go twice a month shopping in Logroño. In fact, I was once there at the "Policía Local" of Logroño and believe me, it's the HQs of the Policía Local in Logroño on the street called Rua Vieja which means "old street".

Hi there Saint Mike, the scene where Tom is arrested is CVNE winery in Haro; the scene where he is released out onto the street where Jack says "you can thank my credit card" is on Rua Vieja in front of the Police Station in Logroño. When Tom gets arrested they're inside the CVNE winery patio, but as he's being dragged away by the 2 Spanish cops to the police station, the scene switches over abruptly to the hallway that connects Rua Vieja to the courtyard of the Police Station in Logroño. As to the interior scenes at the Police Station, I don't know where that was filmed, but I could imagine it was the Logroño "Policía Local" HQs. For some reason the director or his advisors decided to do quite a bit of shooting in La Rioja, mostly Logroño (Rua Vieja Local Police Station), the village of Briñas and the vineyards just across it to the east, Haro (CVNE winery), and the Province of Burgos, foremost the City of Burgos, Tosantos and Hornillos del Castillo all in Burgos Province. Paradoxically, very little shooting was done in Galicia which is of course the last stretch of the Camino. Cheers to you (_)3 !!! :)

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I tried to correct Saint Mike II back in January 2018, (post #21) about Haro/Logroño, but it seems he either didn't read it or took no notice.

Thx Bert, got it. Yes, I felt something had not been understood :) Different people perceive space and locations in different ways. It's normal. I was once driving with my wife and was using normal paper maps for orientation. She asked me, "how do you do that, can you teach me" :-D LOL!!! Whole different subject here my friend. Cheers (_)3 and Buen Camino". Next time you do another Camino you'll have to stop by our place for a little vino or a café con leche.

The Spanish Wikipedia article has information about the specifics of the local economy in Bargota. The article also mentions that Viana, Logroño and Estella are within reasonable distance and provide employment in industrial sectors and in the services sector. Bargota doesn't seem to be doing too badly in general: un pueblo con mucha vida y dinamismo. There's a mobile medical team that holds consultations every day of the week - access to doctors (and schools) are important factors for village life.

(Updated 29 June 2019) The Way: Additional recognized locations some of which might be redundant. I’m not a “caminante” of the Camino but as I live near the camino along the banks of the Upper Ebro River, I thought I might add some notes.
Fantástico, thank you, thank you, thank you @Rodrigo de Navarrenx. I'm not someone who is particularly interested in movie locations as such, and for me, the value of "The Way" movie is mainly that it shows beautiful images of Spain, in particular those that I recognise because I walked there. But I also like puzzles and every since @Bert45 started this thread, I've been keen to identify ALL of these locations. Which is hopeless, of course, without the local knowledge that you have.

Thanks to you, great progress has been made. :)

Now I have to watch the thing again because there is one very short shot of an isolated monastery or similar where I would just love to know the location. I suspect that it is totally out of sequence so it will be hard to identify if one doesn't recognise it straight away because one has seen it in real life before ...

I think the answer to that particular puzzle lies within the question. :)

I think its a shame that the film didn't focus more on mud; grumpy hospitalero/as; the lack of toilet facilities (and yes I do remember the peeing scene); the daily grind of cafe-con-leche, tortilla and over-cooked meat with chips; and above all, that walking in the right direction increases your chances of getting to Santiago...

The backgrounds of the pictures of the church Rick and Peg posted #51 are completely different.

There is no denying the church is the same in both pictures but the near background (hills) and far background (mountains) are similar but so different upon closer inspection. My brain kept suggesting photoshop. I wanted to match up the saddle in the mountain on the wider angle shot (top pic) with the saddle in the mountain on the zoomed in shot (bottom pic) but the horizontal angles that the shots were taken from caused additional cognitive dissonance. It finally made sense when I found a landmark, the key to the puzzle, two rocky nubs (barely visible) in the top photo, top left corner with the steep green hill slopping down from it to the right and matched it up with the two rocky nubs and slopping hill in the bottom photo, top right horizon.

Yes, the landscape in the movie seems to have been digitally concocted using real elements from different locations. Those big mountains do exist and they form part of the Sierra de Codes. The two most visible peaks are the Yoar or Joar on the left depending on whether you're writing Castellano or Basque, and the one to the write is La Plana. You must be able to see those peaks from the village of Bargota, however, there is one problem. Just below Joar mountain, there is a whole bunch of white windmills for harvesting wind energy which destroy the natural beauty of the landscape. So the directors must have shot the two peaks from an angle more to the east where those windmills seem clearly more to the left as you look at them. They then cropped the image to exclude those ugly windmills, and inserted those lovely foothills immediately behind the church, and then inserted the church of Bargota digitally. So the location does exist in reality, but not the way it is portrayed in the movie. I will go there on the weekend and take photos.

No question in my mind. See the shot at YouTube at 1:48:05 (YouTube id: OA6aq85WhXU?t=6485)

The camera would have been very close to 42.4550776,-6.1554567.

Looks like they were walking the wrong way again, east of the town and heading south-east just south of LE-6304 which is just south of the camino. See red pin placed ontop of Google's satellite view at: https://www.google.com/maps/place/4...5!3m4!1s0x0:0x0!8m2!3d42.4550776!4d-6.1554567

Here is the Google street view that shows the wall, tree, traffic signs and church:

Back to Bargota. Google identifies the church as St. Mary's and gives its location as 42.5842735,-2.354966

See https://www.google.com/maps/place/S...5c5a3949fcb40595!8m2!3d42.5614376!4d-2.311914

I'm guessing that the rocky nubs are called "Las Parcelas" (the parcels). That feature is ENE of the church in the vicinity of 42.568601,-2.297087. A topographical map view can be seen by entering those coordinates at https://www.gpsvisualizer.com/draw/ and selecting the "es: Topo (IGN)" view at the top right and then zooming in and out until you see the name appear.

I doubt that the image was photoshopped. It was a low budget film and there are too many beautiful views in Spain to bother spending time and money creating one for a few seconds of film having nothing to do with the plot.

I'll be there on the weekend and will be able to confirm if this was a photoshopped scene or not. Like I said, the different elements do exist, but not necessarily in this context. I will take photos.

Your wish is my command, Rick. But I'm not very computerate. I don't know about "links" -- I mean, I know what they are and if I copy and paste a URL it appears as a link, but I don't think that's what you mean. I will put "See post #57" and delete my question mark.

but it is a fictional movie, not and instructional documentary...
Have walked different routes, multiple times and never once did I find it a grind in any way (or that muddy). The only grinds I have ever experienced were in a coffee pot or at a workplace, lol.
All in all an entertaining film, and while I realize there are some that have grown tired of hearing about it, I think it is kind of cool that it is still discussed.

I confess: I'm a The Way junkie. And enjoying all this arcane stuff! :)
Haha...
And I confess: I'm a The Way eye-roller.
The amount of effort it's taken to figure out where things were filmed highlights just how fake it is.
I prefer the real thing so why people are so moved by this movie puzzles me. But it is as it is...clearly I'm vastly in the minority. So I'm happy you're all having fun. ☺

Peg does crossword puzzles and the words she writes down sure isn't literature. I do internet searches. It's challenging fun and you can learn lots of interesting things along the way.

Say, V. Why are you on this thread anyway? ;):):D

It's just fun, and a keen interest in landscapes. I've never done the "Camino" and don't really intend to walk a trail with thousands of "caminantes". I prefer hiking trails where I'm by myself. I prefer the road least traveled :) ! I live here and when I'm in a town on the Camino, I sometimes engage in conversation with the "peregrinos". I've helped a few who lost their way, had vino with a few. I always smile when I see them.

But they are walking in the right direction. Rather than walking into the village and through it as any sensible caminantes would do, they have turned left at the junction by that tree and stuck to the LE-6304. They are heading south-west.

Behind their backs are the tree, traffic signs and church. They have to be going east for that to be. Also, it does not look like they are walking on pavement.

It's very dark at Santa Catalina de Somoza, but I still think they are walking on the LE-6304, on pavement, in the right direction. But let's not fall out over it. It's at 1:48:05 and lasts all of 3 seconds, if anyone else wants to chip in.

The other day a noticed a little quick. The YouTube version of the film has two scenes of the group walking in front of the signs at Manjarin. The first shows the signs closeup and then it pans out to take in a wider view. My DVD copy of the film just shows the closeup.

I enjoy the challenge of finding answers. I'm not attached to this movie and I wouldn't go out of my way to visit any of these locations because Martin Sheen and his son made a movie there. I still consider myself lucky that I walked most of the way to Santiago without even knowing that there was a movie called The Way. Or in fact any of the 'docu-pilgrimage' movies.

I enjoyed learning a bit about Briñas and Haro and similar places that are not on the Camino Frances or not even on any established Camino.
Honestly? Just giving in to curiosity about what people are talking about here, when the topic just makes me want to do something different.;)
There's another thread that has this effect on me a lot of the time. 😂

Not at the moment but I suspect that it was shot much further along the camino from Santa Catalina and the previous scenes. That grass in the churchyard has that Galician green. Also, if the filming of getting the compestela really happened on November 5 the church may be a few days away. I say this because there were a lot of fresh flowers left in the graveyard making me think it may have been shot the day after All Saints Day.

And I noticed today another oddity: during the opening credits, you see a few stamps. One stamp is from the Hotel des Gorges in Monistrol d'Allier which is quite close to Le Puy ...
Well spotted! How about the castle at 06:55? Anybody recognise it?

I suspect it was not on the Camino Francés at all. Once you know that they filmed off the CF -- e.g. Briñas, Haro, Bargota -- the whole of northern Spain becomes possible. I'm sure they would not have gone far from the CF, though. The style of the chapel and the graves puts it in Galicia. It is very similar to the cemetery at Ferreiros. I have tried to look at every cemetery from Sarria to Santiago on Streetview, but not found it.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Not a bad idea, Rick, but area the family came from is a long way from Santiago (about 100 km). There are 7 cemeteries in the area. The ones I've been able to see online don't match the one in the film, but I cannot rule the others out.

The credits give thanks to several towns in Galicia (at 2:07:46). One of these may have the church. There is Muxia, of course, but that might be better saved for last as it is probably being thanked for the seaside filming. The others are Ames, Dumbria and Mazaricos.

Also, I just noticed in the Youtube version of the film that Daniel stands next to Tom at Muxcia and they speak. That is missing on my DVD (just as well).

I just got back from another camino (Triacastela to Santiago). Sorry to tell Rick, the church is not in Ames, Dumbria or Mazaricos (using Streetview).

Hi Bert, glad you made it back alive :) !!! The church you're still trying to locate is most likely in the realms of the mystically devine :-D LOL !!! Cheers to you. Be patient, I'm sure someone will find it, maybe it will be me when I drive through that region one day, per accident. But it can't be a church, it's rather a little chapel in a cemetary somewhere as you can yourself see from the gravestones.

You can find details of the herculean search here: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/com...pilgrim-shelter-in-the-way.67387/#post-845895.
The Rest area (área de descanso) where Joost hugs Tom 1:33 has also been found: Fuente de Praotorre, between Rabé de las Calzadas and Hornillos (Thanks to Laurie) (out of sequence, unless we consider the previous scenes, from entering Hornillos to the dormitory to be out of sequence)
Likewise the Church where Joost rings the bell 1:44 has been identified: There seem to be two versions of my original post, one with the ermita identified and this one where it isn't. I think I must have re-posted the original list of locations so that I could edit it.
The two URLs are different. Here is the newer version: https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/locations-used-in-the-way.67359/#post-855449
I hope you enjoyed your search, even if it turned out to be unnecessary.
