I am considering a Madrid/San Salvador/Primitivo walk in late September. If anyone is walking the Madrid in August/September, I would appreciate postings on Accommodation along the Madrid route.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

Don’t know how current it is but the guide for route from cofrat of st James inLonfon worked well for me. It would be a good starting point.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Hi, amigo,

Álvaro Lazaga is walking the camino de Madrid backwards (on his way home to Benidorm from Santiago) and has spent one night in the forest, one night inside a little church, and one or two nights at friends’ houses. Albergues closed in most of the places except Puente Duero, Santervas (or whatever the name of the town is where Ponce de León was born) and Castromonte, I think.

You can see him here.

I suppose things could get better, but right now it looks like it could be tough. I do think he has passed by several hotel options, so you might be able to patch it together if you’re willing to do that.

It would be really great info. if I understood Spanish. Nice videos brought back a lot of memories.

Am currently considering completing my 2020 aborted CdeM (from Valdestillas) & the Salvador (and maybe the Primitivo) in early August. For the Madrid leg I'm not counting on any albergues being open, so will be splashing out on hotels/hostals/CR's in Simancas, Medina, Villalon and Sahagun.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.
Ok, I have gone back through his videos and will try to put this in order going north. Actually it looks like you will be fine.

Between Madrid and Vileguillo no albergues are open. (from memory, though, there is no shortage of private options — Tres Cantos, Colmenar, Cercedilla, Segovia….

Santa María Real there is a hotel

In Navas de Asunción there is a pilgrim albergue (closed) but also an albergue juvenil. It was full when he passed, but I don’t know if he could have stayed there if it had not been full with a youth group.

Coca - albergue closed but good bar (closed Tuesdays)

Vileguillo - albergue open

Alcazarén — albergue open

Valdestillas — bar open

PUente Duero — albergue open

Simancas — hotels, bar

Ciguñuela — albergue closed

Wamba — bar open

Peñaflor — albergue closed

Castromonte — albergue open

Medina del Ríoseco — hotels

Tamariz (a bit off camino) - albergue open with 1 bed!

Vilallón de Campo — albergue closed but I remember there is a hotel across the street from the albergue, so maybe it’s open

Santervás — albergue open

Re Villalon - when I was looking this morning there were 2 hotels on Booking.com.

Hotel Rural Venta de Alón is the place right across from the albergue. It was new when I walked in 2012. The hospitalero had made me a very nice lunch, and we went over to the hotel afterwards for coffee. He knew the owners, and they were very friendly and interested in the camino. We went to a “downtown” bar for tapas later that evening, and it is a really nice town with a good ambiente, IMO.

€2,-/day will present your project to thousands of visitors each day. All interested in the Camino de Santiago.

The Albergue there was one of the nicest I have stayed in.

Laurie, can I copy/post this on my Camino preparation page?

Wow this is outstanding! I had just about given up on walking the Madrid starting early September for fear of not finding places to stay that are open. This gives me a renewed interest. I was going to settle for Salvador to Primitivo, now I am back to Madrid, Salvador and Primitivo. Thanks so much and I will be checking back for the updated list. I will also share my experience if I do the Madrid portion so jpFlavin1 and other have current information.

BTW places I'd recommend from my 2020 aborted CdeM...Hostel la Pedriza in Manzanares, Posada Rural Pena Pintada in Cercedilla and Casa de la Paca in Coca.

I loved Hostel la Pedriza in Manzanares in 2019

My absolute favorite stay on the Madrid was a night up on a rocky promontory outside Manzanares, in an albergue attached to the Ermita Peña Sacra. Views in all directions, mostly over the Guadarrama mountains. Getting the key required waiting outside the priest’s house in town and hoping he would arrive, but I had met two peregrinos a few kms outside Manzanares (the only ones I would ever meet on this walk). They took charge of this and also brought up meal fixings. It was one of those really stand-out experiences, especially when night fell.

Unfortunately, the church and the town authorities got in a huge tiff and the church withdrew permisison for peregrinos to stay there. There were threats of a lawsuit, since a lot of public money had gone into rehabbing the church on condition that pilgrims could use it, but that never went anywhere as far as I can tell. Manzanares really needs an albergue — taking time to visit the castle would be so much easier if there were an albergue!

I know that Ray y Rosa have built a little pilgrim place out back of their home, and I also know pilgrims love it. It should be easy to visit the castle in town and then arrange to get to their place. Has anyone done that?

Hostel La Pedriza looks very nice but what is that pink concoction in the middle pic with the little toasts. Imma have to note that for my walk in (hopefully) September.

It was beetroot humus - yum yum. Followed by a rather nice homemade veggie burger.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
