I’ve just finished reading The Cypresses Believe in God, by José Maria Gironella, a novel published in the early 50’s about the run-up to the Spanish Civil War, and recommended by one of our members in another thread, for those who might be interested in Spanish history. Not an easy read, and I made pages and pages of notes in an effort to keep track of things. If anyone has any general thoughts on this book and would like to share them, I would be interested in hearing from you. To comply with forum rules, please private message me.

Bravo! The Cypresses Believe in God is one of the great books of the 20th century. Not hyperbole! I lent my copy out years ago and never saw it again.... Thank you for reminding me of it.

Delighted to hear this! It‘s great to have a good read. I think my best read, ever, is The Rougon-Macquart Cycle, by Émile Zola. And to think I got all 20 novels, in One Volume for something like $1.98 on Amazon. It kept me going for eight months. 😀

So sorry you lost your copy of Cypresses. Hopefully, it’s found a good home.

A bit weird, but interesting and thought-provoking quick read. Some of the places can be found in Brierley's Guide with different stories behind them.

That sums it up pretty well. I enjoyed it! ... In 2017 I ran into author Alexander Priolieu inside the Burgos bus station -- that's him, wearing a kilt. Yes, a kilt! (That's not me on the left, btw -- I couldn't grow a beard that good!)
