Accommodation re Nightbus arriving Astorga 04:15

Hi all,

Just wondering whether anyone had arrived in Astorga at 04:15 on the nightbus from Madrid?
I will be arriving early Saturday morning and I want to start walking the day afterwards, so will definitely be booking a hotel or staying in an albergue for Saturday night. If anyone has been on this bus, did you book a hotel with a 24hr front desk just to have a place to crash for the morning, or did you hang around town until early afternoon check-in that day? It will be May, so not too cold to wander around and watch the sunrise from a bench somewhere waiting for a bar to open, I guess. Or if anyone has another suggestion of what to do?

Any advice would be very welcome!

May can still be rather cold in the morning. So I guess staying inside would be more comfortable.
I can't find if the station has a cafeteria. There is a restaurant, la Pausa, but of course not open that early.

I see on google maps that there are some bars and cafeterias in the area that open at 6 am.

Bookingdotcom lists some 24 hours open hotels so I guess you would be welcome to stay at the reception. Maybe they are even so gracious to give you the room.

I’m with you Sabine - Hotel Astur Plaza is great. The price is reasonable, the rooms are spotlessly clean, the staff are friendly and helpful and they have an excellent buffet breakfast for an additional (reasonable) charge. On the three occasions I’ve stayed there my room has been quiet and - bliss! - there was a bath as well as the shower.

Hi Jenski,
I haven't done the nightbus to Astorga but we did fly to Dublin very early one morning (5am) and wanted a hotel room to crash in before getting our next flight. When we arranged things with the hotel, the hotel told us to book a room for the date before and pay for it to reserve it for sure (and not lose it as a "no show") and everything was set when we arrived around 5:30am. We slept for four hours, then took advantage of breakfast and had to check out at the normal check-out time. Apparently, with this hotel, checking in at 5:30am counted as an occupancy for the night before, not for the day of arrival, if that makes sense. In other words, let's say we arrived on June 8th at 5:30am. The hotel actually counted us as a booking for the night of June 7th. I'm not sure if all hotels are like this, but thought it worth mentioning.

By the way, Astorga is beautiful and if you have time to stick around for a day before starting to walk, I'd highly recommend it.

There is a nice bar in the plaza that opens early that you could hang out in. I suppose it’s below or next to La Peseta. There’s another in Hostal Gaudi, across from the Bishop’s palace.

There is nothing at the bus station except a waiting room.

At Astorga the bus station is more than adequate for buses that pull in for a few moments and swap passengers and baggage.

During the day, if the weather is kind, walk along the ramparts (medieval defence system) for the view over the valley and the hills beyond.

On the other side of the city (beside the Cathedral) is the never lived in bishops residence, diocesan offices and chapel: a riot of form and colour from architect Anton Gaudi of Barcelona. I was surprised by the simplicity (for me) shown by the roof plans.
