I just posted this to Instagram today and since it's one of my faves, I might as well put it here too!

One of the most evocative sights on the Camino de Madrid was this ruined 16th-century stone tower in Tamariz. Perched high up in an arched window, a stork surveys the town and the Meseta beyond.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

I too, stayed at the municipal in Cacabelos. I liked the quirky little "mini cabins"...definitely a "one of a kind" experience on the Camino Frances.

And think how popular this place will be in a post-covid world, when we will all probably still be hoping to avoid large dorms! I think I stayed there on my very first camino in 2000, or at the latest in 2002. This was back in the days when I was an all-albergue girl, and it was a heavenly respite from the snoring!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

best hot chocolate EVER in the truck stop/restaurant/hotel in Castiledelgado!!! Needs to be spooned rather than drank :D
I was able to have my spoon stand up in my sumptuous cup of hot chocolate in Leon, directly across from the cathedral...well, possibly a slight exaggeration.😊

Wonderful @jungleboy !!
Today, one more pic of Pancorbo. I really liked this place.

(Apologies being lazy, and posting from my media files here. My computer is on its way out and that's where my photo files are... but I'm posting this from my phone.)
Oh, please try to find a way to transfer your photos. However, one fine day... it will not matter.

Looking through photos this morning, I found this one of the church in Castroncelos on the Invierno. I took the photo at the time thinking that it looked odd. The tower not fitting with the building. I regretted not stopping at the time for a visit. I did a bit of research and most of the information I found is about it's more recent 20th century history.

The atrium of the Igrexa de Santiago de Castroncelos with it’s medieval origins, is a place of Historic Memory. Victims of the civil war were buried here. The attached video tells the story of one of the victims. Sorry - the text won't attach in it's translated form.

Ah! The ability to stop down is not a feature coming to my iPhone anytime soon.
Beautiful effect.
There are some good iphone filters that do very, very well without having to carry a DSLR. I'm actually considering this for my next Camino so I can reduce my gear weight by 4-5 kgs by leaving my camera at home and just using my iphone.

The atrium of the church of Castroncelos (A Pobra do Brollón, Lugo) is a place of memory. Victims of fascist repression during the Spanish civil war were buried there. ARMH worked there in July 2016, under the direction of archaeologist René Pacheco. In 2018 our team also traveled there to try to recover more bodies, in a sadly failed attempt.

In this video, Carmen García Rodeja tells us about Silvosa, the socialist tailor who walked in 1938. The cufflinks of his shirt appeared in the grave documented in 2016. These objects are part of the exhibition Little things, which can be visited again in Santiago de Compostela.

Wow, that video packs quite a punch. I saw that there was an entire exposition with the same title “Las Pequeñas Cosas” funded by the government as part of the Ley de Memoria’s focus on confronting the reality of the past.

This exposition was supposed to be an in-person one, traveling all around the country, but COVID changed that. Now we can all see it virtually on this website. There is a page with a link to more videos like the one posted by @Theatregal.

Thanks so much for posting this, I’ve walked by that church three times and never had an inkling.

Thank you so much for finding and posting these links!! I hope that sometime in the future, the exposition will travel and we'll have a chance to see it. Wonderful that they're posting it virtually - it's incredibly moving to see the images and hear the stories. The title itself, "The Little Things" tugs at my heart.

At 17 km, that makes it the longest bridge in Europe! That pales in comparison with some of the other long bridges in the world, but I remember feeling very uneasy after about 10 km of being suspended out over the water. I can’t imagine I’d enjoy a 100 km bridge.

Just...no.
(...shiver...)
Even 12k would feel uncomfortable.

Thank you for these haunting and sobering links, @Theatregal and @peregrina2000.
I'm ashamed to say I didn't pay attention to that church, and vaguely remember dismissing it completely because of the modern portico. Call me Ms. Precious.
But I did take a photo that included it.

It is no longer the longest bridge in Europe, that is the Crimean bridge. Still the longest in the EU though

Plus it is only 17km if you include the access roads. Bridge itself is 12km

I’ve now watched several, and the one about the bill for the 13 bottles of cognac is haunting.
Truly. The tragic, chilling story that the information on a simple dated receipt holds. As do the beautiful cufflinks of Silvosa the tailor. All the stories. The exposition is remarkable.

The same reason I didn't stop to visit it :) Another reminder for me to not "judge a book (or a church) by it's cover." !!

Since we're on San Martin, here is mine:

There are no fond memories of my visit there. I didn't know how famous the building was, and just wanted to sit inside quietly. But of course there was an entry fee, and a tired and slightly rude person asking for it. So I left in disgust not having the slightest idea what I would be missing.:(
Now I know better!

(Actually, I had bad luck across the board in Fromista — the albergue had been recommended by somebody, but turned out to be quite unwelcoming. Since then, I haven't stopped in the town...but next time...)

Agree too about the muni in Fromista. What a contrast with the friendliness of the muni in Mansilla de las Mulas.

I agree about the municipal albergue at Fromista.
Agree too about the muni in Fromista.
Well, now I don't feel so bad about my choice to stay where I did – because the muni doesn't sound a whole lot better.
Where I stayed was a private albergue. Given the reviews it gets, clearly I'm not the only one who's had a bad experience.

My only bad experiences with both the muni's and hospi's on five various caminos were in Zubiri on the Frances, and in Berducedo on the Primitivo.
That said, I was still happy to be indoors with a pillow under my head.😌

Not the first pic here of the church in Fromista but still a gorgeous sight.
This was 2011.

Sadly, we missed this beautiful Church completely! :( It was an extremely hot day the day we walked to Fromista and we were staying in a Hostal across the road from Iglesia de San Pedro, which is quite away from the camino. By the time we reached our accommodation and did the various chores one does, because of the heat we didn't do much exploring. Then we left Fromista the next morning at 5.55am to beat the heat! So probably didn't even notice the other Church, it was probably to dark!
We, of course had hoped to walk the Frances again this year, and would have hopefully seen it then, let's hope we can next year!

It's not that I must show off my boardwalk picture too but that the previously posted pictures help me choose what to show next (I've submitted all my San Martín photos already). I've been having a hard time picking pics lately.

Approaching the western beach at Finisterra.

I (Anne) am also having a hard time choosing photos, that is why I went back to the start of our Portugues Caminho to see if there were some different ones that I hadn't already chosen previously!
So for today :

I got away with this before so I'm doing it again. Two different pictures taken close together where I can't tell which is the one I like better.

On the way to Finisterra.

Just an opinion but as they are, I like the zoomed in version more but if you cropped most of the sky off the wide angle, I think it would be a very interesting pano-like photo.

Thanks. I should do that with the original but I tried with the scaled down version I posted. I cropped out shadow on the bottom too.

There is an article in today’s El País in English about the exhibit. Very moving.

Thank you for this article Laurie, and for the past stories the article leads to. Yes, deeply moving. Such important work by the ARMH (Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory)
