Better crank up production - Spain is making wearing of masks mandatory under certain circumstances as of tomorrow:

The Spanish government has confirmed that the wearing of face masks will be compulsory from Thursday in enclosed areas and on the streets when the required 2-metre social distancing protocols cannot be followed.

While children under six will be exempt from the order, masks are recommended for children aged three to five. People with breathing difficulties are also exempt from using masks.

Fernando Simón, the head of Spain’s centre for health emergencies, said the measure was intended to protect both the wearer and those around them. He also said there were clear differences between going for a solitary walk in the countryside and navigating busy city streets.

“The rules aren’t that complicated: you need to keep a distance from others of around 2 metres,” he said. “If logically, you’re on the street and realised that won’t be possible, you put on your mask and that’s that.”

Until now, face masks – which are being handed out at train and metro stations – have been compulsory only on public transport.

and yet some are saying the mask does not prevent you from being exposed?
They don't prevent you from being exposed to the virus - that's a risk you take by leaving home.
They might prevent infected people from spreading the virus and also help protect you when somebody sneezes and coughs in your direction.
The best bet - stay home and wash your hands (a lot).

so, in other words, everyone is suspected of being a spreader of the virus? I live in Ontario Canada every day I go out on long hikes and am in excellent health for a seventy-five-year-old man and am on no meds. This would have been my Twelfth Camino if the pandemic had not prevented me. Next year for sure let's be hopeful pilgrims.

I wouldn't worry about coming into contact with the crew from the ISS, everybody else I treat with suspicion - besides it's great fun to walk into your bank and not be asked to remove facial coverings in order that "they may serve you better" 😷

I hate it when people try to crash in on a crisis - the Olsen masks I've been making for family and friends cost me less than £1 ($1.50 CDN) each, discounting time spent - and that's buying the cloth retail off of ebay! So good for you David - try tucking a non-woven layer (diaper liner, coffee filter cone even kitchen towel) between the Buff layers - the Buff is made from fairly open weave material - and junk it when you wash your Buff (ie after every use).

I've been making masks too. I use a pattern similar to the Olsen mask, but I like the fit better. I am using old sheets that I dye to make the masks. So the cost is very low, and I have fun dyeing the fabric to create unique designs.
I use elastic hair ties for ear loops, and they are very comfortable.

Something that I add to my masks is a neck string, so that when I'm outside walking with no one around I can wear the mask as you would a necklace, or eyeglasses on a cord. Then as I get near other people I can quickly put it on my face.

I don't know why exactly, but this made me laugh, out loud!!! Sorry, no intention to offend! But still laughing..........

(of course the third one is "I know that I am crazy but thats the only thing that keeps me from going insane"...but somehow it immediately invokes ###1 & 2.... ;))

Ah! Our Queen of the Tie-Dye ♥ ;)

I sling mine in a similar fashion - it's too hot to wear all the time (it's England, in the early summer and it's hot?) I wear it around the neck and can pull it up onto my face when necessary.

I go across the back of the head twice - BTE hearing aids and specs don't leave much space behind my ears but the top band sits atop the occipital ridge (sticky out bit at the back) comfortably and I can quickly cinch up the bottom at the nape of my head using the toggle.

I made one for a friend and she replaced the elastic (it felt too tight) with paracord which she ties in a bow at the nape.

Here (in Montana, USA) they are saying that non medical masks are primarily useful in preventing you from touching your own face—to help stop you from infecting yourself from contact with contaminated surfaces (until you can wash your hands), rather than to prevent direct infection from another person. . .wish I had a Camino mask instead of the one I sewed together from a pillow case!

Love that Waylon Jennings tune!
Also, self deprecating humor is the best therapy.
Apropo right now for sure.

Although I carry a mask that Peg made I don't use it when walking in the woods. When meeting other walkers I prefer getting far off trail for a bit and risking the ticks than wearing the mask.

It is a bit weird though giving people a friendly greeting while scurrying away from them.

I never wear my mask outdoors, only in essential stores and I rarely go. I use the Walmart grocery app most of the time.

Wow - of course - I have two or three buffs of varying colours and patterns. I should get them out they are not as "frightening" as some of the face masks we see around.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
that is some jungle behind you! 🤣
Ok — now I get it. Is that an Urban Jungle? Staying home and wearing a mask in the market must be having a strange effect on my sense of humor. FYI: we are still in red zone in this part of Pennsylvania and people are expected to wear a mask in public.

Masks have been obligatory in shops and on public transport in Portugal since May 4th, and I wear mine whenever I’m out of the house.

Today the mask went on a field trip to the Assembleia (national parliament building), and its owner even had a haircut since the last photo.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.
I love spoonflower.com for any really special fabric patterns. If you go to the site & search for 'santiago compostela' you will see lots of great camino patterns (sample below)! I would choose one of the light cotton varieties or maybe the performance pique if you want something stretchier.

Pretty pattern but cotton, stretchy fabrics are ALL USELESS as protective equipment.
No point wearing any mask unless they are 'single use' - dispose of it after use (or boil it before drying it for reusing). And, yes, the masks are not to protect the wearer, they are to be worn to prevent spread of infection from wearer to the environment.

Of course, I was forgetting the fun factor. And, it IS lovely to see all the creativity emerging amidst the gloom.... sorry I snapped. But, honestly, home made masks may make one feel more cheerful but they will not protect you from the virus. So wear in good health, but do not rely on them for protection. Stay well all, wash your hands!

I don't wear a mask generally except next week when I go to eye doctor. because it's mandatory.

And, of course, you may not even know that you have/have had C-19

Take a look at this article it's long but interesting.

"Since January, the race has been on to try and identify just how many asymptomatic cases are out there, with varying findings. One study in the Italian town of Vo reported that 43% of the town’s cases of Covid-19 were asymptomatic, while initial reports from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigation into the spread of Covid-19 on the Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier in March, suggest that as many as 58% of cases were asymptomatic. Some 48% of the 1,046 cases of Covid-19 on the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier proved to be asymptomatic while, of the 712 people who tested positive for Covid-19 on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, 46% had no symptoms."

I think I'm OK but would rather suffer the inconvenience of wearing a mask that have that nagging fear of "what if I infect somebody and they die" lurking in the back of my mind.

prompting me to share a photo of our resident animal, wearing one of my face coverings...
I have moved on since the start of the debate about masks. I wear a scarf of one kind or another around my neck, and when in the vicinity of others, I lift it up and cover mouth and nose, to protect them from me, and me from them. I also have moved on from hoping others will observe the distance suggested. I will cross the road rather than wait to find out if the persons approaching me are inclined to respect the distance. I also have a bad habit of waking very early, and that allows me to go out for an hour, either walking or on my bike, so there are fewer people - but I always have my scarf. A neighbour has supplied me with a pack of disposable masks in case I need them when we are released from house arrest and allowed to do our own shopping, on 8th June. This, and to show respect to those I encounter when I need to go to the store, especially the employees who are required to wear masks.

The best explaination of how regular masks can help during Covid-19 is the Reddit post called Wear Your Mask: The Urine Test, the pic of which I shall post below. In the meantime, here's the link: Wear Your Mask: The Urine Test
