"A "thousand per hour" for the Cathedral to be ready before December 31
Confidence that the works will finish before the start of the Holy Year // This month the restoration of the Main Chapel will begin

Operators and technicians try to optimize the time and resources to the maximum so that the works of the Cathedral are finished before the opening of the Holy Door, on December 31. Work is progressing as planned and deadlines are being met, as official sources of the Basilica say. Less than twelve months after the beginning of the Holy Year, the restoration project focuses on different areas of the great religious complex, both indoors and outdoors. The truth is that almost the entire structure, with the exception of the Obradoiro facade, already rehabilitated, is full of scaffolding and the machinery does not stop working.

On the one hand, the interiors are being recovered, where the works are already well advanced. The main nave is almost finished and you can see the result of the intervention at several points, especially in the vaults, where you can see the new white paint and also the delicate cleaning to which the granite elements were subjected. Likewise, the same sources point out, the south nave, which communicates with Platerias Square, is also almost finished, while technicians are now focusing on the north wing, that of the Immaculate Square; on the cruise, where the three arms of the Basilica converge; and also in the ambulatory, which surrounds the Main Chapel and where the Apostle's grave is located.

The restoration is being integral, that is, it includes, in addition to the three naves of the Basilica, some of the side chapels, such as the Cristo de Burgos. The work focuses on eliminating moisture from the vaults and the recovery of the vertical walls, where the mortars that were used in some of the actions of the twentieth century are removed, and to be covered; as well as sculptures or stained glass.

At the same time that these tasks are carried out, the restoration of the stone roofs is also being executed. In this sense, it should be remembered that one of the objectives of the Master Plan of the Cathedral is to end leaks and damp. Hence, it is essential to insulate the structure well before recovering the interiors.

The famous granite tile roofs are being rehabilitated while also replacing the tile roofs of the gyrola oratories. Precisely, a few days ago the intervention was completed in the Pilar Chapel, where on Wednesday the scaffolding began to be removed.

Work is also being done on the exterior façade of the cloister, which overlooks Platerias Square and the Fonseca Rua; as well as on the terrace, where a metal structure is also installed, and in the Treasure Tower. Cleaning and restoration work is being carried out on the surface. In addition, a new wooden structure is being executed and the roof covering is being renovated; as well as restoring the woodwork. Special elements such as Renaissance cresting, shields and medallions and Renaissance bars will also be arranged. They explain that in regard to the northern panda of the cloister, the works involve the lifting of the roof and the terrace that covers the whole for its renovation, making a wooden structure, a tile finish and a flat terrace with a finish of granite slabs

IMMINENT. From the Cathedral they indicate that the beginning of the restoration of the paintings of the Main Chapel is imminent. In this area, the tender for the recovery of the canopy, the reería, the silver altarpiece and the dressing room, where the seated Apostle who embrace thousands of people every year, is still pending. Everything indicates that the works in the paintings will begin "this same month", while with respect to the bidding and beginning of the set of gold and silver, it is expected that it will go out to the contest and work will begin in the first quarter of the year.

In the first three months of 2020, it is also estimated that the execution of the project of the facade of A Quintana and access to the Holy Door will be awarded and initiated. On the other hand, the start of the action on the steps of the Obradoiro facade is imminent, where the reería and the crypt will also be restored, a project financed by the Ministry of Development.
All interventions must be completed before the end of this year. That is the commitment of the Cathedral Foundation and also of the administrations and institutions involved in the restoration of SEO. Official sources of the Cabildo told this newspaper that the interior could be ready for Easter. In this context, the Xunta will allocate 800,000 euros this year, which adds up to the 17 million contributed by the State, so that everything is ready throughout 2020."

Thank you for this very detailed update 🙂👍

Thanks !!

Although this does mean that the work is now set to last 5-6 months longer than was originally hoped for.

A guide to speaking Spanish on the Camino - enrich your pilgrim experience.
Are they allowing pilgrims in? Has Mass returned to the Cathedral? If not, anyone know when it might be? Thanks.

So: if I darken the Cathedral door sometime in late September or early October 2020, what can I expect?

I first visited the Cathedral in the summer of 1977 -- when one could still press one's hand into the 'holy handprint,' and all that.... My last visit was forty years later, in 2017.... I'd be very sorry to arrive in SdeC and not be able to visit my old friend.... The world, the flesh and the Devil being what they are, I cannot assume that I 'll get another chance.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Yes, you can enter the cathedral, pray at the tomb and hug the apostle. There is no mass in the cathedral itself, but there is an 11:00 mass in the Corticela. For the rest, see the article linked/translated above ;-)

Hopefully mass will be held in the cathedral by then again ;-) and so far you can always pray at the tomb. Also, remember, I hold the keys to Santa Susana and, with enough advance warning, you can celebrate mass there ;-)

I wish someone could brighten up our day by giving us an update on the cathedral renovations as at Oct/Nov 2020, the above report dates to Jan 2020, but the world has changed permanently and drastically since then. Maybe a little video, that would be fantastic.
I would think that for many it would not be safe, or even possible to travel at this stage. I would love to receive an update. Stay safe everyone! With love from Corry x Guido

Hi @sopranocorry
Did you see the video posted a few days ago by @ivar Showing the cathedral right now.
Link to it here:

Digging into the link it seems the closure is to facilitate the removal of scaffolding and other restoration related stuff and cleaning ( I guess there'll be a lot of dust to deal with). "Until further notice" is a bit worrying - any decent project manager ought to know how long that'll take and any sensible client would just add 7 days for 'oops'.

Hello and good morning Ivar from Australia,

It was beautiful and amazing and emotional to see this lovely video you made at the cathedral. Thank thank you! We have gone thru s very difficult period. The camino experience seems so far removed from our current life and just so lovely to see again.
Melbourne Australia has been in complete lockdown for many months, first with 5 km restrictions and shopping for essentials only, then 25 km. We have kept the beast at bay during this second wave but at a great personal, financial and emotional cost.
We are now very optimistic with most restrictions lifted, However travel between states, or to other countries will remain impossible until a vaccine is widely available. But we can visit friends again (yeah!) and Australia has been without any cases or deaths for 14 days now. Double doughnuts we call it, =0 new cases, and 0 deaths. Would love to travel again, though, and we have lots of plans.
Our memories sustain us, of an amazing trip along Portuguese coastal camino in 2018.
So very glad we were able to experienced this. Thank you once again for keeping us updated. We will come again. Sending loving messages if strength and courage in this difficult time all over the world.
