Uncollected parcels in Santiago

I was wondering if anyone had sent a parcel ahead to Santiago whilst on the camino recently but have had to return home due to Coronavirus and parcel will be still there.

My parcel was mailed from Madrid to my accommodation in Santiago. (Hospedería San Martín Pinario ) .

Fortunately- it will be no great loss for me if it has to be disposed of due to non collection and it’s value is not worth the cost of having it returned by post to Australia.

What are others doing with similar items ?
Ivar @ivar would probably have some large items .. what are they doing .

Hello, Thank you for posting about shipping ahead. I have not considered this.
My trip is planned for the fall, (hopefully in Sept 2020).
I am curious what things would a person ship ahead , and why? I have received so many helpful tips on this forum and I really appreciate all the information. Thank you, JoAnna

Some folks ship ahead a suitcase or bag or box with their pre- and post-camino tourist clothes.

Some decide part way through their walk that they have too much stuff and rather than leave it behind at an albergue they mail it forward to the end.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

That's what I've always done, except my first year when I left my suitcase with a friend in Madrid. After that I decided that I'd have more flexibility in where I go after I reach Santiago if I have my things waiting there for me.
In addition to my "tourist clothes" I also pack my poles in my checked bag so there's no worries about getting them through security.

Large and small items can be sent to be held by Ivar in Santiago for small fee.

For instructions- see link below : (plus a screen shot)

Also., if you have made a reservation for accommodation in Santiago for end of your camino - some of them will hold a parcel until you arrive. You need to check first though. With my booking - they require my reservation reference /& date etc noted on the parcel you’re sending.

If you’re outside euro zone ; I bring stuff with me and post from within spain. Usually go to a post office (Correos) and (take a ticket)- and then I’m assisted to purchase the right size box (Caja verde).
Fill out form etc to send to Ivars storage or elsewhere. Very easy. They’ll help you.
Don’t try to mail stuff to Ivar from home if you live out of the Euro zone.

Others times I’ve posted camino gear home to Australia from Santiago at finish of my camino. - if not needed for forward travelling. Expensive but out of your hair.

My recent package only had a travel pillow., a set of underwear ., an ikea bag I use when checking my bag for flight home. Nothing I can’t replace easily.

Previous years I’ve mailed my few extra items and nicer travel shoes ahead to Santiago : if I’ve booked a tour after camino.

You can also send luggage and other items to be held at the post office in Santiago.

Or, if starting in St Jean Pied de Port you can use the service of Express Bourricot

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
