Sanabres - Is it possible?

Camino Portuguese - Coastal (2017)
Primitivo (2019)
I only have 13 days to walk a camino and I do not want to do part of a camino. In 2017 I walked the Portuguese (Coastal) Camino and 2019 I walked the Primitivo. I want to do the Camino de Invierno in October this year, but there are hardly any municipal albergues on the route. Most of the sleeping places cost €20 or more. I cannot afford that.

I have now decided to do the Sanabres Camino, starting at Zamora. The only transport I can take from Porto to Zamora (Flixbus) will arrive at 1:05 am in the middle of the night in Zamora. I will probably take a short nap on a park bench before starting to walk at first light. There is an earlier bus, but I will not be able to take it.

My schedule is as follow:

Day 1: Zamora - Rigo del Camino 35km
Day 2: Rigo del Camino – Tabara 32km
Day 3: Tababres - Calzadilla de Tera 35km
Day 4: Calzadilla de Tera – Asturianos 42km
Day 5: Asturianos – Requejo 26km
Day 6: Requejo - A Vilavella 29km
Day 7: A Vilavella – Campobecerros 33km
Day 8: Campobecerros - Vilar de Barrio 34km
Day 9: Vilar de Barrio – Ourence 37km
Day 10: Ourense – Oseira 32km
Day 11: Oseira - A Laxe 29km
Day 12: A Laxe - Ponte Ulla 30km
Day 13: Ponte Ulla – Santiago 21km

Is it possible, or are there any other caminos I can do? I am a 62 years old male, reasonable fit and did the Primitivo (Hospitales route) without any major suffering.

If you were comfortable doing those kind of distances on the Primitivo there’s no reason to think you couldn’t on the Sanabres.
Incidentally my proposed stages on the Invierno have two nights at 20 euros, 1 at 16 and the rest range from donativo to 7, 8,10.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Don't know your fitness level but given that it will be October with shorter daylight, I would suggest starting at Puebla de Sanabria and taking it much more slowly. Puebla has excellent transport links (trains and buses).
A last stop at Outeiro gives a nice short stage into Santiago.
I am reasonable fit. Unfortunately no public transport on a Saturday from Porto to Puebla de Sanabria.

Or just walk the 100km from Ourense, starting out at the magnificent cathedral.
Thanks Kanga, but I want to walk at least 12 days with distances more than 20km per day.

Hi Eswee,

what about starting from Tabara?

That cuts out two days and allows more moderate stages. It is possible to reach Tabara by bus on Saturdays, the local bus-Society is Autocares Vivas, the Route is Zamora-Ribadelago
Buses Zamora - Tabara - Puebla de Sanabria

In my opinion Tabara-Santiago is feasible:
1. Tabara - Calzadilla de la Tera 34,7 km
2. Calzadilla de la Tera - Mombuey 25,6 km
3. Mombuey - Pueble de Sanabria 31,3 km
4. Puebla de Sanabria - Lubian 28,3 km
5. Lubian - A Gudina 24,6 km
6. A Gudina - Laza 35 km
7. Laza - Xunqueira de Ambia 33,6 km
8. Xunqueira de Ambia - Ourense 22,4 km (+ time for Sightseeing)
9. Ourense - Monasterio Oseira 31.6 km
10. Monasterio Oseira - A Laxe 29 km
11. A Laxe - Ponte Ulla/Outeiro 30,1 km or 34,3 km
12. Ponte Ulla/Outeiro - Santiago 21,2 km or 17 km (+ time for fetching your compostela at the pilgrim office)

If you can handle three 40km days, I think you could try the Camino Camino Zamorano Portuguès. It's a recently-revived path - Few pilgrims follow this route, but it is supposed to be very pretty and the volunteers responsible for reviving the route have cobbled together a surprisingly good network of accommodation.

General overview is on Gronze:

Facebook page for the route is here:

Hello @Eswee. I just did the VdlP from Salamanca last October. I don't see any reason why you can't do your proposed stages. BUT, you do not say what time of the year you are planning to walk. Just know that very long stages in the open, hot sun can be a challenge after many kilometers. I found that to be the most limiting factor for me, even in October! It is hot and dry! There is no real shade along the Way until well after Rionegro del Puente. Carry tons of water and some sort of personal shade from the sun!

Thanks for the advice. I will be walking in October. The same time of year I did the Portuguese and Primitivo camino's.

Can you please give me your stops on the Invierno. I have four €20 and another three above €10.
Admittedly there are more expensive days than I realised, but they are cancelled out (in my mind) by the cheaper days.
7 x 0 euros = 0
1 x 3 euros = 3
1 x 7 euros = 7
1 x 10 euros = 10
2 x 11 euros = 22
3 x 15 euros = 45
1 x 17 euros = 17
4 x 20 euros = 80
10 x donativo = (say) 100 euros, so a total of 284 euros for 30 days = under 9,50 per day
If you dropped your donativo to 5 euros, it would be 7,80 per day

(note I counted only the days where there is a cumulative total in the fourth column - where I plan to stop. Obviously you could do different stages, including some longer or shorter to make the most of cheaper options)

Thank you for the info. Is the time tables of the bus the same for a Sunday? My bus from Porto arrives at 1:00 am on Sunday morning at Zamora.

Hi Eswee,

the schedule I have linked above shows you, that there is a bus, which leaves Zamora bus-station on 9 o'clock on sunday-morning and reaches Tabara at 9.35 (you have to scroll down, it is the second sheet which starts with "Zamora" and the schedule is "Horas (2) domingos y festivos" (schedule 2 for sundays and holidays).

The Sanabres actually starts in Granja de Moreruela. This would put you 382 km from Santiago. This planner is usefull in planning your days. https://godesalco.com/plan/plata
Yes, but there are no buses going to La Granja de Moreruela on sundays. That's the reason for which my italian friends started from Tabara last year. A taxi Zamora-La Granja will cost 40-50 € (roughly 1 € per km plus additional fees for luggage, sunday).

Considering the temporary restraints, starting at Tabara is the better option. you do not really miss out a lot.

Why not just start from either Requejo oe Puebla?

Thank you for all the info Raggy. I do train before I walk, and hopefully I will be fit enough to do this route in 13 days.
Just to be clear, the route that I posted is a different Camino. It's the Zamorano-Portuguès, not the Sanabres.
Considering the temporary restraints, starting at Tabara is the better option. you do not really miss out a lot.
I consider the walk from Zamora to Granja de la Moreruela to be quite missable, but the stage from Granja to Tabara is magnificent, and the donativo hospitality at the Tabara albergue is a great experience. So I think it's a bit of a shame to take a bus to Tabara and start from there.
If possible, I think it's better to get a ride (Blablacar) to Granja and start from there.

If there's a totally missable stage, I think the Requejo to Lubian stage is it; A long, uphill, on the asphalt hard shoulder of a highway. I wouldn't recommend starting there. But it's a moot point because the OP wants to complete an integral Camino, walking at least 20km per day for 13 days without skipping of any stages, and finishing in Santiago. It's a bit of a Goldilocks request. He needs a Camino that's neither too long, nor too short ... neither too hard nor too soft ... but just right. :)
(To be clear, I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with that).

It's not all on hard shoulder, but yes you are quite correct. I did it last week and the diversions before Lubian is actually very nice. I'd also miss out the bit out of Zamora too as it's pretty boring.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

Hi Eswee,

the schedule I have linked above shows you, that there is a bus, which leaves Zamora bus-station on 9 o'clock on sunday-morning and reaches Tabara at 9.35 (you have to scroll down, it is the second sheet which starts with "Zamora" and the schedule is "Horas (2) domingos y festivos" (schedule 2 for sundays and holidays).

Thank you for all your inputs. I like your reply at the end. "He needs a Camino that's neither too long, nor too short ... neither too hard nor too soft ... but just right." Not really true. I just answered the previous post that suggest I only do 100 km. I have 13 days and I want to make the most of it by walking all the days, and then the 20km is a minimum distance per day. As my initial post show, my distances vary from 21 km to 42 km. Thanks again for all your inputs. Much appreciated.

I can assure you, that ALSA stopps at La Granja de Moreruela (select Provincia: Zamora and then Granja Moreruela. I took a bus from there to Santiago, when I had to split my cammino several years ago. But however, the bus does not run on sundays.
