Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

Here is an excellent video on how to make sure the groceries you take home from the store or parking lot pick up service are fully decontaminated...Why put yourself at further risk?

I can't turn on the sound in my present environment...

But I see too much plastic, dude!! (for example at 05:45) Is it really necessary... 😱

Too bad you cannot listen. He sterilized the whole table, then put the contaminated plastic on the left side, then disposes it after. He is a doctor and always has used similar in surgeries to not infect patients.

Loved this video, Chris. Very clear and helpful.

BP, an overabundance of plastic is a fact of life in US supermarkets. I have several Spanish friends who have lived in the US for extended periods and they say that it is the second most shocking thing they see in the US, the first being our average weight. (Maybe the two are connected). The alternative is fresh food, but I have found in my own grocery store that these supplies are getting inconsistent and lots of normal fresh produce is out of stock. Not sure if this signals bigger disruptions in food distribution or not.

I see too much plastic
Yes, that's true. But I found that the last time I shopped for fruit and vegetables, I used more plastic bags than usual, in an attempt to protect my produce from contact with possibly contaminated surfaces and hands. With a little time and practice, I expect to figure out a better shopping technique. Let's tackle one thing at a time!

Thanks Chrissy for sharing this excellent video. I saw it during the week and now follow the regime used by the doctor. In reference to the plastic shopping bags, one thing you can do is still use your cloth/enviro shopping bags but spray them all over - inside and out - especially the handles - with a disinfectant spray such as Glen-20 after you’ve emptied out the shopping. Not perfect, but it’s another line of defence against CV.

A friend shared another great tip with me this week - on the occasions your credit card needs to be inserted/swiped in the card reader at shops, petrol stations etc, when you remove the card rub hand sanitiser over it and wipe it with a tissue so your card is disinfected. You can also bring an antibacterial wipe with you and wipe it immediately after using the card. As my friend said, the reader is the holder of countless microbes of bacteria. A lot of shops, petrol stations etc have automatic doors but on the odd occasion you do need to open a door use a tissue so your hand doesn’t come into contact with the handle. We all know this however I think it’s a timely reminder.

Another tip is to take a small ziploc bag, put an old handkerchief in it, liberally douse disinfectant on the handkerchief so it’s pretty damp but not dripping. Zip the bag and store in your handbag or manbag 😉. If you need to use an ATM you can wipe the screen before use. You can also use the handkerchief to clean your card after it’s been in the card reader. Once home the handkerchief can be put in the wash along with your clothes etc. I wonder if it would help if the handkerchief was microwaved for a short time to kill any bacteria before popping it in the wash. The doctor featured in the video said CV doesn’t do well in heat.

Stay safe and well everyone -

Cheers from Oz -

Excellent video. Interesting to know that, while heat kills the virus, freezing does not. I agree about the plastic, but in our town, at this time of COVID-19, we are not allowed to bring our cloth bags into the store.

Why can't you use cloth shopping bags? You do know that the recent suggestion that they are somehow unclean is misinformation put out deliberately by a lobby group financed by oil and plastic companies.

Also, Covid 19 is a virus and so it isn't alive and can't be killed. It is a bunch of clever chemicals that get replicated by our own cell structures and processes when it manages to get inside the cell.

It is possible to interfere with the structure and make up of the chemicals though and that is what soap does when you wash your hands with soap.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

Dang! I knew it...! 😲

Uhm... Do you have a source to support that claim? 🧐

I agree about the plastic, but in our town, at this time of COVID-19, we are not allowed to bring our cloth bags into the store.
We can also no longer use our own bags. In the US store employees normally do the bagging and this keeps them from catching Covid19 from bags that may be contaminated.

Now that I have had my first delivery of groceries and having watched that video, I have to say it is a bit anxiety producing. Of course things could change, but as of now the FDA says this:

A: Currently there is no evidence of food or food packaging being associated with transmission of COVID-19. Like other viruses, it is possible that the virus that causes COVID-19 can survive on surfaces or objects. For that reason, it is critical to follow the 4 key steps of food safety—clean, separate, cook, and chill.

Here’s their website in its entirety.

I’ve taken what I think are sensible steps based on that video, the FDA website, and what my son-in-law at the CDC says:

Leave stuff that doesn’t have to come into the house in the garage for a couple of days.
Wipe down big plastic containers
Wipe down anything that has to go into the refrigerator.
Wipe down counters and wash hands after all is put away.

What I found was that since my husband and I are self-isolating (he is at high risk), we had kind of gotten out of the hand-washing habit. Nothing was coming in or going out. Now we have gotten back into the swing of washing any time we touch anything that comes into the house (a delivery, mail). I think this is a realistic approach for me, given the fact that the virus won’t fly off the package, and even if it can be transmitted via packaging, I would have to get enough of it on my hands and then get it from there to my eyes or mouth.

And a PBS show has a segment on food safety. https://www.splendidtable.org/episode/704

Same guy on a podcast for Serious Eats.

These broadcasts have reduced the anxiety produced by the first video, so I guess the lesson is that we each need to strike the balance that works for us.

Dang! I usually quote my sources, habit as a computer scientist. I apologise for not doing so this time.

I had just read the article on The Guardian and now I can't find it again.

What it said is that this research (https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2004973?query=featured_home) that shows that Covid 19 can persist on plastic surfaces for 72 hours triggered the publishing of the misinformation. It traced the misinformation back to one specific lobby entity and then traced the finance for that entity. This showed the money coming from the oil and plastic companies.

It was great investigative journalism but I can't find it again ☹

Well my home is a no-go-plastic-zone… So they won't get any money from me...! 😆

We can also no longer use our own bags. In the US store employees normally do the bagging and this keeps them from catching Covid19 from bags that may be contaminated.
Here in NZ, grocery stores no longer bag for customers, the customer bags their own groceries (since the Covid 19 lockdown). This means that we all still use our multiuse bags.

Where I live, we always bag our own groceries. (Hence the staff don't need to handel my rucksack 😁), lock-down or not. So multiuse bags are quite the hype...!

So... earlier instructions concerning how to handle plastic bags & Covid19... are kind of lost on me :p

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
If you have to use a keypad don't touch it with your finger but use a cocktail stick. Carry a small rubbish bag to dispose of it.
Everything that has come into our house has been either quarantined or wiped,or both. Credit card too before we stopped going to shops. On home delivery now from farm☺ Vulnerable age group.
Doorbell wiped with sanitizer to protect our delivery folk who are all now instructed by govt to deliver to doorsteps without any contact

I guess many can do with better food hygiene but this guy, even though he is a GP who stand in his GP outfit in his kitchen, lost me as an attentive audience after 2 minutes 17 seconds when he said: Data we received from the CDC that found that on cruise ships they discovered active coronavirus particles 17 days later.

Pick some reliable sounding source on the internet and you find: Researchers examined the Diamond Princess, a cruise ship that was quarantined off Yokohama in Japan last month, and found coronavirus RNA—genetic material—in the cabins of infected passengers up to 17 days after the ship was vacated but before it had been disinfected. However, the CDC noted, “viral RNA doesn’t necessarily mean live virus was present.” So we can’t say for sure whether people would have been infected if they had come into contact with the surfaces where the virus was found.

Or google for reactions from actual virologists: It’s very important to remember that viral RNA will survive longer than actual infectious virus.

I like to understand the facts. I don't like it when people try to scare me with imprecise and fuzzy information, no matter how noble their intention may be.

I believe it is still an excellent video on ways to help deal with your groceries once you bring them home. We all can use some practical advise to help curb the spread of the virus. Learning a few extra tips is a good thing, irregardless.

And then you sit down to watch TV and pick up your remote controller which is covered with e-coli bacterium . . . there was a programme on UK TV this week where they took an average household and collected swabs for analysis - bear in mind this wasn't a dirty house.

The swab from the remote even had the bacteriologist reeling in shock.

BTW, when did you last disinfect your mobile phone? Yep, that's contaminated too and you put it right by your face.

More good tips..."one" article, video or news program can not cover everything. We keep getting new information(facts?) on covid19 almost daily.

It certainly raised my level of awareness even further which is a good thing so thank you for posting the clip. I had received a grocery delivery yesterday. I discovered that I had a decade old bottle of disinfectant at the back of a storage place. I wiped exactly one plastic package of cheese with it before I decided to google, gave up on it and changed my approach. Even more hand washing now ... 🙃.

I saw a photo of a guy picking up his coffee from a Maccy D drive through and spraying the disposable cup with sanitiser before taking it - anything to improve the taste I guess ☕

I found this

New CDC research conducted on the Diamond Princess cruise ship found traces of the coronavirus on some of the ship’s surfaces up to 17 days after passengers disembarked. But traces are not the same thing as live viruses.

I have to admit that I didn't watch the video above, but I have developed my own system for bringing groceries into the house.
The back of my car is the cleaning and containment zone. I keep a container of antibacterial/antiviral cleaning solution and cloths back there. Packaged foods that need to be refrigerated or frozen get wiped down before I put them in a clean box to bring into the house. I bring fruits vegetables like zucchini, apples, peppers etc. into the kitchen and place them in the sink to be washed with soap and water.
Packaged foods that don't need to be refrigerated are left in the garage until needed.
I used a pickup grocery service yesterday. Everything had been packed in paper bags. After putting everything away in the house or garage I took the paper bags to the garbage bin. Other than the fruit/veg that went into the sink nothing came into my house without being cleaned first, so I didn't have to worry about sanitizing my counters.

Well if the virus doesn't get me then the soap probably will!
Either that,or I'll be a basket case by the time this is over

Did I touch the handle, the keys, the bannister, the wheel.....
The bottle of hand sanitiser when I'm out...use it and then clean the bottle again......so on and so forth!!

With all the shelves cleared of anti bacterial hand wash....it makes me wonder if people ever actually washed their hands before this.
In reality any soap will do....bars of soap, gel ....plain or , smelly ,even washing up liquid, as long as 20 second washing rule followed

For people with actual hand washing OCD this time must be a nightmare for them with the ever present reminders on signs and TV

I'd rather rely on my gut instinct and resistance to laboratory food. If you don't hear from me for some time you'll know what happened...

I knew that all those little bars of soap that I've collected from hotels would come in handy sometime!

I saved the little mesh bags my onions come in, I take them to the store for all loose fruit & veg items ie. mushrooms & beans. It irritates me that loose potatoes are $4/kg but in a 2Kg plastic bag they are $3/kg, the same with the "ugly" fruit & veg...all pre packed in plastic.
