Forever Pilgrim
Time of past OR future Camino
2009-2022: CFx6, CP, VdlPx2, Mozarabe, more later.
First. I want to give my thanks to all of you who has PM'ed me after I lost my older brother in a foreign land, unable to see him or participate in any kind of final ceremony, to this terrible virus one week ago. I have deeply appreciated your words, since it is coming from my own kind: Pilgrims.

Personally, I switch between numbness, sorrow, and tears, but also fond memories, which helps me some. Well, life must go on, I suppose, and maybe someday in the future I'll get a Compostela In vicario pro (in absence of) for him in Santiago.

Some of you have also experienced similar loss: I send my deepest condolences to you all.

Also, sharing your loss, seeking comfort from compassionate fellow beings, is important. Remember when you found new friends on the Camino (or elsewhere):

Shared joy is double joy.

Similar with loss:

Shared grief is half grief.

Hope this helps some.

Trist å høre dette, Alex! Tenker at du bringer han med deg i tankene på din neste camino. Håper du sjøl holder deg frisk og unna viruset i Tromsø.❤️

Alex,
Please accept my sincere condolences.

Many of us are feeling anxious and missing normal contact with family. Last month my aunt in Northern Italy passed away from the coronavirus and just 2 weeks ago here in the USA a cousin with the illness passed. For me faith, prayer and good memories has helped.

As you have experienced, nowadays the fate of loved ones with this virus find themselves in a hospital alone without family being able to visit, and without recovery, they die alone. These times are difficult... Be well, stay heathy and remember good memories.

@alexwalker, I did not know till now. It is hard to find a word. I knew when this virus started storming through our world that the damage would be deep in the psyche, and more permanent than any temporary hardship. Your trust in the people in the forum will, I hope, bring you some little comfort in the sharing of your loss and grief.

@alexwalker, just reading this now. I am so sorry for your loss. Suddenly there is an empty hole in the heart which being there would have helped fill, now it is just an empty hole.
However, let the sincere love from your friends, family, and fellow pilgrims help fill that hole with caring. You have done so much for all of us, we are pleased to have a chance to return the favor.
Abrazos, my friend. 🌈

Just as so many who posted above, I only found out after reading this thread.
So sorry for your loss 💔😢
Do rejoice in the knowledge that he is at Peace and relive all the good memories.

Sorry for your loss Alex. We've never met but I have always enjoyed your posts here, I feel like we are similar in nature, connected somehow. I have lost 2 brothers over the last few years, it hurts like hell, but memories are a real joy.

I'm sorry to hear this. Bereavement is always difficult to bear, all the more so in these circumstances. I send you my best wishes.

Oh Alex, I'm so very sorry.
What a crazy awful time for this loss!
I still have your signed compostela commemorating my lost sister (from our volunteer days at the Santiago convent).

Sending loving thoughts and wishes that you will find some comfort from us here. I lost my younger sister 3 years ago. The pain is less now but there is still sadness. Remembering the many joyous times we had helps. As does this Camino family! Blessings to all.

Ernie,
You have experienced profound losses as well recently. So sorry to hear about your aunt and cousin, especially as you couldn't be with them :( . Tough times. Blessings and peace to all your family.

Thank you so much, amiga peregrina. How different the world is these days from the joyful days we shared as eager and dedicated volunteers, living together and sharing meals etc. less than a year ago at the Santa Clara convent while working in the Pilgrims Office in Santiago, trying to do our best for all pilgrims, new and experienced, upon their arrival to the Pilgrims Office/us, at the end of their walk. The memories of our common work there still bring me joy. How life can turn in a blink...

I am so happy I could give you an In vicario pro on your Compostela for your late sister, by the authority given to me by the Office, as one of the clerks there. I hope it has comforted you a lot, amiga peregrina.

Unfortunately/tragically, when the Camino returns, I believe there will be a need for many In vicario pros...

Hello Alex,
I hardly know what to say to you in your grief and sorrow
To lose a beloved brother is hard enough, but to lose him in a foreign land where you cannot even grieve at the graveside must be for you, unimaginable pain...both psychological pain and indeed physical pain in your heart
I am so so sorry for your loss
Annette

Thank you so much for your kind compassion. Highly appreciated. It is unfathomable, surreal, really. But I am not alone, unfortunately. I wish I was.

Edit:
The foreign land was England (Bedford), while i am stuck in Arctic Norway.

I'm very sorry to hear of your loss, Alex. It's such a difficult time to lose someone, especially in a different country with no travel possible.
My husband's aunt passed last week and the family held a celebration of her life by Zoom. It was heartfelt and poignant, but not the same as in person.
Your brother was obviously an important person in your life; I wish you peace as you continue life's journey without him.
Blessings to you, peregrino.

I send my thoughts to you Alex along with all those of other group members here...to Everything there is a Season....please take comfort in the words of so many of our fellow pilgrims, peregrinos and perigrinas. Susanawee

I'm so sorry, Alex. I find myself without words, but offer heartfelt condolences. May he be at peace. I hope that soon you will be able to walk into Santiago for him. Take care, peregrino.

Så fryktelig trist å høre, Alex. Det er plutselig veldig langt mellom England og Norge - jeg bor her og har familien der. Tanken på å ikke kunne være til stede er vond, så jeg føler med deg. Hold deg fast i minnene.

Stay safe and well, peregrinos. Until we walk again.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Alex, though I may be late in sending my condolences they are no less heartfelt. May the wonderful memories shared with your brother sustain you. Warm embrace to you and yours.

I’m sorry for your loss, Alex. My sincere condolences. I lost my Pilgrim husband Adriaan ( fraluchi on the forum) just one year ago. I am only now slowly coming to accept his passing. It’s difficult and heartbreaking to be far away, with no possibility to travel and, worse, I think, no final goodbye. I cannot imagine not being able to have a wake, funeral and finally the beautiful songs sung for him at his graveside.

My deep condolances, Annakappa.

His English wife has decided to put his ashes to sea outside the coast of England, ignoring the wishes of me and his 3 children in Norway to have him returned home to Norway, as he wished, or us all coming to England at a later time and participate. She'll handle him alone, for some reason unknown to any of our family.

We live in hard times, indeed.
