Yes I've watched most of her camino related videos, some of them before walking the same routes, so I found them both inspirational and really helpful! Yes I'm a fan, quite in awe of her vast hiking experience truth be told! A little jealous of her drinking ability too!!!

I find her very videos helpful. I wish there were less pictures of drinking beer, wine and alcohol, especially during the walks...

I'm sorry to disagree with you. While Sara comes across as carefree and fun, she also urges others to be responsible for themselves, not to be reckless and she gives many helpful tips and suggestions to that effect.

That she enjoys indulging herself in local customs, in food, drink and bridges is part of her charm. To my mind, she is honest and fun and lives in the moment. People are free watch or not watch..

IMO it is not wise to be actually drinking beer while actually walking/hiking a camino alone. This goes for hiking in the Alps, or any strenuous activity. It would be optimal to rehydrate at the end of your walk, before consuming alcohol. ...better leave the alcohol until your done walking...especially if your alone!
Alcohol is a diuretic which causes dehydration and impacts your electrolyte balance and judgement. It can cause hypothermia, especially in coldweather. CDC recommends no more than 1 drink per day!
I have nothing against indulging oneself in culture and food, and alcohol in moderation.😀

I think I could talk about the Camino endlessly for hours. :p

As for alcohol consumption.... sure it isn't for everyone! I also indulge in a lot of sugary chocolate, salty cured meats, and decadent pastries while walking on the Camino. :) While at home I don't drink or eat nearly as much!

Plus, on the Camino, I'm definitely not trying to attain any sort of high-level athletic performance. Pushing my physical limits is at the very bottom compared with enjoying the walk, sampling regional delicacies, craft brewery beer tastings etc.

When I have a beer at a bar - I'm also chugging water and refilling my bottles to stay hydrated. Through my past personal experiences, I have a keen understanding of how to keep my body at optimal electrolyte levels. Water management is critical when I am wilderness hiking alone in areas like Israel's Negrev Desert or the Mojave Desert in California. I always carry emergency electrolytes if I run into trouble. Also, if I feel particularly dehydrated I choose to drink Aquarius rather than ordering a beer.

However, people embark on the Camino for a multitude of different reasons. If physical fitness, weight loss, and athletic endurance is the goal ---- forgo all alcohol, processed foods, refined sugar, and don't stay out late enjoying a festival bonfire with locals. ;)

Sara, sincerely, in general, I like your videos.... in terms of the trails,
sites, food, lodgings, and yes, sampling of regional drinks.

Whether one is a long distance runner, or, a couch potato, is irrelevant. The CDC suggests limiting alcohol to one drink per night.

In addition, to diuretic effects that increase urine output, alcohol inhibits the production of vasopressin, also known as the antidiuretic hormone (ADH). The main role of this hormone is to regulate the ability of your kidneys to reabsorb and retain water. When alcohol causes a decrease in vasopressin, your body can’t retain water as effectively, compounding the effects of dehydration. Thus It is better physically to rehydrate before drinking alcohol. If one is thirsty or not, walking a trail drinking beer is just not a sound option health-wise. Having a glass or two on occasion in the evening, after arrival and rehydration is likely a better choice.

Sampling the local foods and wines is all part of my Camino.
Though during the walking day, I might only have a glass.
Very conscious of the dehyration effects.
I make up for it in the evenings though ;)

Though Pat and I discovered a very nice Sangria over lunch in Zubiri.......
The remaining walk to our 'night stop' made for an interesting 6 km stroll.
I'm not sure how many times she asked "Are we there yet"........
Pat does not normally drink alcohol but loved the Sangria!
(She must have had a max of 2 glasses)

I don't, though I used to 25 years ago.


I just don't understand why people still choose to smoke.
Almost everyone in Spain seems to smoke at times.
Makes sitting in outdoor dining areas horrid.

I guess it's a free World.
 
The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
The discussion on the video, of how we interact with our cameras and the future viewers, was interesting and relevant. For example, frequent selfies might sometimes indicate vanity, but it is more often a greeting and delayed communication to others. Sara and Rob discussed how the future video audience inspires the videographer to do certain things. The beer/wine tasting and drinking is something that has become part of Sara's on-video persona. It has become a shared joke that likely gets exaggerated in the videos, while also showing her to be a person with possible faults like the rest of us. That's why we watch!

Interesting article but like others said here : we can all assume that adults make wise choices.

I prefer drinking a refreshing beer ( with a bottle of water close by ) than drinking one of those supersugary non alcoholic cans.

Which Camino is Best?

Great interview, thank you for posting it. I think when we have (at least mostly) passed through this pandemic time there will be many of us out on the various caminos, even the remote ones, which may not be nearly so remote for a while. Sara’s pitch for the LePuy is right on, it’s a gorgeous walk though a comparatively quiet one.
