Do you carry any Good Luck, or other tokens?

Arn

Veteran Member
When I was younger I had a rabbit's foot. I thought it would bring me good luck. Later, as a football (soccer) goalie, I had a special jersey I wore hoping we would win the match. On my first Camino, I carried the required rock, a prayer card for my recently deceased cousin and a Rosary. Since I fell off a rock and received serious injury, the rock may not have worked.
Now, did you carry anything that you hoped would bring you good luck, or favor, while on Camino?

A blue poker chip - a remnant of a management training course many moons ago of which the core message was ‘focus on the blue chips’ or ‘don’t sweat the small stuff’ and my ‘lucky’ krugerrand which could feed me, accommodate me and get me home to the UK from anywhere in Europe.

(... and a couple of immodium some painkillers and a flash drive with ID on it).

And still I wonder why my packing list fills a side of A4 paper ...

On my first pilgrimage, I was walking through Arzua on the Frances when I noticed that people were going into a church on the right. As it was Sunday, I decided to follow them in for the Sunday mass. After the mass, a women from the congregation came to speak to the pilgrims who had attended the service. She offered each of us a shell, painted with the cross of Santiago. These crosses, she explained to us, had been painted by a man in the congregation. His son had died and he was asking for prayers for his son from the pilgrims who passed. This has been my camino shell ever since. The paint is largely gone. But I fasten the shell to my pack on every camino, to remind me to pray for the son, and for his father. I will always take it, because I believe that no parent ever ceases to grieve for a child who died. This is not a good luck charm, but a special token which reminds me to pray.

I was given this tiny mouse (Pascal) by dear friends. He's travelled with me on my last 3 caminos and photos of his adventures are sent home to my friends and the children in my family. I've come to enjoy his company and I expect (hope) he will continue to be my travel companion for a long time. This is Pascal arriving in Santiago from the Invierno in 2019.

I love Pascal! 😊
P.S. I think I remember a photo @Tincatinker posted a similar photo in front of the Cathedral of Pascal's donkey sitting on top of his backpack...but I could be dreaming.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

That’s lovely.

Some time ago I was in a mountain rescue team. At an annual dinner one of our members. Let’s call him ‘Parry’, because that was his name, became separated from his underwear by means not fit for publication on this most genteel forum.

At the following annual dinner it was found, and evidenced by photographs that ‘Parry’s pants’ had circled the globe, visiting every continent including Antarctica and had been pictured with a fair number of celebrities. I personally took them on a tour of India. This was before the days of photoshop when one still had to send the film off for processing.

The Burro Peligroso rests these days in my cabinet of curiosities. She may join me on the Thames Path next month if the winds of fortune are blowing gently. Strangely she has traveled 9 countries in 2 continents yet never hiked at home 😉

Can you possibly find your picture in front of the cathedral in Santiago and repost it?🙂

Sometimes folks have given me special messages or intentions or small gifts to leave at Cruz de Ferro.

Only ever carried two things. My faith and a rock and that had nothing to do with good luck. Many years ago while dumping stuff at a council tip, I found a prayer card to St Joseph. I brought it home and did the novena on it and then threw it in a drawer as nothing came of the novena. 2018 back on the Camino, I fell into an ice cold river and had to be pulled out as I was unconcious. Off I went next day on my camino and thought nothing of it. This year has been dedicated by Pope Frances to St Joseph so I dug out the prayer card and there at the bottom it said that anyone completing this novena would never drown. So there it is, just my rock and my faith and thats all I need. My faith does of course include my rosary and my Miraculous medal

My daughter gave me this Lucky charm in 2005 and is traveling with me ever since.
I made a promise to take it with me all the time 😎

my little friend the scallop brass bell is always by me,
on my travel rucksack when on the Camino, then it goes with me on my day pack to work every day when I come home....

I carry my Rosary at all times, say it at every opportunity and wear my Miraculous Medal. Life is full of surprises. Faith is a certainty.

Struggling up Mostelares one day, I started to say the rosary. Finished 3 decades when a lady I guess about same age as me came up and I remembered her from just before Vianna. Talking to her, I forgot about the Hill and suddenly we were at the top. She walked on while I de layered and I never saw her again. A camino angel maybe. Halfway down the hill, I remembered I owed Our Lady a couple of decades so stopped at side of trail to complete my prayer. Small miracles do happen on the camino

Before my first Camino my brother gave me a St Christopher medal with a chain. While on my first Camino I had a shell added to it. On my second I added the Templar cross.3R9A1928 (2).JPG

Since my cancer diagnosis I have worn a necklace with a quote from the great Terry Pratchett's Granny Weatherwax. "I aten't dead yet."
There are many cancer survivors on the forum who have shared their stories. They give us future hope, whether we are ill or not. All the best to you.

After my wife, son and I announced we were going on the Camino, a dear friend was very concerned for us because on our last trip elsewhere one of us developed a dangerous leg condition (since healed). He went to a Catholic shrine, asked a lot of questions, and got us St. Christopher medals for us to take with us. The action was additionally appreciated since, though we are devoted Catholics, our friend is devoted to the Jewish faith. I will always treasure the medal.

In 2019 I decided I wanted to take with me a little bit of home (New Mexico), so contacted a small brewery in Santa Fe that had stopped using bottle tops of our state flag. They kindly sent me a handful when I explained I wanted (only) one to attach to my pack for my Camino Portugues. In this photo you can see the flattened bottle top and hanging below is a terra cotta angel I had from a walk in France. The angel immediately was lost on the plane trip to Spain (apparently she was called to fly back to heaven), but the token of New Mexico is waiting for my next pilgrimage.

My grandmother had a beautiful gold covered cross that she wore all her life (that I remember). I just recently found it while clearing out the family home. It needs a new neck chain which I will replace. My Belgium grandmother who was a devout Catholic and worked in a convent during her youth will be so happy when I take her with me on this journey.

I always put St. Anthony medal in my backpack. St. Anthony is the patron saint for lost and found.
Due to my back pain, I, many times, sent my backpack via carrier.
I never had misplaced my backpack and/or lost my way to destinations through my 3 times of camino, CF Camino, Portuguss Way, and Le Puy to Santiago. I am planning to walk Camino Norte next spring 2022, so I will bring him with me again.

Moorwalker -- keep at it! After my collision with thyroid cancer and subsequent treatment -- I walked Porto-Santiago in 2019 and bought a little silver shell on a chain at the cathedral's store. That hasn't left my neck since.

On my first Camino I bought small scallop shell earrings at the pilgrim shop in Carrion de los Condes, and have worn them on every Camino since. In 2018, I lost one at the albergue in Santa Catalina, when they fell out of my pocket in the dark. Crawling around looking under the bed with a flashlight only produced one. The other was nowhere to be found. When I got home and unpacked my backpack, there it was right at the bottom. They are definitely my lucky earrings, now in a safe place waiting to go on another Camino.

My wife bought me a silver scallop shell on a chain in SJPP when I left in 2012, it has rarely left my neck since. If I forget to put it back on after showering I am on edge for the day. 😊

My birthday always falls in the spring when I am walking the Camino. My son treated me to dinner and when we arrived in Santiago he purchased these lovely silver earrings for me. Every time I wear them I think of that special day.
