Camino Portugués

Time of past OR future Camino
Via Podiensis and Camino Frances 2023
Hello đź‘‹
We are planning on walking some of the Camino portugués from Porto. We are unlikely to complete the whole thing with our timetable.

which route would people that have walked or recommend? The costal or the interior?
Thanks in advance!

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

€149,-
I did the same as JohnLloyd - I cut in at Vila Do Conde and that made for a great experience. I really enjoyed walking the coast on that first day as apparently the first day out of Porto on the central route is not that great. In the future I hope to walk the entire coastal route but for my first Camino I enjoyed the central route and all the pilgrim sites along the way. I understand you see more resorts and coastal sites not necessarily historic pilgrim sites if you go the coastal route.

My wife and I like the coastal route, but can't compare it to the central since we didn't walk that.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.

I am on the Portugués da Costa at the moment. We started in Porto and it was a wonderful walk along the coast!

However, since we joined the Central in Redondela it is very difficult to find beds (there are 4 of us). Albergues, guest houses and hotels are not allowed to use all beds. No doubt things will be easier in a couple of weeks, when the Spanish go back to work!

You are starting in the peak of the European holiday season. Everything shuts down so they can take a break, competition for beds will be an issue.
We just returned from a week in France and found the venues and hotels packed, despite Covid restrictions. Lot of pent-up "cabin fever" in Europe that needs to be released and August is the time for doing that.

Thank you! We just finished the Frances and noticed how much busier it was at the end.

The coastal route is lovely, but I felt my Portuguese Camino truly started when I cut inland at Vila do Conde.
John can I ask what your route was. My husband and I are starting from Porto on Sept 5 and are thinking of walking the coast on the first day then cut in at Vila do Conde, it is a bit confusing trying to plan our stopping points given the number if routes.

Hello.
I'm planing to walk fra Lisbon to Santiago in September. Never walked from Portugal before. I'm a worried about the covid situation. Does it affect your camino? is it hard to find accommodation on the portugues route

Best regards, peregrina from Denmark

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Hi Laura

This may be too late but we caught the metro to Villa de Pinheiro to start our inland walk to SdC.

The following link may be of helpful... https://www.longdistancepaths.eu/camino/en/index.php?start=2224&kms=45&routenr=4&B1=Startkms

Even starting at VdP the first day was not great but it soon became enjoyable as we walked further north.

We had already walked from SJPdP to Estella in Spain and had also walked 4 weeks in France from Le Puy and we found ourselves comparing the inland route with these experiences. After reaching SdC we agreed all three caminos we completely different and as such all three were equally enjoyable and worth doing.

Whether you do the coastal or the inland, I'm sure your camino will be worth it.

Enjoy!

We walked from Porto on the coastal route and the biggest issue was that a lot of the albergues in Portugal were closed so we had to book other hostels or hotels. We had to book days in advance in august since it was also tourist season. Since albergues are closed, you might need to book ahead even after the high tourist season.

But other than that, as long as you have your Covid vaccination, things were great! Some places required our Covid passports to stay or eat inside.

How does an American get a COVID passport? I was going to walk from Porto to Santiago and then take a train back to Porto--if I have proof of vaccination will I have to take Covid tests to re-enter Portugal? Thank you!

Our friend from the US just had a paper copy of his vaccination dates, and that worked fine. At this point, I don’t think you need proof of vaccination to get into Portugal from Spain, but some albergues and hotels require it.

Why? What was different about the camino experience before then?
For me (not speaking for John) but the coastal route felt more generally touristy with resorts etc. Churches and other more spiritual artifacts were not as close to the route... this is not a criticism, it was just different and once I went inland I felt more of a presence of the spirituality of the Camino.

That's about the size of it for me too.

The coastal section of the Porto route was just a long walk along the beach.

It didn't really feel like a Camino until after Vila do Conde.

Thank you! Lots of learning to do since this will be our first Camino
