I speak reasonable Spanish which was fortunate as the two older gentlemen ‘on shift’ when I picked up a credencial a few years ago spoke no English. In any case it was clear that I wasn’t there by accident and an enjoyable half-hour passed before I left with a credential, several leaflets and good wishes.
They’re very helpful.

You can buy a small hand-held translator that you speak English into and it playback in Spanish and vis-a-versa. Assuming you would want something like this.

In a jam? Any sheet of paper, fold in fourths, put your name, date, and starting location. Get your starting stamp and initial. A sheet of stationary from your hotel/alburge in Madrid would be cool. What the heck, draw a pretty picture. You now have a unique memory. Get a more typical passport on your way.

Down bag (90/10 duvet) of 700 fills with 180 g (6.34 ounces) of filling. Mummy-shaped structure, ideal when you are looking for lightness with great heating performance.

Hmm, I was understanding that to get a compestella it must be an official credential stamped from the church. I could be mistaken. With the covid who knows. I commented on another and asked the question to a vetern volunteer. I'll correct my post if necessary.

If you have a smartphone, download the SayHi App. I have an Iphone and I has to say, it is brilliant.

You say a sentence in English and it will translate and repeats the sentence in Spanish. Then the repondent says a sentence in Spanish and it translates and repeats the sentence in English for you.

I believe the SayHi app is also available for android smartphones.

And it's free ! but you do need to be connected to the Internet. Buying a local sim card would be easy in Madrid.

Being imprisoned here in Australia, as most of us are, I use it to cheat a little on my Duolingo lesssons sometimes  .

It also helps me check what Spanish I might use when I have imaginary conversations with myself while pretending to be prancing along the Via del Plata, while having a real cafe con leche, at home, for zero euros. (A great saving, I must say)

Such an app will be of valuable assistance to you to communicate with non-English speakers as you do your real Camino.

Buen Camino!

Yes, it must form part of the document you present in SdC, but in the same way that you can add blank paper to extend a credencial which is full, there’s no reason why you couldn’t start by using the back of your gas bill until you get hold of an authentic credencial. It’s only the last 100km which the office is interested in after all.

If you click on this link and let it open on Google maps then you will have lines that show up when you use G Maps that show you where the Camino's are and where you are in relationship with the Camino. The file is the CNIG set of maps for pilgrims. It also shows many albergues. This file is very useful but unfortunately with G Maps you can't follow it within the app, although other mapping tools allow this.

That map looks familiar. :)

If you use it and find that any of the recommended albergues/bars/restaurants has closed permanently, let me know and I'll remove it from the map. Unfortunately, I expect there may be a number like that as we emerge from the pandemic.
