I was just now checking in for a Delta Airlines flight to Madrid and the message below popped up on the screen. I was unable to confirm this information on Spanish government nor US government websites. So I am wondering if it is outdated information?

ADVISORY
Passengers to Spain from or through the United States must provide evidence of a negative result from a PCR test taken within 72 hours of arrival in either English or Spanish....

Well, Delta also provides this information, which, I believe, answers my question (the above info must be an error):

I just returned from a trip to Spain. The requirement is proof of vaccination and completing the travel document for Spain. When you will need the negative Covid test (can be antigen or PCR) is upon re-entry into the US.

@CaminoforLife: When did you travel to Spain? And I guess you travelled from the USA to Spain? If yes, proof of vaccination was a requirement for travellers to Spain but it has no longer been a requirement for some time and currently it isn't. At least not required by Spain. I don't know what US airlines require themselves.

The Spanish government's travel document needs to be completed by travellers from the USA but currently there is no longer an option in the online form for providing information about vaccination status for travellers from the USA.

I arrived in Spain on July 12 and arrived back in the US 3 days ago. The proof of vaccination was included in the travel document.

The proof of vaccination was included in the travel document.

It seems like you are saying that they ask the question if you are vaccinated or not, which is not the same as requiring proof of vaccination.

I did not intend for this to be a debate. I was merely stating what the requirements were for me when I traveled to Spain a few weeks ago.

After doing a small amount of research, I see that indeed, there was a change in requirements while I was already in Spain (July 17) which has lessened the required documentation. Here is a part of the current statement from the US Embassy and Consulate in Spain. I think the important piece to take from it is that conditions are changing regularly and anyone traveling should pay attention to daily alerts. Your airline will keep you notified of any requirements as they occur.

“There is no requirement to bring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test if you are traveling from the United States to Spain. However, this may change with short notice, so be sure to review this information as close as possible to your travel date.”

Thank you. That is exactly what I thought…until the alert about being tested “within 72 hours of arrival” threw me for a loop. I hope you had a great trip!

I truly did! Thank you. And no worries…I found travel to be much easier and pleasant than pre-Covid. Everyone is really trying to help each other along and sort it all out.

I wasn't debating you. Just trying to figure out what you meant by proof of vaccination. It wasn't clear to me that proof meant actual proof or just an answer to the question. Or if this was some agent (airline or immigration) asking for proof even though one wasn't officially required.

Madrid Airport do Covid testing, but their website said it takes at least 12 hours for PCR result. How is that going to work in time for my flight home to the US?

The CDC also accepts an antigen test, and results are available in about an hour. You can make a reservation for a test at

The topic of this thread is about travel from US to Spain. The requirements changed in June, and may change again. I’m going to close this thread since there are plenty of other threads talking about the current requirements.
