Coastal busy in August?

Like many others, we have had to postpone our 2020 and now 2021 Caminos, as it looks like we won't be able to leave Australia until 2022, and then probably only after July 2022. Our intention in 2020 was to walk from Lisbon to SdC, including walking the Coastal from Porto.

So I thought I might just transpose my planning for 2020 into 2022, but starting at a later date. It looks like we might start walking from Porto on 25 August.

I am a little worried that accommodation might be limited at that time of the year, and I should probably consider walking the Central instead.

We're open to all types of accommodation, not only albergues, but also hotels.

I must also add that we are slow walkers (for a number of reasons), and my planning is for us to walk from Porto to SdC in about 20 days.

I would be grateful for any comment, recommendation, suggestion, advice from the veterans of this forum.

Obrigado, gracias, thank you!

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
My experience in 2017 during the summer/holiday season was lots of people along the coast, some were day trippers and the bars and restaurants were packed, but I never found a problem finding a place to spend the night
My wife and I walked the coastal in August 2018 and experienced the same. We booked a couple of days ahead to make sure we had accommodations. Looking on the bright side, we encountered no rain at all during our Camino, which seemed to represent a good tradeoff for the additional crowds.

Hi, I also think the Coastal will be very busy in August. I hate to suggest it, but, as you know your pace by now, it may be better to just book the whole lot before you leave Oz, and enjoy the walk. Lots of private albergues on Gronze and booking.com to start browsing. I am already booking places on the CF for a group in September 2022. I reckon next year is going to be very busy on all the main routes.

Good day to you

Hopefully the days will pass by quickly so that your setting out from Lisbon and then Oporto in 2022 quickly comes along.

Have just finished Oporto to SdC, first via the coast path and the Variant Espiritual and then going back and walking the 'usual' route via Caldes de Rei.

Was it busy, busy ? Not really busy, until after leaving Vigo, though there were still no problems finding accommodation.

Nothing was booked ahead, apart from the night at the Albergue in Oporto. I know that there are a fair number of places that do not offer themselves via the main sites - ie Booking.com, so if making on-line reservations suggest that there is a need to 'cast the net wide'.

If walking the coastal route up from Oporto, after leaving Pontevedra the Variant Espiritual is a beautiful option, though not a walk for the unfit.

None of the municipal albergue in Portugal were open when I walked, though I suspect that by next year they will be open once again.

I'm also wondering the same. It's my first Camino and will be starting on the 20th from A Guarda.

Hoping that the current situation with covid hasn't limited accommodation even more so. Also - if anyone has any insight onto how busy trails have been recently/ this year?

Any insight regarding places to stay/ safety is much appreciated :)

It depends on how far you will follow the coast.
the northern part of Portugal is not that busy although there is some
tourism.
accomodation in Porto is to be adviced booking on beforehand.
then you will encounter places like Matosinhos Vila do Conde , Esposrnde , qViana do Castelo Vila Praia de Âncora and Caminha. There are beaches and so there is some tourism but you will find your place anyway.
Also the Galicean coast in the south is quiet .
Aguarda, Oia , Baoina, and Vigo the same From Redondela you will meet the flow of the central route up to Santiago and keep in mind that the holiday month in Spain is August so it will be busier upthere.
lots of Spaniards walk the last 100 kms (a Compostela cerificate is good for their CV)

I walked from Baiona to SdC at the end of July. Cannot comment on the accommodation as I prebooked everything, but the trails were almost empty. Hardly saw anyone the first 2 days, then just a few groups later on, definitely not crowds. But I am also not an early riser, did not set foot on trail before 11ish😊, so it's possible that the crowds choose the early morning 😁

Yes i think pre-booking is the way to go! trying to do so now :) Did you feel safe overall as a solo-female on the trail? I’m more of an early riser myself so hoping to meet some walking buddies on the way

Honestly, I was slightly terrified when I realized that there was a lot of forest walking and I was all alone. Not because there was a real danger or something, it's just the realization that was scary😁. But I actually enjoyed walking alone in the forest more than anything.

We've just finished the coastal route from Porto and I can tell you that it is pretty quiet with pilgrim traffic as far as Redondela but you pas through a lot of coastal resort towns with a lot of holiday makers so you will probably need to book your accomodation ahead. Buen camino
