Planning to walk the Camino Portugues beginning in mid-September. Wondering if Canadian Provincial Vaccine records are sufficient and recognized in Portugal and Spain as valid proof of vacination? Anyone run into difficulties with entry?

Secondly for those walking the coastal route, did you come across any closures of facilites, restaurants, cafes etc along the coastal route?

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
Doing the same walk as you at approximately the same time. This is the golden question. We don't really have a choice except for our paper certificates unless the government gets their act together in time with the announced international certificate.

There is another thread by a Canadian who crossed with no difficulty, they accepted his paper certificate.

Fellow Canadians, make sure you upload the Spanish health app for entry into Spain, also it is necessary if you get sick alone the way. SpTH is what it looks like in App Store. You will out the form with the app and 24 hours before you leave Canada you finish uploading vaccine info, health information and they issue a QR code for entry into Spain.

Get a spanish phone number with Airalo. eSim, so no physical SIM card. Easy to use app to add more funds if needed.

Isn't that just for entry by plane. Does it also apply to those walking over the border as well?

The obligation to fill in the Spanish SpTH form - either online or through the app - does not apply to those who cross the land border from France to Spain and it does not apply to those who cross the land border from Portugal to Spain.

Only those who reach Spain by plane or cruise ship must fill in the form and obtain the SpTH QR code.

I'm not sure that the SpTH app is a "must have" actually.

Yes, that is what I thought.

Additionally from what I have read on the webpages, they are having troubles with that app.

Thanks for the clarification!

Oh yes, I remember that some people were advised to fill in the SpTH form on the web because there was a problem with completing the form in the app.

I am quite familiar with the form on the web and I've now downloaded the app and had a look at it. I cannot see that it is of much use other than for filling in the application form and for displaying the SpTH QR code when you have to show it at the airport of arrival in Spain. But since you always receive the QR code by email, whether you applied on the web or in the app, you can always display the code from your mailbox.

There are a number of links in the app where you can read further information on Spanish government websites. I don't see that the app is of any use once you've left your airport in Spain. Am I missing something?

I don't think so. I am flying in and out of Portugal so not necessary for me. I was just checking it out, in case it was relevant for me.

Technical backpack for day trips with backpack cover and internal compartment for the hydration bladder. Ideal daypack for excursions where we need a medium capacity backpack. The back with Air Flow System creates large air channels that will keep our back as cool as possible.

Appreciate your input! I highly doubt we'll have Canadian Vaccine Passports by mid-September, these things never happen but perhaps they will move quickly especially with a federal election looming! I'm hoping that with printouts combined with our Canadian Passport we won't run into any difficulties. Appreciate the tip on the Sp TH form and the app. We too will arrive and depart from Lisbon and cross into Spain by foot as we walk along the coastal route.

We will be going to Seville from Santiago and possibly taking a flight within Spain to get to Seville, we will need to understand if we would have to complete this form or even an additional Covid test in Santiago prior to flying out the next day after arriving in Santiago.

Travel has become very complicated. We try to anticipate in advance potential issues we could run into as we make a final decision on whether to go in Sept. or delay until 2022 even though not much may be different!

I recently flew from Ottawa to Vancouver carrying just a photo copy of the receipts on my iphone. No one even asked to see it. I can't speak to international flights, though.

The official public health statement is still in effect in Canada: “The Public Health Agency of Canada is continuing to advise travellers to avoid non-essential travel outside of Canada.” If that travel advice to avoid non-essential travel is finally lifted (maybe September 7th) and we get the Canadian Vaccine Passport by early fall (late September) travelling might be possible and we could then get travel insurance. The only thing hanging over our heads is the possibility of another variant that the vaccination is ineffective against. There are too many unsettling questions so my husband and I decided to postpone our fall Camino until spring. We are 75 and 82 and have our fingers crossed that we will still be healthy enough to do it. It will be our third Camino. 😞

Any idea if the Spanish QR registration/ code has an expiry? If one walks across the border but then continues to stay and travel within Spain doesn’t one need the QRcode for entry to some places?

The Spanish SpTH QR is only useful for arrival in a Spanish airport (or seaport). It is only valid for the international flight that you had applied for.

The Spanish SpTH QR code is not compatible with the EU digital certificate QR system. These EU compatible certificates are what people in Galicia use if or when they are needed for access to restaurants and bars. The system of controlling access to bars and restaurants has been suspended for legal/constitutional reasons and for the time being.

Currently, it is not possible in Spain to convert non-EU vaccination cards to the EU QR system, unless you are a resident in Spain.

You can get travel insurance right now. Alberta Blue Cross offers it as well as CAA according to others. A few insurance companies have decided that they won't wait for the "non-essential" to be lifted.

Ok got it and that’s good. Hoping that the situation will be ok in November. Thanks!

Thank you for reminding people that when a travel advisory is in effect, insurance can be void for travel!!

It's not a small consideration and your wisdom is appreciated! My entire winter plan -- that combines a new camino (Madrid) with a double repeat of chunks of the CP along with work in Granada is contingent on the insurance (and on not being disciplined by my employer who has had a travel ban for work and a ban on the use of our insurance since March 2020).

PHAC does not have independent ability to enact legislation necessary for COV passports, so at minimum it will be Sept 21 before that can be enacted. My guess is that people at PHAC and at Immigration Canada are working on the pragmatics now, and that we will hear more about enactment and date of rollout after the election. And my read on the temperature of the nation is that nobody except provincial players is against vaccine passports. Certainly the great bulk of the citizenry is hoping for them as a reward for our current immunity.

I am wishing you continued health, easy access to insurance, and a fantastic third camino come spring.

Be attentive to the clauses in your insurance, conditional on our national travel advisories, that @Judy's Way indicates above.

Can't speak to the current state of affairs on the ground, but you should let the CP thread know, and let people know which route you intend to take. If you are on FB, there is a Camino Portuguese group for women. I forget exactly what it is called. Could be very useful to you!

Interesting the Canadian government is saying “advising not to travel”, BCAA and my extended health cover unless the government says, “Do not travel”. They see it as an advisory of caution. Both insurances will cover.

We contacted our usual travel insurance company (Johnson/MEDOC) today. They will cover only health-related issues like COVID but no longer cover cancellations of flights due to illness. In March, 2020 we had to cancel our Air Canada flight because Canadians were advised not to travel because of COVID. Air Canada would not refund us the $700 paid, but we were covered by our travel insurance company. They no longer cover the cost of flights cancelled for health reasons, just medical costs. It’s good to know.

We have printed, and laminated, our Ontario Vaccine certificates. Passport sized. Done at Staples store. About $15CDN total for both of us.

A friend of mine here in British Columbia, an emergency room physician who also has been working on the vaccination initiative, sent me this information. It may be helpful for BC residents who plan to travel this fall:

I alread have print a copy of my vaccination from BC healthgateway.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.
As health is a provincial jurisdiction and the government of Canada has not yet issued a travel passport, my B.C. issued card is what I am carrying. Thanks to this post I am registering online for validation. I leave for Spain in Wednesday. I hope this suffices. I have done so much research and yet, this curve ball has now come my way. Welcome to the Camino Curveball club! Buen Camino.

We have something similar to BC at myhealth.alberta.ca. There is a record of all immunizations including Covid vaccines which can be accessed and printed out in a report form. I will take my original copies as well as the report. That should suffice.

This does take some time to set up as one has to ask for a security code to get into your records so can't be done quickly for those that are leaving the country soon.

I booked a ticket with KLM and asked them. They told me that the slips we get with out vaccination in Canada are valid proof. I hope the information is correct.

If you’re flying into Paris, you need to apply for a French health pass. If you search that in this forum, it will give you the link. This application is approved within a few short days and is recognized in all EU- Shengan countries.

Lucky BC’ers, we Ontarians have 2 pieces of paper (1/vaccine dose) with all the info but nowhere does it show “Canada”. still no vaccination card or travel passports 🤦‍♀️
Mine has "Ontario" displayed in large, bold letters at the top. That should suffice, no?

My Ontario vaccination receipt was accepted for the French health pass so they recognize it. That took 8 days to get.
