This has most likely been covered already but I cant find it. I see from Sara's vlog that she walked to Tres Cantos then caught the train back to Madrid because all other accommodation is too expensive. Johnnie Walker says that there is an albergue there but you have to be out by 6 am. There is no albergue at Colmenar Viajo.

What has everyone else been doing ? What are the alternative suggestions?

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

€60,-
Accourding to Gronze.com and The Camino de Madrid Handbook, the Albergue in Tres Cantos is closed. Some people on this forum have mentioned staying at the Holiday Inn Express or Hotel VP Jardin in Tres Cantos. Gronze.com has links to Booking.com to check the prices.

Have checked dates throughout the year and nothing available at the albergue - Hostal Tres Cantos.
It appears to have died.
So, train or whatever back to Madrid appears so far to be the option.
Perhaps the same but onward towards the end of the next stage is an option also?
Regards
Gerard

It depends a little on what is too expensive. When I stayed, I had spent the previous night sleeping on the floor of Stansted airport (saving the price of a bed!!) and had walked to Tres Cantos from central Madrid immediately after arrival earlier in the morning, so was happy enough to spend ÂŁ32 in those circumstances and stay at Hostal Tres Cantos. I am happy to average out the cost of accommodation over several days.
@gerardcarey I agree it is hard to book, but I think it maybe IS still in business. I can book for this month and February on Booking.com. After that no bookings available, but it may be that they have just not released them yet.
It is not luxurious! But I found this entirely new city intriguing, 'Dead' during the day but springs into life at night with very very many restaurants.
May be worth contacting...

No albergue in Tres Cantos.

I overnighted in a decent commercial hotel, but it was expensive and there’s nothing to see in TC.

If I were to repeat, I’d shuttle back to Madrid. Cheaper, more interesting and less rucksack.

I have booked a room at a hotel, cheaper than another night in Madrid.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

€46,-

I remember someone saying that he or she had stayed in an airbnb. There is one “room in an apartment” that is very highly rated and is not too expensive. There may be more, but I just took a quick look.

And I agree with @timr that Tres Cantos is very interesting, though a bit spooky. Totally planned, nothing organic, just a city that was ordered to be built. I don’t know if you have walked the Vdlp, but it’s a lot like Valdesalor, a city that Franco ordered as a place to bring in people from the countryside. Riaño on the Vadiniense is another fake town, created when they flooded the old one to build a reservoir. Over time, these places do acquire their own personalities, but I find it fascinating to see how very different it feels being in a city that sprang into existence on its own. So, as a sociological experiment, you may enjoy Tres Cantos!

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Gives great current info on accommodation alternatives heading out of Madrid. (Re Tres Cantos closures). Scroll to the top of the thread when you open it.

Also: I booked Hotel VP Jardin in March 2018
Really nice. We ate there too (Same place as mentioned above by (Jill.) Jsalt. I had a room on my own and very luxurious but don’t recall the price.
We also stayed with Ray y Rosa in Manzanares..
they are a wealth of information gained from camino experience. They have their own website too.

Good luck with plans and
Buen camino

Where and how much?
VP Jardin de Tres Cantos, 67 euro with breakfast, 08.05. I am too old for an albergue in Madrid, out on the camino OK, but in a big city, 50 years too late!

I also stayed in the VP Jardín, booking via Booking.com, €99 B&B, November 2019.

Just checked current pricing and it’s €50. I suspect the price varies considerably based on whether there’s a conference or business event in town. It’s that kind of commercial town.

Yes, sadly the albergue is closed as we discovered on arrival back near the end of September. We stayed at Hostal Tres Cantos for 50 euros for a double room including breakfast. More than we would normally choose to spend for a night's accommodation while on Camino but it was available with short notice.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Just ran a simple scan on Airbnb. It is somewhat promising for Tres Cantos. Matrimonial rooms, shared in a house with others is one option so far. Same type available in the next town, Colmenar Viejo
Ensure you check the town address, the no of people you require accom for, the type and no of beds available, the distance from the centre.
Whatever, thanks to peregrina2000 once again.

Gerard

VP Jardin for me also. I was late booking and had to take an expensive but luxurious room.
Hostal Chizon in Colmenar was great for me when I took ill.
