Donativos on the Norte/Primitivo

When I was preparing updates for the guidebooks yesterday, it struck me that there is currently an abundance of donation-based albergues on the Norte (and, to a lesser extent, on the Primitivo). I've tried to compile a complete list--check it out:

Camino del Norte:

• Irun – Albergue de Peregrinos Jakobi (breakfast)
• Pasajes de San Juan – Albergue de Peregrinos Santa Ana
• Zarautz – Albergue de Peregrinos
• Zumaia - Albergue de Peregrinos Convento de San Jose
• Markina-Xemein – Albergue de Peregrinos Convento
• Monasterio de Zenarruza (communal dinner)
• Larrabetzu – Albergue de Peregrinos
• Lezama - Albergue de Peregrinos
• Bilbao – Albergue de Peregrinos (communal meals)
• Bilbao - Albergue Parroquia Barrio de la Cruz / Santa Cruz de Begoña
• Barakaldo – Albergue del Polideportivo
• Portugalete – Albergue de Peregrinos

• Grado – Albergue Villa de Grado (breakfast)
• San Marcelo (7km after Grado) - Casita Mandala (communal meals)
• Porciles – Albergue Fontenonaya (communal meals)
• Bodenaya – Albergue de Peregrinos (communal meals)
• La Espina – Albergue El Cruce

Check out all those communal meals between Güemes and Luarca! I know people complain about the asphalt in Cantabria, and understandably, but you can't beat that hospitality.

And for anyone looking to launch a new donativo-based albergue, the second half of the Primitivo seems like it could use you!

Updated to include a new donativo with communal meals in San Marcelo, 7km after Grado on the Primitivo -- Casita Mandala.

Albergue in Bustio (few km before Colombres, just after the bridge where you enter Cantabria from Unquerra) is also donativo. it is run by two very nice ladies - mother and daughter. Double rooms with bathrooms, wooden furniture and embroidered bed linen. Breakfast. You can also give your clothes to the ladies in the evening and you'll get them washed.

I just had to smile a little at my very hopeful comment on 06/01/2020. I am so thankful that we can now stand on the other side of this amazingly weird period. And I will be trying again on the 1st of April this year. Does anyone know if this list has been kept up to date somewhere?

Dang, this one makes me really sad. Albergue La Ferreria in Amandi has permanently closed. The owner of the house decided to not renew the lease.

Sergio has lined up a new place, so he aims to open a new albergue in 2024, so that's the very large silver lining. I'll miss that space, though.
