I walked it in April 2019 and the weather was good only one real day of rain but being from Scotland this wasn’t an issue as it was warm rain 🤣 if you are looking for a day off then probably Padron or Pontevedra or just have shorter walking days to spend a few extra hours in each town buen camino mi amigo 👍

We walked in late-March, early-April 2017. We had one day of drizzle a day out of Porto, but rest of walk was in absolutely beautiful weather!

Regarding a rest day, Pontevedra would be a good choice. We also didn’t want a 31 km day so we broke up the Tui to Redondela stage with an overnight in O Porriño. It turned out to be a good decision.

Hi - I would definitely second the suggestion of Pontededra as opposed to Padron which is quite industrial - also Caldas de Reis roughly half way between Pontevedra & Padron is a pleasant spa town.
April weather should be fine - Buen Camino

Caldas de Reis gets my vote. That early in the season the albergue may be clearly visible on your left as you cross the Roman Bridge. Be aware that the warm water foot spa just prior to the bridge will be pleasantly warm for your feet but a pain in your bum should you slip as you enter. Been there done that!

Will O Dwyer,

Are you planning to start walking in Valenca do Minho or Tui?

Walking north to Tui on the camino from Valenca do Minho which was the old frontier you pass through a spendid 17th c fortress designed by Vauban and then cross the river Minho on the 19th c International bridge designed by Eiffel. The view to Tui as the lights come on at dusk is splendid! Within the fortress the camino passes through the garden of the pousada/hotel Sao Teotonio. Stop at their outdoor bar to sip a coffee or more, relax and admire that panoramic view.

December 2011 after finishing the Camino Frances I continued to Finisterre, per usual, and then walked down to the border at Tui/Valenca de Minho. The weather was cold and very WET; often I was the only pilgrim. However, all the Galician xunta albergues along the Camino Portugues were GREAT with welcome heat, good showers and handy pilgrim kitchens.

Happy planning and Bom caminho to you both.

It depends on what you are looking for in your day off:

I would probably pick Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis, or Padron.

Pontevedra is probably the largest town en route. It has a number of nice museums and churches for plenty to see and do. If that is what you are looking for, it is your best choice.

Caldas de Reis, on the other hand, is a spa town centred around hot springs. If you want to relax and pamper yourself on your rest day and really rest, this is your best choice.

Padron, on the gripping hand, is the choice for those whose pilgrimage motivation is a bit more religious or centred on St. James. Aside from Santiago de Compostela itself, Padron is probably the place on any Camino that is most closely associated with the legends of the saint himself. It is here you can see where he is reputed to have preached when he was alive and here where you can see the stone marker (padron) where the stone boat that fetched him back to Iberia after his martyrdom is supposed to have been moored. If seeing the Saint James sites attracts you, this might be your best choice.

No problems with April .
Start in Valenca , changed it at last , sorry all.
Stop in any of the 3 mentioned above , more to see and do in Pontevedra according to HRH
Not a long distance , take your time and maybe the stop is not required.
Some lovely CR and pensions available which will love your company.

You probably meant "Start in Valença". While starting in Valencia would get you a top-notch paella, it is probably not worth all of the extra kms.

On the other hand, if you want to walk the Camino de Levante, Valencia is a great place to start but you'd end up on the Frances in Burgos rather than on the Portugues.

I did the exact same thing. I actually took a couple rest days in Pontvedra due to some tendinitis.

At Tui you can go to A Guarda on the ocean (zero altitude) and take the coastal route to Vigo before connecting to the interior at Redondela. It is easier on your partner. Buen Camino. I will be walking in April as well.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Thank you.We are starting from Vigo in October. Not sure how many of us but will get my son's and grandson's ashes there.

I have walked four of my various Caminos starting in mid April and surprisingly have had very little rain each time. It's been my "lucky" month to start.😃
P.S. I loved Pontevedra.
I have also walked three caminos starting in mid April and had very few rainy days, but now it may be different with this global warming

I would like to walk the river route in Tui next month. I can see on google maps exactly where it starts, but it seems a bit overgrown. Has anybody used this route this year or last year...
Hello, my friend of 50+ years and I are on our first Camino walk. We are looking for: 1) safe, comfortable hostels in Lisbon; 2) stages from Lisbon to Porto (via Tomar) in about 16 days...
Hi I have searched everywhere to see if there is a luggage service from Lisbon to Porto. I know there is from Porto to Santiago, but Lisbon ???. Thanks for any info.
