Hello-
My flight from the US is Friday; I arrive in Madrid on Saturday. I am fully vaccinated and ready to go. I have been reading pilgrims' updates and watching Ivar's video updates....
I am so excited but the fluid state of the virus is weighing on me.
I am not thinking I will cancel, but I'd love to interact via this forum with any of you who are also so near to leaving for their Camino. How are you feeling? etc...
(BTW, my plan is to begin walking from Burgos on July 18th)
Thanks in advance for your input.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
I am here reading posts and thinking if I should or not start my way next September. Originally I was planning to start walking April 2022 but so many things happening made me think to start in September.
The "fluid state of the virus "in weighing on me as well.
Please keep us posted what you find while on the camino. Your information will help me to decide.
Be Well and Buen Camino !
Marcel

As I said in some of my recent posts, I have pushed my Camino to the next year, but DW and I are poised to fly to BCN on 30 July.
Keeping our fingers crossed and saying lots of prayers that nothing will change it.
Yes we both are fully vaccinated

I would not be afraid to go now. Just take some basic precautions and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Go with the flow and do as the locals do. If they are masked, you mask-up.

FYI - The Spanish word for face mask is mascarilla. Hand sanitizer is desinfectante de manos - although someone else may have a more correct colloquial term. But I am certain about the term for face mask. Both are available in most all farmacias.

Remember to bring some masks and hand sanitizer with you. The masks may be needed once you enter any town, or cafe, shop, etc. Between towns, where no one is near you, no mask is needed. The hand sanitizer always comes in handy during your days' walking.

Even if you are vaccinated, there remains a slight risk. So, be prepared.

Yes, you can buy masks and sanitizer in Spain. But, I would prefer arriving with my preferred cotton, reusable washable masks (as they have served me well for the past 16 months and are very comfortable. And my little sanitizer bottle with the silicone strap attachment for a shoulder bag or my rucksack is very convenient. I can refill it when there.

Hope this helps.

Tom

Hello and have a great Camino. I hope to walk in September of this year. I have been watching the posts closely. Here are some of my thoughts:
- Be smart and where a mask when you feel at risk. It is good for you and them.
- Try to stay in places with people who are vaccinated. How do you know? Ask at check-in... what is the general age of your guests, how close are the beds, study the Camino guide, and maybe pay a bit more for places that fit your checklist etc.
- Use hand washing and sanitizer and don't touch your face.

I suspect you already know most of the list of 'do's and don'ts'.

My wish is that you will be fine, enjoy the walk, people, and country. This is your Camino... be smart and enjoy it.

Peace,

Jim

Totally agree with @t2andreo & @Jim ME
Even as those of us who are fully vaccinated - there are plenty of places, businesses, etc. that still require (or as some put it - 'strongly suggest') to wear a mask...and we all comply.
Use common sense and if in doubt - wear one! Surely nobody will deny you a service or an entry if you DO!

If anything - out of 'all of it' so to speak - the only thing that I am truly not looking forward to is to sit on the plane for almost 9 hours wearing one. Seems there is a lot of talk coming out from Air Industry that the requirement will be lifted in September, so who knows... if that does come true then it might make it easier for some folks (and it still does not stop you from wearing one - some folks from Asia been doing it for the last what? 10-15 years if not more)

You’ll be a little ahead of us. My wife and I are flying out to Madrid early on Tuesday. We’ll be in Burgos early Tuesday evening and on our way next morning to resume our interrupted 2020 Camino. Re feelings, we’re looking forward to leaving the UK for a while at least. We’re fully vaccinated; all the evidence suggests that we’re unlikely to get seriously ill if we are exposed to COVID and are unlikely to pass it on if we do, so we’re not worried for ourselves or on behalf of who we might meet en route. The sunny weather looks great, the gentle day to day walking from A to B, conversations with local people and other pilgrims are always a delight. We’re so looking forward to going and this time making it back to Santiago and hopefully on to finisterre. I’m particularly looking forward to seeing O cebreiro in the sunshine. Last time we were there it was covered in three feet of snow.

I'm in a similar boat, with a ticket to Spain for next week. But like others have said, as of now, I'm going to forge ahead but with caution and a Plan B, C, D, etc. Which mostly means I'm going to try to hold onto a very flexible attitude, and not expect that things will go totally according to plan (great if they do! But then again, things not going according to plan and how to deal with it has been one of the great lessons of previous Camino's). This time around, for me, there will be more pre-booking, more private rooms, along with mask wearing, sanitizing, etc. I do hope that all will be okay! Good luck to you and Buen Camino!

Lynne, Enjoy the Camino!!!!!

I am scheduled to leave for Spain in September (from NYC-USA). I am a bit tentative as well, but I'm also prepared to do whatever is necessary to stay safe (and protect others),

Keep us updated on your progress.

Hi Lynne!
I am flying to Madrid on the 30th of July, but I'm starting to walk from St Jean Pied de Port. I can imagine how excited you must be 'cause I am too! I'm also fully vaccinated, therefore not very worried about getting Covid. Anyways, I'm bringing masks and plenty of hand sanitizer.

Have a safe flight and good luck in your Camino!

We flew here from US on June 16 and walking various Caminos in Galicia and arrived back in Santiago today. There are decent numbers of pilgrims walking. Most Albergues, including Municipals, are open so there is no problem with anybody coming soon to walk

Hi all! I am here at moment about two weeks into the Norte. It’s feels fine. The locals are making up for lost time and packing out bars, restaurants, etc. It certainly feels a world away from this time last year when I was doing Frances! Despite the dropping of the requirement to wear face masks outside I would say In excess of 95% still wearing them in cities, towns and villages. Apart from that people are going about their business in a normal fashion.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

Sounds exciting. We are flying into Spain August 22nd so we'd be very interested on your experience between July 18th and August 22nd. We are fully vaccinated as well. We are watching the rising cases. Hope you can post and keep us informed. Steve

Lynn, thank you for opening up this threat. I am a fully vaccinated Canadian. I am due to leave for Spain the end of August. I feel about the same as you. I am watching carefully. I’d love to be in touch with you as you go. I am not sure how to do that as I don’t want to post my email here. I listen to Ivar amd appreciate his updates. There is another man on YouTube that is more pessimistic about the covid situation, I am trying to listen to both. Personally, as a vaccinated, cautious person, I am not afraid of my own health status. I am more concerned about trying to get out if things close down. I know France just issued a warning for not travelling to Spain. I think the walking and my own behaviour is pretty safe, alone and outside eating when possible…but if they lock down regions again…it may be a problem. I am trying to hold it all loosely, keeping in mind what the Spanish need from us as well. Do keep in touch.

Seems there is a lot of talk coming out from Air Industry that the requirement will be lifted in September, so who knows...

Which point prompts me wonder: I understand that -- by US Federal law -- masks are required to be worn on planes departing from US airports.... Does that extend to non-American airlines like TAP and Iberia?... Does the US Federal law requirement go away once that hypothetical TAP or Iberia non-American plane leaves American airspace?... What consequences if the TAP captain says, somewhere out over the Atlantic, "You may remove your masks?" Just curious....

I am due to fly from Northern Ireland to Santiago de Compostela on 24 July. Plan to start in O Cebreiro on 25 July. But I am watching the news closely to see if I can go. Wondering if there is any risk of Spain locking down again....

I had a short meet-up with a forum member yesterday who was driving through my town on the interstate, and when I expressed the same doubts that others have about walking with the new spike, he said — What makes you think that 2022 is going to be any better? Remember in 2020, we said we’d walk in 2021, and now we’re at that same point a year later. Hmmmm. He reminded me that with 3% of the world population vaccinated in the first year, this is going to be with us for a long long time, if not forever.

I’m not encouraging people to walk or not walk, but one thing that I hadn’t been factoring into my calculation of acceptable risk were the odds that we will be in a very similar situation next year, and the next. And meanwhile I feel like the wicked witch of the west watching the hourglass drain.

Very, very good point. That hour glass is what I have been talking about to people who say... You are going where? When? I keep saying in response... how long will we be held captive by the virus? If we are vaccinated and practice safe distancing etc., you have to ask if the risk is worth it. Sure the Delta variant is highly contagious, but if we don't try to get back to some normal now... then when? Will this Camino cost me more...sure, because I will be more Albergue/Hostal/Hotel selective. I will not do large community meals (which I will miss). But, I will enjoy the walk, the people I meet, and the kindness of the Spanish community. For family reasons I had to move from mid-August to mid-September. Unless there is a surprise, I will be going to Spain. My only remaining question... Camino de Madrid or CF to Leon, then Salvador to Primitivo. Hope to see you there.

I appreciate everyone's responses. They have helped me tremendously!

Today I thought about a lesson I experienced every day on the Camino: Trust that I will receive exactly what I need and not necessarily what I plan. So, I know people don't talk a lot about prayer, and I get it if it makes some of you uncomfortable, but I pray for guidance at times like this. It's simple: help me to see and feel the right thing to do.

I've been reading your posts today and have received encouraging texts from friends who get why I keep trying to get back to that path! Right now I feel peaceful about going. Tomorrow, if I am feeling too anxious (more than normal:)) or have a bad feeling in my gut, I will cancel. But as of now I still plan to move ahead with the plan.

I will post updates while I am there for those of you who are hoping to get a clearer picture of the current climate on the Way (and I do not mean the weather). It's the least I can do because many people have helped me on this forum over the years.

And, of course, if I cancel I will tell you that too! But I hope that doesn't happen!!
Thanks again all.
Lynne

As you watch the sands fall, here on Plague Island (UK) I watch the barometer rise

1626299463912.png
42.300 new cases yesterday - a lot of them Delta variant but "only" 49 deaths - each one a personal loss of course. So, not going anywhere soon.

Good luck to those venturing out though, just be careful what souvenirs you take home with you

Buen Camino a todos!

On a practical note, is there a particular kind of mask specified or recommended by the Spanish government, or may we wear whatever will cover our mouth and nose?

On average there are in the order of 1,640 deaths per day in the UK. (pre covid ONS stats) Whilst each of those 49 represents a personal loss it’s important to keep a sense of proportion. They do still represent those who die ‘with’ covid not ‘of’ covid.

My wife and I are also Canadian and hope to leave for Spain the first week of September. Both 'vaxxed". We were supposed to go a year ago, but the airline (and the world) cancelled on us, so we are hesitant to sound confident that it will work easily, but we sure want to make it work.

Right now the variants are all 'successfully controlled' with the vaccines at hand. We hope to travel in September before a variant comes along that is not suppressed by the vaccine induced antibodies. It sure could happen. And I agree with you that this is likely a disease that will be with us forever, in some form or another.

You make a good point.

My point was rather to highlight the daily infection rate surging at over 40,000 cases per day in the UK and rising, with the 20 - 39 yo age group leading the way (FIVE times higher than mine). Each with the potential to infect others - oh for the heady days of May when we only had 2000 a day!

So, would I want to travel to Spain and risk being a carrier (of a stronger variant)? Mmm . . .

Hoping to make 70 in a couple of months and on medication for a cardiovascular condition following a TIA so I'll err on the side of caution for the present and stay put.

I've walked into SdC six times so far and have resigned myself to the fact that it might never happen again, which is fine; I can live with that - so long as I actually get to live with that.

As I said, Buen Camino to all of those who do venture out - come home safely.

Crossing into Spain from SJPP is kind of a non event, there is a sign. I would be surprised to see someone there monitoring. Could someone walking or recently walked speak to this?

Hi... I am glad it did, but the credit should go to peregrina2000. She inspired my outflow of feelings. My dates have freed up, so I can leave either late August or first week of September from Boston. Still toying with Camino de Madrid or starting in Pamplona. Either way I will transition to San Salvador to Primitivo. I am liking what I am reading about those two. Have a great Camino and maybe out paths will cross if you on one of those routes.

I am flying from the US to Madrid on July 22nd.. I am solo and feeling a bit daunted by arriving without a solid plan.. I was thinking of doing part of the Camino but feeling overwhelmed about thoughts of heat and if they’re open alberges ..your not alone

Very True! I truely believe that fully vaccinated people who follow common sense guidelines, take precautions, like eating outdoors, wear masks when near someone else or indoors, not overnighting in common spaces, washing hands frequently, can stay reasonably safe on the Camino. Cape diem! It’s up to Spain now!

I plan on entering September 1st this year from USA. My Camino will be Primitivo this year. I to have been following all information on entering España. I will prepare August in the hopes all will be well. Buen Camino LynneR !!!!!

We too are leaving Sept 1

Luggage from SJPP to Roncevalles
I am here reading posts and thinking if I should or not start my way next September. Originally I was planning to start walking April 2022 but so many things happening made me think to start in September.
The "fluid state of the virus "in weighing on me as well.
Please keep us posted what you find while on the camino. Your information will help me to decide.
Be Well and Buen Camino !
Marcel
Update : A decision has been made and I just bought my ticket . Arriving Spain on April 15th 2022 and hope to start my camino on Sept 17th. April 2022 is too far !!! Better do it now !!!!

I'm flying Sept. 9. It's the hourglass that got to me, and the hope that things are improving as so many are getting vaccinated. I am walking the Levante to the VdlP to the Sanabres, and do not expect to meet many on the trail. I shall avoid albergues, except for once or twice, late in my walk, where there is nowhere else to stay at a reasonable walking distance. And Buen camino to all you other crazies. Vaya con dios.

Hello-
My flight from the US is Friday; I arrive in Madrid on Saturday.

Hi,

I too would like to do the Norte, tentative plans to start 01 September from Bilbao. Did not book my flight yet, watching the Covid situation. Live updates most helpful. Thank you.

I would love to talk to a Canadian but if someone else knows…when I arrive in Frankfurt then catch my flight into Spain do I need a pcr test, or am I considered in a transit zone. Do I need to pay attention to German requirements even though I am only in the airport?

I was told today by someone who lives in Frankfurt that people who transit at the airport remain in a transit zone and do not have to fulfill the requirements of someone who is staying in Germany. You might also check your tickets to see if your your planes land and take off in the same terminal, as this may avoid the need to go through customs, etc. But this is fairly simple information, which you could ask to the airline that you bought your tickets with.

well..... soon..... 50 days.....soon for me. The situation IS fluid but I am confident it WILL be a 'go'. I am currently 'in training' getting at least 4 'longer' walks in a week and upping the distances each week. I am in really good aerobic shape but walking is very different on the body than biking (my go-to). I am coming to terms with the fact that i will not be one to pull this off in the proverbial 34 days..... best, from TF in MN

Lynne
Dear Lynne,
Another few days have gone by…how r u feeling now?

Dear Lynne, thank you for your honesty. Last spring I pulled the plug on walking at the last minute. I rescheduled and went in the fall. I stumbled in Leon (not even in the Camino) and had to come home. Now, here we are. So much going on but this time I don’t feel quite the same as last spring. I am on schedule to leave Canada on April 2nd. I am okay. I feel like I need to remain open to not going, coming home early if necessary, in essence, I feel like I need to hold it all loosely, which was what I felt in the fall. It was actually a good posture for my Camino because, there are no guarantees. Did I miss when you are leaving? Feel free to message me if you need to flesh out any of this.
