Roncesvalles is open!

Only Europeans and a stranded Mexican.

Since their new capacity is 90, and given that today is the first day open, looks like they will soon be at capacity.

Hoping this summer goes well on the Francés.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
A friend who started in Avila on the 22nd June and who is in La Robla on the Salvador tonight said that when he walked on Monday between Hospital de Orbigo and Leon, going in the opposite direction,he counted 40 pilgrims, several on bikes, he went the road option so he would not have seen the pilgrims from Vilar Mazarife or the ones heading there.

Only during the weekend (last Friday and Saturday) there were 70+ pilgrims in Roncesvalles. The last few days there were much less pilgrims: 40, 58, 39. Maybe many people wanted to start as soon as it was possible, but at the moment the numbers are decreasing.
Anyone who starts: wearing a facemask in the albergue is mandatory (you can buy one at the reception desk of the albergue) and take a sleeping bag with you. The price for a bed is now € 14,-- including a disposable sheet and pillowcase.

@laninam, sounds like you have quite exact up to date information. Are you at the albergue now?

No, I will be there next September. I am the secretary of the workinggroup of the Dutch volunteers; two of our members, of which our chairman, is there at the moment and of course they keep me informed from day to day!
Thank you very much for this practical update. How did your friends manage regarding finding places to eat? From what I have read some Albergue have stopped providing meals.

Roncesvalles is open!
Tehe , can you remember the fiasco we had in 2016 when someone reported that due to the extremely busy time , 900 pilgrims were being held back by French authorities in SJPP. One of our forum members chirped up , 'FREE THE SJPP 900!' . It turned our to be a movie shoot with 900 extras ................Waaaaaaaaa!😂🤣

In many albergues - and also in Roncesvalles - the kitchen for pilgrims had to be closed due to Covid-19 measurements. But the restaurants are open, so getting a meal is no probllem.

Greetings from Roncesvalles! We are full tonight, Sat 1 August: 90 pilgrims. It's busiest at the weekend. During the week there are generally fewer, but it's probably wiser to book. That's only possible on the website and a full day before.
