Camino del Norte April-May 2020
Hello,

I'm planning walking the Camino del Norte from 1 April. I want to buy trekking poles from Amazon.es. Can I use Albergue de peregrinos Jakobi address and take the poles from the nearest post office then? How long the post office will keep my parcel? Maybe, it exists a better solution for this?

I know about Decathlon in Irun, but I plan to buy these poles because I have similar from Leki at home and find them very comfortable, especially how they fold.

Thanks.

When I walked EL Norte I sent my Black Diamond z poles (plus small scissors, small knife, hypodermic insulin needles for blister care) in a cardboard tube ahead by DHL courier to the hotel I stayed in Irun. I did the same when I walked the Frances sending the small very well wrapped tube to the SJPDP albergue. Both Times the tube was on my bed when I arrived. Then I check my backpack flying home.

I am not sure of the policy at a municipal albergue. I also do not know what the post office policy is. I would assume if you use the albergue address the post office will deliver it there. If they do there may better a few different hospitaleros and the one who receives it may not know what to do with it if it even gets delivered at a time when the albergue is open. I just see a whole host of issues with this idea. What I think you should do is spend a little money and stay at a nicer hotel in either San Sebastian or Irun that has a front desk that can receive your package. In this way you can call or email the hotel ahead of time to tell them to expect your package. Hotels do these things all the time. I know that they have a Ibis Hotel in Irun. They are really nice, well run hotels that are well priced.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Hi, Froll,
Welome to the forum!

I think you are asking about “poste restante”, not having the poles delivered to the Irún albergue. Is that correct? If you do that, you don’t need a delivery address, because you will pick the package up at the post office. I have tried to find some recent information on the Spanish Correos website, but have been unable to.
There are some old threads on this issue, I think the most recent is the one below.

Buen camino, Laurie

p.s. I have done a bit more searching and have come up with a fairly clear explanation of the Poste Restante system. Of course I have no way of knowing if it is accurate information, but it sounds solid.

When I shipped mine ahead as referenced above, I stayed at the SJPDP Beleri albergue. I contacted the owner before to get his agreement to sign for my shipment. He did it. In Irun the hotel also agreed and signed. For me it was more secure than posting it to a Correos.

Thanks all for your help.

The hotel was my first thought. The Ibis Hotel is a great option, thank you lt56ny. I just decided to stay closer to the airport and booked a Hotel San Nikolas in Hondarribia because I arrive at 11 a.m. and want to see this town before my Camino. I send them the same question and wait for the answer.

Thank you, peregrina2000. I find the same link and this one about Using Amazon in Spain. I wanted to make sure this information was correct.

And I bet you had a wonderful night in Beleri and had one great dinner too!
