Maybe we can organize some Zoom meetings on specific topics. For example, @peregrina2000 has hosted a couple of calls on the Camino Olvidado, and she's thinking of having one for the Mozarabe as well.

Depending on interest we could even organize meetings that address other types of topics, perhaps with an "expert" speaker (forum member) and questions that are submitted in advance or using the chat feature. Some ideas are:
  1. Hiking umbrellas - the pros and cons
  2. Sleep system hacks - how to turn a cheap quilt into a custom sleeping bag
  3. Backpacks - different types, pros and cons, how to fit and adjust them
  4. Vegans on the camino
  5. Volunteering on the camino
  6. Wikilocs and other sources for GPS tracks

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
I can appreciate the enthusiasm for this, but think for specific equipment topics, the regular forum space serves the purpose of informing the most people most efficiently. People can read and reply at their own convenience regardless of time zone, and the record is there for anybody who comes along later and needs to know the same thing.
You can't bookmark a zoom meeting to come back to later when you need the information.;)

(But of course for simple but of course for simple meeting each other, Zoom is far superior.)

I agree for all the same reasons that I dislike YouTube reviews. I much prefer to read the information, maybe with pictures. There is too much wasted time with video reviews, and it's hard to zero in on the information that you are looking for. I haven't used Zoom, but I see it better for socializing and getting to know people in a different way.
Video is good for showing how to do specific things. For instance, when I bought a serger sewing machine, I found a video to be very helpful for learning how to thread it.

I enjoy the Zoom calls in their current organic way. And I finally put a face to some of the names

I would agree, that's how normal conversations evolve although I can't speak from experience as I haven't participated in the large Forum Zoom meet-ups. I would love to get to know more of you but the size of the group puts me off. Can anyone convince me that I'm missing out?
p.s. I have regular Zoom conversations with groups of up to about 6-7 so I'm definitely not anti Zoom.

There is an option for breakout rooms. The host can assign people, or let the system do it. Perhaps that would be a way to solve the difficulty of too many people for comfortable exchange. The host can come and go into the various breakout meetings, and also rearrange the people within a time frame...

The breakout rooms would put a lot of extra managing for Ivar and it would break up the natural flow, deciding who wanted to go into which room, why and for how long. It appears that the function of the breakout rooms is in business or education when a discussion point has been put forward. It can then be discussed in smaller groups and then a speaker from each group report back their findings to the entire group. For me, this would take away from the organic nature of the chats. I have enjoying listening to and joining in the conversations.

Hi. I haven't attended a Zoom on this Forum yet. I'd like to discuss Albergues on the Camino. Before all this Covid , I used to love the camaraderie of Albergues, the meeting and mixing with other peregrinos from all around the world. I often slept really well in communal dormitories, even with snorers!! My friends thought it was a treat to go in an Air B and B etc for a nights respite but this was not a treat for me. In the future how will Albergues function now we are so sensitised to social distancing? Will they be able to function and will beds be spread apart. We will feel differently about people coughing over us. It will take us all a long time to get over this so what will be the impact on Albergues. Has this already been discussed somewhere and I have missed it? Thoughts please. If there is a Zoom that included this topic I will try to join
Best Wishes Maggie
