Exos 38 Question

I know there are a lot of threads on backpacks like this but I have a very specific question.

Has anyone with a newer season(2019 or 2020) Exos 38 been able to use it as a check bag when flying?

If anyone has one laying around can you whip a tape on it and get an overall length measurement without the top cap?

I am aware that the Osprey website gives numbers, but not without topcap and in my experience they do vary a bit.

Thanks all!

M

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Do you mean carry-on or checked (hold) bag? It's the carry-on size that's more restrictive and airline dependent. It's definitely well within a checked bag size.

What back length were you thinking of? My husband has an Exos 38 in Large and it is too long to go as Ryanair handluggage, ie it is longer than 55 cm. 61, if memory serves. The rest of the bag can be cinched in and the lid taken off, but the back length is fixed.

Very light, comfortable and compressible poncho. Specially designed for protection against water for any activity.

Our Atmospheric H30 poncho offers lightness and waterproofness. Easily compressible and made with our Waterproof fabric, its heat-sealed interior seams guarantee its waterproofness. Includes carrying bag.

€60,-
Sigh... was chatting with my wife about new luggage while posting and had a traffic jam in my brain.

I meant carry on. If the Exos 38 in Large wont go on Ryanair its a no go for me. I fly Ryanair, Easyjet, Hop, etc a lot and carry on is a must.

Thanks very much.

I have an Exos 38 (L), I measured it when packed last Camino and it was over the acceptable length for cabin luggage (easyJet) and that was without the lid,. In the end I put the lid back on and put it in the hold. I considered underpacking it, and taking less than I would normally for a winter Camino so it would appear as a smaller bag at check in, but I decided for a minimal amount of savings I would rather have a stress free check in.

Well my husband's Exos and Stratos in Large are both too long, but the good news is that an Osprey Talon 44 in M/L fits exactly! A little shorter but still good for tall people and though not as rigid, it has stays in the back. Hope you find the right pack!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
I have traveled with the Exos 38 on more than 10 times internationally and have never had a issue as a carry on. We are flying at the end of July . The flight we are on has told us no overhead baggage ??????. So we will carry our Zpack Nero frameless pack to put under the seat. I haven't checked bag for several years.

I have the women's version, an Eja 38 (S) and the frame is about 58cm tall so too big for Easyjet hand luggage. The brain (top section) made no difference but I left it at home anyway. I checked it in and was able to carry my Leki Carbon Vario poles inside so didn't mind too much.

Have you flown on Ryanair or Easy Jet? These ultra low cost carriers are super strict with carry-on sizes. They make more income when people have to check their bags.

My daughter-in-law has a 2017 Exos 38. She did leave the top portion behind, but it definately fit above the seat overhead compartment.

Which airline? Ryanair and Easy Jet carry-on sizes are smaller than many US airlines and on Ryanair you need to pay extra to be guaranteed space in the overhead bin.

It was a Ryan Air flight in 2017 and none of us paid extra to keep our backpacks with us on the flight back to Madrid from Santiao. They possibly have become more strict each year since.

Well I finally got my paws on an Exos 38, aaaaaaaaannnnnnddddd I dont like it. Go figgure. The frame is oddly huge for a small capacity pack. I have no doubt it is a great pack for some, but not me I fear.

Looks like I will just stick with my beloved REI Trail 40 thats been my faithful "back monkey" for years.

Thanks again for the input all,

M

I'm 50/50 with it, if I could rectify the one little thing that niggles me with it then it would be the perfect bag for me, but as it stands and after my recent Xmas camino if I had to walk a Camino next week then I would be looking at my other older bags to see if they could withstand 2 or 3 weeks on the camino. I have an old one from Decathlon which was cheap but it does the job, the best thing I can say about it is I forget it is there, this isn't the case with the exos38.
