Time of past OR future Camino
Planning to start April 12th
Hi. I am planning a walk starting on April 12th. I would like to park and leave my car in Santiago and then travel to St Jean to start. What is the best/quickest/easiest way to get there?

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Hi,

It seems there are different options by bus, by train or bus/train. They take quite a while though, 11-16 hours. The fastest seems to be a combination of plane and train/bus, but more expensive. Take a look at:

Buen Camino 🙂

Try rome2rio.com to research this.

The possible variations on flights/trains/buses is remarkable, The easiest of course would be to drive 😁

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Either:
Train to Pamplona (9 hours) + bus to SJPP (1h45)
Or:
Plane to Bilbao (1 hour direct with Iberia) + bus to Pamplona (2 hours) + bus to SJPP (1h45)
[Or, to complicate things further, you could go Bilbao-Bayonne-SJPP].

FYI: bus departure times might not always coincide very conveniently with your arrival times, so it's possible you'll need to spend a night at the end of one of the 'legs' (you'll just have to play around with times/travel combinations by checking Renfe for train times, Iberia for flight times, Alsa for Pamplona-SJPP bus times, and Autobuses la Union for Bilbao-Pamplona bus times!)

Easiest option is Renfe train from Santiago to Irun/Hendaye. SNCF train from Hendaye to Bayonne and SNCF train from Bayonne to SJPdP.

Transfer from Irun to Hendaye via Metro Donostealdea if the Renfe train terminates at Irun.

You could try shortening the travel time by flying Santiago to Bilbao. Then PESA bus from Airport Bilbao to San Sebastian (with some buses connecting to Bayonne) then Renfe train San Sebastian to Irun, Metro Irun to Hendaye ... etc.

Ianred, this may be a silly question, but why not use public transport to SJPP from your home? Then you could just go home directly from Santiago instead of a rather long drive and a longish train or bus journey. I'm guessing you are already in mainland Europe anyway? But if that's the way you want to do it, then the previous post by Donjek looks the best bet. Or just leave the car at at Saint J?

Fastest (which to me is the best :) )
  • 1.5 hour flight from Santiago de Compostela to Pamplona, around 55 Euro.
  • 1 hour taxi from Pamplona airport to SJPdP. Cost is about 60 104 Euro, but when reserving the taxi you can ask to share it, which would reduce the cost.
So, without sharing the cost of the taxi, you can reach SJPdP from SdC in less than three hours at a cost of about 115 160 Euro. Less if you share the taxi ride. :)

Where are you finding non-stop flights between Santiago and Pamplona in April? The shortest that I have found include a stop in Madrid

You are right. I was going by a past flight I took. Right now, the total travel time is about 3.75 hours from SdC to Pamplona. I edited my OP to reflect the correct information. Thank you. :)
