What do you know about this statue?

The attached photo was taken in 2016 in the main square of the large Monte do Gozo hostal/albergue. My googling is not the best, clearly, as I've not been able to find the name of the sculptor or when it was erected. Do you know? Any other information welcome e.g. if there was a model for the statue, what was her name?

Interesting. The style reminds me of the work from Miguel Couto. The artist who also made the statue at O Cebreiro.

The platted hair and the seated pose resemble the piece in O Cebreiro but the style is different. The website for the Benvido Monte de Gozo hostel shows three images of it on the page for La Plaza - one of the images has the artist's handprint and signature.

I have no idea but it is a beautiful piece of art. As my art teacher in college taught me (a class I took so I could pick up girls, but ended up learning lots about art). It doesn't really matter which impressionist it is, what matters is if you like it and it generates a reaction.

I don't know, but thanks for the thread that lead to answers! I will look for this statue if/when I ever return. I love this viewing angle and would like to see it IRL. For one thing, there are remarkably few images, silhouettes, or statues of female pilgrims (I love those that exist, and I note that there are some 3 or so that I can think of off hand on the CF). The iconic pilgrim remains male, as though there were not records of women on pilgrimage all the way back *at least* to Chaucer....

I'd like to see someone express in sculpture how very many *older* people are now on pilgrimage, and who are as robust and vital as the younger women and men generally depicted (though there are definitely many "middle aged" male pilgrims in representation).

True, and I welcome it for that reason.

But ... I can't help feeling that the head lets down the rest of the sculpture. Those eyebrows were stolen from Mr. Potatohead, and the hair from a Lego figurine. Sorry.

It's no Michelangelo, true. The hair is a bit lacking in detail and the face is expressionless, but the hands and feet are good. I've asked the sculptor about the date and if there was a model on his FB page.

I probably didn't walk through the grounds of the hostal/albergue in 2014 which would account for the fact that I didn't see the statue that year.

I see what you are saying about the smoothness… the “lack of detail” — but I note that there are no details anywhere else; the entire piece is extremely smooth. A decision of the sculptor for whatever reason… I am fairly neutral about the choice, but I think it would look strange to have very details brows and hair and have the rest remain so smooth.

I like the contemplative look on her face. It seems not that her feet ache, but that she has become *aware* of the work and wonder of the body that has carried her… It is not a moaning or suffering statue, and I like that about it too.

What I like about all the statues i this genre “pilgrim on the way” is that the people with the money have decided to make art about ordinary, nameless folk. When so many cities are over-populated by men on horses, I am struck by the valuation of the ordinary person in Iberia.

I didn't criticize the face and hair for lack of detail. I just think they're bad. The hands and legs look as though they might be warm, human. The face is alien.

Perhaps the model was Nikki Minaj.

There is detail in the cord around her neck, holding the scallop shell. My photo does not show the left ear very well, but it looks as though there is no detail there. But I didn't want to start a discussion about art. It's all subjective. I said "expressionless", Faye said "contemplative". You pays your money and you takes your choice.
