So i started out on the madrid route at 6:00 today, got to tres cantos around noon. got my credentials stamped but had to fork 50 euros on a hotel room. started emailing ahead to places in manzanares and cercedilla but as i feared all the cheap hostels are booked. so i cried a bunch (not really, more just complained to myself) and got some sleep. i realized ok, what i like about this, walking, what i don’t like, stressing out competing with other travelers and holidays for places to stay that are cheap. solution: start walking at 3:00 am and double my distance so when i get twice as far i have the allowance to throw on a hotel room and i don’t have to scrape lists on the app or gronze.com. so anyways we will see how that goes. i feel more confident just eye balling hotels when i reach a town rather then looking for the “cool” hostel to stay at that is more then likely already booked up.

Ideal sleeping bag liner whether we want to add a thermal plus to our bag, or if we want to use it alone to sleep in shelters or hostels. Thanks to its mummy shape, it adapts perfectly to our body.

Several options in Cercedilla - but I doubt you’ll be ‘doubling the distance of the usual leg out of there.

Options are then fewer until Medina de Rioseco and thereafter OK.

I’d be interested in your view as to whether you’re competing for accomodation with others walking the Camino, or just with peak Spanish holiday time?

sup henry,

i don’t think it really matters exactly who i am competing with, i think the point is by doubling my distance i increase my allowance to where i can stay thereby allowing me to fork on a hotel room for the evening.

in all reality i am not doing this to make friends. this is my heroes journey abyss to better look within myself. chasing the “experience” seems to be losing sight of the point as it is defined per me.

namaste 🙏

Sorry - you missed my point - I’m interested in why it’s so busy - are there a significant number walking the Camino de Madrid?

I don’t recall there being any ‘affordable’ options in Tres Cantos as it’s basically a planned technology suburb of Madrid. It gets much more rural from there.

I suppose doubling your distance halves your nights.

Good luck.

You are missing the point of walking the Camino. It is not supposed be an experience in travel torture and a quest for the next place to spend the night, it is a spiritual endeavor.
weird, i came to that conclusion in my original post, almost like you didn’t finish reading before posting or something…

for safety sake may push back to 6:00 again. rolling my ankle in the dark is probably a legit thing that could happen. it seems to take 5-6 hrs to push 25 clicks with my load so i can just re up on water when i reach a mid point and that should align me to reaching destination by evening. plus i noticed people in spain don’t eat dinner until after 8:00 so no point in getting somewhere too early.

Could you buy a small tent and a mat? Maybe you could use that some nights? I have sometimes slept in church porches. Just a suggestion.

Starting at 3am seems a bit extreme to me! 😁 Maybe half an hour before sunrise would be more manageable? That’s what I do when it’s really hot (my first week from Pamplona, temperature was 38 /39 deg. - in June!).
i know some people do like to walk at night, in which case ignore me 🙂

i think you are right. i am going to start at 6 and use my halfway location to re up on water and charge my electronics. (i have a battery for this). as long as i am cycling water the heat does not bug me so doing a second push seems ok. will test tomorrow.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

6 is good! 👍 And if you are leaving from a big town/city, you can even try 5.30 as there usually are street lights for quite a long way. Doesn’t work for small villages though 😉
Buen camino 🙂

I know the feeling and shock. I got the last available room in town one afternoon. A suite at 90€. Nice place but the bed wasn't worth it. I think I got full value though when considering all that I ate at the very fancy breakfast buffet.

Ooh yes, that's a wonderful stop and the room really super - and the bathroom quite luxurious. :)

I finished the Madrid last week and didn't see any others walking the Camino. So reckon it must be a combination of many places are still shut + holiday-makers.

Great strategy. I can't think of anything worse than being pressured into early starts or very long days just to try to compete for the cheapest beds. That competitive element, against other pilgrims, would spoil it for me. The competition I want is to test myself physically against the path, but to mentally have the burden of chasing a cheap sleep removed.

When we walked this two years ago, we had the benefit of a walker three days ahead of us who advised of albergues along the way available and desirable. This gave us peace of mind and worked well, even though we sometimes pushed on. There was a walker three days behind us and we provided the same service. I wish all peregrinos would use Ivar to provide this service.

By the way...Camino Madrid ranks among our all-time favorites. Reason: the villagers. We often played the poor peregrino act, sitting in the main plaza moaning and looking utterly miserable, which wasn't always an act. On every occasion, someone would come up to us and offer to help. We got some incredible meals off hours and some unforgettable accommodations. Our all-time favorite memory was in Hornillos de Penaflor where seemingly the entire population embraced us, made sure we were comfortable then invited us to a local fiesta that evening.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Hi,
Everyone's Camino is their own. That is what makes it amazing. On my first Camino I had to keep telling myself this is not a race. And after two caminos I wish I had slowed down even more and enjoyed the experience. Keep good notes about your experiences.
I also like to eyeball a hostel or alburgue before committing to a RSVP. I don't want to have to be somewhere on a schedule. So I kept my housing options open. After two caminos I can say that i never had a real problem finding a place to stay. Yes sometimes I had to try a couple places, but it always worked out. I never understood people stressing out about the next place to stay. I seemed to place unnecessary stress on what is supposed to be an enjoyable pilgrimage. Not saying that is for everyone, it was just my way of doing things. Best of luck.

if anyone else is planning two stages in one day pls bring water and sip it. also take breaks to refresh your body and muscles. lunch is a must!

I read and understood your message 😉. I think the shortage of beds is 1. Lots of summer Spanish walkers + pilgrims who didn’t get to walk 2020 + reduced beds at each albergue in order to meet the new COVID sanitary restrictions. I would be very disappointed to face what you have encountered. Did you consider jumping on a bus or train and heading to a less popular Camino? Others here like @peregrina2000 would be able to help in that respect (eg. Another Camino to walk). Do take care, stay safe and keep us updated 👣👣👣

I think that he's already on a less popular route! I think that @Calisteve has the reason why there is a lack of accommodations.

Just wondering if you checked up to see the situation regarding albergues and hotels before you began your camino? I see you referenced Gronze in a comment. Gronze seems to do a very good job of keeping us up to date on openings/closings. I am not sure if you did look at this why you would be stressing over the pricing when you can see virtually all the municipals and donativos are closed at this time. I will be walking the VDLP and similar to the Camino Madrid there are much fewer options. Fortunately there are many more affordable options open at this time. If things changed dramatically I would probably switch caminos as I am a budget pilgrim also and would find staying in hotels most nights a strain on my wallet and also not the way I enjoy doing my caminos.

Thank you, in Gronze we update the information in a maximum time of 24 hours after we have knowledge. If the pilgrims tell us, everything is easier and better updated.

Muchas, muchas gracias.

(Sorry, Paul, for hijacking your thread. Back to the camino. You will not regret the two nights in Segovia. A wonderful place. And the last big place in a long while.

Beautiful pictures of the Fonfría pass, @paulgeis Two nights in Segovia is an excellent idea! One of my most vivid memories of Segovia is the beauty of the aqueduct illuminated at night. You can stay up late to enjoy it, since you won’t be going anywhere tomorrow. :) You will have walked a long hard stage, but I hope the nap gives you a second wind.

Buen camino!

found a decathlon city here. there is also an outdoors store down from where i am staying. i am deadset on a pop up tent like the movie congo so if i have to order from decathlon and stay here longer i will lol…

i went ahead and purchased a pop up tent, 2 people (so i can put my packs inside) on amazon. i had to use a vpn on my phone to trick amazon into letting me buy from a spanish seller but use my prime account. shipping it to my hostal and will arrive wednesday. i booked through wednesday and will stay in segovia while i wait for the tent. once i get this tent i will be equipped to stay the night in the wilderness and can save euro’s in the long run by staying in hostels/hostals occasionally to shower and charge electronics/battery.

I did wonder what that other black, seemingly ‘extra‘, pack was (lying beside the main pack).
I wondered if it was a front, balancing, pack, rather like the one that @Kanga uses …?

So excited that you are there… Most structurally intact remaining aqueduct of the Roman Empire… the Alcazar Segovia, the last Gothic style church built in Europe, and the *castle*.

PLease tell us if it’s every bit as wonderful as I’ve seen in photos. Planning/hoping that I will be there Jan 3/4… maybe 5 (this is all weather dependent). I’ll take any food recommendations, and accommodation thoughts.

Wow, all crédit to you Paul. Bravo. You’ve been so resilient and adaptable. Who would have thought you’d have trouble finding a bed on Camino de Madrid!. When we walked this way in September 2018 we saw very few people. Although there were towns with not too many options, there were not many pilgrims so we had no trouble in that regard. We loved this ‘remote’ Camino. Travel well. Buen Camino.

Thank you so much for all the kind words!

I met a spanish guy on my way out of the mountains. I walked around with him a bit and he pointed out things like the sleeping woman which I would have missed.

Later I switched over to a vodafone pay as you go sim. Wow, american providers like verizon rip us off! Anyways my mms was not working but I figured it out, the poor girls at the vodafone store tried copying the “apn” settings for cellular/mobile data to the apn settings for mms. i ended up looking up the vodafone documentation and verifying it with a site that lists apn settings for international providers. I will never be able to escape doing IT work, even in other countries, 😂

this statue made me 😂

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.
not much to recommend on food, i always go to the grocery store, buy a loaf of bread, deli meats, fruit and water. i have gotten used to eating like that.
That’s also a good strategy for covid times. I plan to eat outside or in my room on my hoped-for camino in a few weeks. But for anyone like @Faye Walker who does want a restaurant recommendation, I can heartily recommend this sephardic restaurant, El Fogón Sefardí. As I looked for the restaurant information, I saw that this place also has a hotel connected in some way. Looks nice but too high end for the average pilgrim budget, I think.

Segovia’s culinary fame, though, is usually attached to roast suckling pig. Mesón de Cándido is the famous place. Not really my cup of tea anymore, but I did eat there in the 70s, and it is still going strong.

I remember having a day in Segovia once in 1994 and following the recommendations of a newspaper article I had read a few years earlier. Amazingly enough, that article, which pre-dates their online service, is available in the archives. No pictures, though, unfortunately.
LOTS of Romanesque churches to visit, though I am not sure if you are a fan of that type or architecture. But hey, with four or five more days as you wait for your tent, this might keep you occupied and engaged with the city!

And @paulgeis I echo the sentiment that has been expressed several times in this thread — keep those photos coming!

If @mspath suggests anything, the recommendation comes with serious credibility. And this looks fantastic!

Looking for more information about the Iglesia de la Vera Cruz, I found these two useful pages:

With a few days in Segovia you could visit some beautiful sacred spaces.

I am really enamored by the patterns on the sides of the buildings like: beautiful symmetry merged with organic rounded shapes and corners deriving geometrical context…

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
If you want a big meal of roast sucking pig or beef, and the beans and vegetables that accompany them, etc., Asador Maribel, on the uphill side of the aqueduct at Av. Padre Claret, 16, has great food, and the outdoor seating has wonderful views.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
it is very awesome here! i am staying to wednesday now because i had to order a tent. not much to recommend on food, i always go to the grocery store, buy a loaf of bread, deli meats, fruit and water. i have gotten used to eating like that.
If you do decide to splurge on food ... Restaurante Jose Maria for some cochinillo. There were also some very large white beans that I had in a soup that were local to Seqovia. Lastly, I stopped in a bar a few doors down from Jose Maria that had great free tapas with a copa.

Anyways my mms was not working but I figured it out, the poor girls at the vodafone store tried copying the “apn” settings for cellular/mobile data to the apn settings for mms. i ended up looking up the vodafone documentation and verifying it with a site that lists apn settings for international providers. I will never be able to escape doing IT work, even in other countries, 😂

i finally understand this book… took 2 years of studying hermeticism, gnosticism, kabalah, vedism, thelema, abandoning everything i had in the united states and running off to europe with no plan except to follow my heart. the camino for me is the abyss of my heroes journey…

Looks like you have plenty of varietals to experiment with

Not to get into a heated bean dispute, 🤣 but I HATE lima beans and love the category that wikipedia classifies as Navy Beans. I would say that those beans are closest to the alubias or judías blancas that you are likely to find in Spain, but others may be more expert than I.

And there are many towns on different caminos with their own special beans, like Lourenzá on the Norte, Puebla de Sanabria on the Sanabrés, and several towns in Asturias with their own special white beans. In fact, Lourenzá even has a bean museum!

And now I truly apologize for continuing to take poor @paulgeis’s wonderful live thread down the bean rabbit hole.

First, congratulations to Paul, for adroit problem solving. Well done!

Next, thank you for the wonderful photos. Keep ‘em coming! I think I would like to walk the Camino Madrid … someday. However, I clearly need to visit Segovia, one way or another.

This is a delicious and super simple recipe. It looks like what you had at the fancy dinner, minus the jumbo beans. Canned butter beans that you can buy at any US grocery store work just fine. It’s definitely become a favorite. (I have always used a bit of onion in place of the shallot and smoked, Spanish-style paprika.)

I can't wait to try this dip recipe! I love dips, I love simple (read lazy), and I love most beans!
I occasionally enjoy going down those rabbit holes...a few of you know that about me.😉

A sleeping pad is as important, because you can always use a church porch in a pinch for shelter.
As someone who has bedded down in a church porch on bare flagstones in a light sleeping bag I would say a mat is important, I managed without that night but had a broken night's sleep. The sound of a nearby bar opening early was music to my ears, 3 cafe con lechas later I hit the road/way with a spring in my step😘

Buen camino, peregrino!

Spoiler alert @paulgeis - if you don't know! At Coca I almost don't want to mention .... the very extraordinary castle there that I was totally not expecting. Except to warn you, in case you did not know, so you allow yourself some extra time. And some good picture for us please.
