The article says that he had lunch at Hotel Cantábrico restaurant. He has been also in Asturias. The locals couldn't believe it.
He is not doing the Primitivo and didn´t try the famous pulpo (salad and lamb chops).

Poor guy. He sleeps in Parador, he eats in top notch restaurants but he can't just lean against the pillars of Pazo de Raxoi and enjoy warm beer from a can bought for 0,47€ in Froiz and watch the pilgrims coming to the Praza...

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
"[He] didn´t try the famous pulpo (salad and lamb chops)." -- Is that a joke, or do you mean he had salad and lamb chops rather than pulpo?

Yes, he had salad and lamb chops (and Fonsagrada cake) rather tan pulpo.
He was not brave enough to try the Fonsagrada famous pulpo. Many people from the villages around of Asturias and Galicia go there just to eat it.

Maybe you can find little forgiveness seeing you are on a pilgrimage.
It's a relief to be able forgive when someone recognizes the wrong that they did and asks for forgiveness.
But when an influential person makes lame excuses for past offenses and continues to peddle hateful tropes, it's appropriate to prick the bubble of star-struck celebrity news.

Do you think anyone is truly star struck with Mel Gibson??

I'm a bit amused that people share the fact that they are not interested in Mel Gibson at all yet they open this thread, read messages and comment 🙃. In Europe and in Galicia he's probably best known for the movie Braveheart. Of course local people are interested and maybe even thrilled when a widely known person visits and enjoys their region and their food. Let them.

That A Fonsagrada cake looks enticing. I had never heard of it. Pleased to know about it now ...

You must be joking. What do you think my grandfather would say to you after he was orphaned at 11 years old because his family was murdered in a Pogrom? This is a man who for years has spewed hate. He was raised by a father who said this in a New York Times interview:
In his interview for the New York Times Magazine article, Gibson dismissed historical accounts that six million Jews were exterminated:
"Go and ask an undertaker or the guy who operates the crematorium what it takes to get rid of a dead body," he said. "It takes one liter of petrol and 20 minutes. Now, six million?" Across the table, Joye [Gibson's wife] suddenly looked up from her plate. ... She had kept quiet most of the day, so it was a surprise when she cheerfully piped in. "There weren't even that many Jews in all of Europe," she said.

"Anyway, there were more after the war than before," Hutton added. The entire catastrophe was manufactured, said Hutton, as part of an arrangement between Hitler and "financiers" to move Jews out of Germany. Hitler "had this deal where he was supposed to make it rough on them so they would all get out and migrate to Israel because they needed people there to fight the Arabs," he said.

Like father like son:

"I mean when the war was over they said it was 12 million. Then it was six. Now it’s four. I mean it’s that kind of numbers game."
"Why are they calling her a Nazi? …Because modern secular Judaism wants to blame the holocaust on the Catholic Church. And it's a lie. And it's revisionism. And they've been working on that one for a while."

And of course his most famous quote:

" "F@$ing Jews... the Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world. Are you a Jew?"

I guess I am not much of a Pilgrim in your eyes. That is fine with me, no problem. Forgive? What does it matter? Does it burn in my heart? Not in the least. He is too insignificant to bother. and Forget? NEVER AGAIN.

I am sorry having started this thread. It was because A Fonsagrada is an important point on the Primitivo and didn't know, like most Spaniards , anything about Mel Gibson's ideas.
He's a controversial figure but we don't hear or read that much about him in our media. The incident in 2006 when he was arrested for drunk driving and his vile rant was widely published was the first time ever that I had heard about it.

The news articles in the Spanish media are mainly about which towns and sites he visited, in which hotels he stayed, in which restaurants he ate and what he ate there. Here's a comprehensive list, entitled Visits to churches, a lot of lamb and a tribute to Don Pelayo. For future boycotting or for future inspiration ...

Controversial? No controversy about him at all unless one believes his anti-Semitic rants.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

It's one thing to not care about this luvvie celebrity news and another to let it pass without pointing out the "controversies" surrounding Mel Gibson. The "ideas" about Jewish people are the big deal here. But let's also spare a moment to remember the way he treated his former partner. She recorded some of the threats that he made toward her on the telephone. You can find them online if you want.

Spot on. He’s a real peach.

I was aware of them. I guess I felt a bit sorry for those who posted newspaper articles from Galicia in good faith. I'm boycotting movies by Polanski, by Allen, sadly enough probably also by Spacey in future and I was never going to watch The Passion of the Christ anyway. Is that enough credentials?

I've always enjoyed his movies and he's directed some really good ones. I especially like the Year of Living Dangerously. I'm still a fan.
I could care less about his political or religious opinions. Also I don't allow the media and entertainment industry force me to like or dislike somebody. They have zero control over my life.

The media, in particular the media in the country where one lives or the media who publish in the language that one uses, inform us and inevitably shape our opinion. It is not a one way process. The media both shape and reflect public opinion and public interest in many subtle ways.

I had a look at what the articles in Spanish newspapers say: Here’s Mel Gibson, a guy who we know from the movies, who has a friend from Burgos who travelled with him through Northern Spain, he visited the famous places that you know and like, too, and he had excellent regional food that you know and enjoy, too. He visited Covadonga and may make a movie about Don Pelayo. Here are some details about places and food.

US media, if they had thought that this trip was even remotely interesting to their readers or viewers but who obviously didn’t think so because they didn’t report it would have written something like this: here’s the guy you know of course and who said this horrible stuff of which you are no doubt aware, in particular once in 2006 to a cop in an LA police car, but we will repeat it nevertheless once more and who recently went on a short vacation in Northern Spain which is in Europe. Here are some photos.

New Original Camino Gear Designed Especially with The Modern Peregrino In Mind!
Except that the Spanish language press is so ill informed as to even report what this thug is doing. They would never have reported this if he wasn’t a celebrity. All this proves is that the Spanish papers that reported his doings are mindless groupies and/or star struck, which is equally inane. But the press is all about selling papers, so nothing new either in Spain or the United States.

Apropos - This is one case where the US press would have been fully right to report this the way you say they might have. But even better, not to have reported it at all.

Is this thread camino related in any way?

I mean, one of my relatives went to Salamanca once. He was with this guy called Wellington. Not sure what he ate, where he ate or what churches he visited. I think he met some Frenchmen at some point, not sure. His visit did get in the papers though I suppose....

I'm not familiar enough with the mainly regional newspapers of Galicia and Asturias etc or the national press to make a judgement. As I like to know what I'm talking about I had a look at all these quotes. Really foul language and despicable but apparently made in private and then pulled into the glaring light of publicity. Of course, one must be as spotless in private life as in in public life.

The biggest public controversy about Mel Gibson concerned of course the movie The Passion of The Christ that he directed in 2004. Wikipedia describes it as a film that has been controversial and received largely polarised reviews, with some critics calling the film a religious classic while others found the extreme violence distracting and excessive, and claimed that the film subliminally promoted antisemitism. [...] The film is currently the highest-grossing Christian film of all time.

Most troubling of all - certainly and hopefully not “Christian” in the truest sense.

What about that dross The Patriot...typical American based garbage. .much like Braveheart..I don't see any one complaining about those fictions. It's not history it's american fantasy. However apocalyto i thought was excellent.

He didn't perchance run into my great-great-great grandfather just outside Brussels a few short years later , did he?
Ach!

No, you must wear a hairshirt on your next camino...

You need to stop letting movies affect you so much. They're just for entertainment.

Yes but some purport to be factual. I enjoyed "Ray" starring Jamie Foxx but was amazed when they made up the story that he was banned from playing in Georgia and there was even a final scene where it was subsequently lifted. Pure fantasy, never happened. Why?
The Great Escape..no Americans were involved but were added to pander to American audiences.Bridge on the River Kwaii..American was added to make it more palatable to Americane audiences. Yes it does matter because cinema is a way the many people get their "facts"

Yeah....so what? Steve McQueen and William Holden were pretty cool dudes in those movies. You have to admit that scene where Steve is trying to get away on the motorcycle was good.

He is influential ;)? I know now more about Mel Gibson than I ever dreamed of knowing about an actor and movie director. I watched a 2004 interview with Diane Swayer, so that was in the context of the Passion movie and before the rant in the police car and the relationship with Grigorieva. I was impressed how steadfastly Gibson refused to say anything at all about his father who was 85 at the time and who will be 101 years old in a couple of weeks. He is my father, I love him, what people are doing is trying to drive a wedge between father and son. I wouldn't be surprised if Mel Gibson is simply tired of accusations against him personally that will never go away.

I also now know what a sedevacantist is. This is why I can't tear myself away from the forum. It's not always because of what is written on the forum but what I discover when I'm looking for background information and trying to suss out to what extent the stuff I read here is accurate.

And I, because of the amazing leaps conversations can take. Mel Gibson to sedevacantists: who would have thought that was possible? Thanks @Kathar1na . As a result of reading this, I've learned something today - even though my opinion about M.G. and his movies (basically, I couldn't care less) has become even more deeply entrenched.

Having just popped onto this thread I am once again reminded that we mods should make a point of looking at threads in which we have absolutely no interest and cannot imagine the twists and turns a thread will take. I’m kind of surprised no one reported it, which is the surest way to get some moderator eyes on it, but it seems to me that it has been spiraling downward for a while now (with occasional bursts of fresh air to do things like educate us on terms like sedavacantist). So closing it seems like the best way to go.
