Portuguese Credential Has ARRIVED!!!

After many years of waiting, the Via Lusitana has issued its own credential. It can be used by anyone on any Camino, but I know it will be welcomed by many peregrinos who are walking the Portugues. The credential has been approved by the Cathedral. Some have pictures of the Santiago cathedral (as this one), some have pictures of the Porto Cathedral, and still others of the Lisbon cathedral. Great news! It will take a while for them to make their way to the Cathedral of Lisbon, but they are coming soon.

So is it for sure when we arrive in Porto that we can find this new credential for our journey?

No , from a Portuguese caminho friend ( who is well informed) I heard the Vialusitana has a stock of the "old" Spanish type"credential. When they will be sold out ,they will issue the Portuguese type credential

Hi, sopranocorry,

I am guessing that by “standard one” you mean the one issued by the Santiago cathedral. There are many camino organizations around the world that issue their own credential, usually bought by people from that country who are going to walk. I get mine every year from the US group APOC. A few years back there was a big kerfuffle about “unofficial credentials” being issued by tour operators (who were making a lot of $$$ from the sales). The cathedral put a stop to that by saying it would only issue compostelas to people who arrived with approved credentials. Many of the national camino organizations got approval for their credentials. The Portugal amigos association designed their own credential and got the approval of the cathedral. Since several caminos goes through Portugal, a lot of peregrinos have been asking about a Portuguese credential, and it has finally arrived. It will serve exactly the same purpose as any other official credential, but I think it’s very pretty and can understand how people walking the Portugues might want to use it.

And here’s a link to a thread with pictures of the different ones out there. Collect them all!!!

These different credentials are so cool! Thank you Ivar for providing this thread with the different pictures. We will be getting ours from the Porto cathedral, but will check about this new Portuguese one for availability. Once we complete CP from Porto and get to Santiago we are also planning in this trip to go to Finisterre. Would we then get a’new’ credential for this from Santiago de Compostela cathedral? Is there a requirement again for multiple stamps each day and another compostela either in Finisterre or back in Santiago? Thank you so much for your response. Sorry we are just new to this, and our departure from Porto on 20 March will be our very first camino.

You can use the same one.

Is there any way we can apply for the Portuguese credential by post? We hope to start walking from Porto in May. For other routes I've walked I had different credentials. It would be great if we could have the special Portuguese credentials.

I read that credentials in Porto are now issued by an office opposite the cathedral. Is this correct? What are the opening hours and how late does the office stay open?

The office opposite the entrance of the cathedral is the tourist office

I would have been happy to buy them and send them to you but I only have a handful of days in Lisbon in the next two months and a lot of tasks to get through.

If you had time that would be amazing but I appreciate you're busy.
Could you perhaps PM me with details if this is possible. Thanks in advance.

Hello Everyone. To those who asked if this new-ish credencial is available to purchase, it IS AVAILABLE. In fact there are FOUR different versions of the same, variations of the theme. Same covers with slight different colors and the rear (choose your photo): Cathedral of Porto, Cathedral of Santiago, Cathedral of Coimbra, and Cathedral of Lisbon. The rear has a Black and White photo of whichever cathedral you choose. I will provide the link here. I ordered two online and paid via PayPal. So easy peasy.

I have also made a little hobby of collecting credenciales from various places. Thus far I have received: CSJ London, American Pilgrims, Croatian, French, and these new Portugese ones.

Do you know if the Porto-credential is available at the Porto Cathedral?

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Last I heard, the Porto Cathedral was not selling the Via Lusitana credentials. They were only selling the Spanish Cathedral credentials. But that may have changed.
That's what I read as well. Guess the only way to get one will be to buy it online then.

I've Googled it and haven't come up with a site to order it. Can you provide the link?
Lusitana Pilgrim Association or the Jacobeus Space Association, which send it by mail.

I was a couple of weeks ago in Lisbon (tourist) and I bought one at the Cathedral for 2€ with the Lisbon Cathedral on it.
I hope I can use it from there in the future 🤞

@akula415
Do they all have a different stamp inside?

I got the parcel today. Only 5 days to the usa. Ordered from the albergue links I provided in my earlier post. I included the return address on the envelope. Note the shipping cost was only 2.20 euros. Not bad. Se e photo attached.

Do you mean that pre print red colored stamp seal? They are the same on the inside regardless of which model I bought. The Porto or Lisbon cathedral designs both have the same inside.

I actually do not know. I have heard yes and I have also heard no. I watched someone's YouTube video recently of them purchasing a new credential at porto cathedral and I saw them choose. Sorry I dont recall the name of the video and it was a quick scene. I would suggest just ordering it online from the links I provided.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Just received my Porto-credential 🙂. Ten days within Europe.
Funny how you can get a wrong idea from seeing photos, it's much smaller than I'd imagined 😄.

I ordered 6 and received them this week also. They arrived in two weeks to the west coast of the US. I like the size. Since they have started printing the credential issued by the Cathedral that I ordered from Ivar on heavier paper they don't easily fit into the plastic holders that I also buy from Ivar.

This one also doesn't fit well in the plastic holder I bought with it. If I had known the right size I wouln't even have ordered the holder with it: it's the standard size to fit car registration papers in my country, but it's a bit to wide and not long enough for the credential, it sticks out a few mm's.

Ack! You're right. It's about one cm too long to fit. 😢

I still love the design though.

Yeah guys I know exactly what you mean I too purchased the plastic holder and it is about a centimeter too short. Just wondering out of curiosity is anyone here going on the Camino Portuguese this Winter? Hopefully I will depart after Christmas time To the 11th of January. The last 100 km.

Alas, they do not mail them to Australia

There are also some out of stock 🙁
Only Lisbon and Coimbra are for sale.
And for the record, no shipping to Belgium neither 😱

That surprises me. I had no problem getting them shipped to the US in 2019.

Both Australia and Belgium are currently on the drop down list of countries on the shipping page. Of course I didn't go so far as trying to place and order to be shipped to either country.

And along came covid and everything came to a halt. Maybe next year for me to do another camino, God permits.

Were you able to find a Portuguese credential in Coimbra? Where? I bought two credentials at the Santa Clara convent, but they were the Spanish Año Santo ones. If I can't find a Portuguese credential here in Coimbra, I will try to get one or two of them at Lisbon cathedral after finishing the Madrid camino.

I was referring to the message #23 from akula415.
The link for the online shop of those credentials. The site have some, but apparently they don't send them to some or all countries (?) listed when you wanted to make an order 🤔

OK thanks. For anyone searching for a fresh credential in Coimbra, the only two places that sell them, as far as I'm aware, are the gift shop at the Santa Clara convent and the Santa Cruz cafe (the cafe next to the Santa Cruz church). Both places had the Spanish "Sal de tu Tierra" edition. I will spend a few days in Lisbon before heading home, so I will check out the cathedral in Lisbon.

The old cathedral in Coimbra has the Lusitina Portuguese credentials for sale. I had given up hope on finding them in Coimbra after checking at Santa Clara and Santa Cruz convents, but when I walked in to visit the old cathedral, there was one on display at the ticket office. I got three of them, and will use two for the Camino de Madrid in a few days. I tend to get more stamps than required, sometimes 2-3 daily.

Hello, my friend of 50+ years and I are on our first Camino walk. We are looking for: 1) safe, comfortable hostels in Lisbon; 2) stages from Lisbon to Porto (via Tomar) in about 16 days...
Hi I have searched everywhere to see if there is a luggage service from Lisbon to Porto. I know there is from Porto to Santiago, but Lisbon ???. Thanks for any info.
