Wanderingfriend,
It is good to learn that you have now arrived in Logrono. Where are you staying? The city has many good places to eat.

Will you be staying tomorrow also or moving on? When leaving head for the Parque de la Grajera. Hopefully la Cabana del Tio Juarvi, a simple cafe/resto will be open for a lakeside drink or second breakfast on your way to Navarette; the camino passes the door.

Please contunue to write when you can; current info is especially needed by all who will soon be walking.

Carpe diem and Buen camino.

It is so strange, I arrived in Logrono this afternoon and went to the square by the big church, I didn’t see one person who
looked like a pilgrim. So strange. Am I out here all by myself?
Yes, cities are inhabited by city people - very difficult to spot another pilgrim - so once you've done the touristy stuff it's great to get out of them. Then you'll meet the other pilgrims, no problem. Buen Camino, I enjoy the walk out of Logrono, it's really nice.

Is the way out well marked? Kinda nervous about this.
If the sun’s on your back in the morning, you’re going the right way.

yes, it’s sufficiently well- marked, although in any urban area it pays to keep your eyes open. Once you’re out of town it’s more straightforward. I’m a little surprised it’s not a simple matter of ‘follow the rucksack in front’ in Logroño at this time of year

Relax. You’ll be fine. Don’t rush, take a deep breath and if you can’t see the markings, ask someone. Most locals will know which is the way. And they’ll gladly help you along. They’re very accustomed to pilgrims. You’ll be fine. In a couple of days you’ll be cruising. And after that you’ll be laughing and skipping along!😊

You might feel a bit more confident if today you did a "dry run" from your hostal following this first paragraph of the route in Gronze up to the connection to the parque de San Miguel.

Thus you will know how to cross the city tomorrow; from then on all is much more simple.

St James' Way - Self-guided 4-7 day Walking Packages, Reading to Southampton, 110 kms
Just check at each road junction, I crossed over the road in error once when I saw a rucksack in front. When I got to some traffic lights I stood there looking for the marker when a local pointed me across to the side of the road.

It is super well marked. As Anniesantiago said it is a nice walk around the lake and you will see alot more locals who are jogging, walking in the morning then pilgrims. When you leave remember that arrows can be on sign posts, walls, sidewalks (with arrows or shells) official camino markers, stones or trees. Believe me you will get the hang of it no time.
Ask at your pension where the camino is and get there and follow the arrows.
You can also download the Buen Camino or Wise Pilgrim app and they have gps maps that will insure you will never get lost. Follow some pilgrims as you walk and go with the flow. Najera is a long way to go for your first day so you may want to stop sooner. Don't follow the stages in guides follow what your body tells you to do. Buen Camino

It is Sunday so I can’t get my cell phone set up. I am debating about waiting here and getting my phone set up, then leave closer to noon. I have a reservation. Otherwise I can’t use the apps without data, correct?

Most of the apps with maps - Wise Pilgrim, Buen Camino, Camino Ninja, etc. work offline. You do need to download their files while you are online though. However, you might want to get you phone set up while you are in a larger city.

I’m sure by now you have met other pilgrims since you left Logroño. I’m in Boadilla del Camino today, I started in Saint Jean 12 days ago and it was very busy for the first week up to Logrono, approximately 80 pilgrims each day.

The past few days have been much quieter probably about 25 pilgrims each day. The weather is great and the walking is beautiful.

The one from Galicia (the round) and the one from Castilla & Leon. Individually numbered and made by the same people that make the ones you see on your walk.

Yes. I think I will stay here and get my phone working brfore I take off tomorrow, otherwise it’ll be a few days. I will get I later than I had hoped with the heat, but, hey…all I have is time!

Leaving Logrono tomorrow. A short walking day to Navarrette just to acclimatize myself. I plan on strolling. I may stop at a phone store out of town to try to get a data plan. I am actually wondering if I need it. Mostly I have made calls on what’s app, or messenger for free while on wifi. If I had an emergency I can just use my Canadian plan and pay $15 for the day. Any thoughts,

Many people manage using just wifi along the way.

I am one who has only used wifi on my Caminos along with a similar messaging app to Whatsapp for family chats, and have managed just fine. I have never purchased any overseas phone plan. No right or wrong here; it's what we individually are comfortable with and meets our particular needs while we are away from home.

The 2024 Camino guides will be coming out little by little. Here is a collection of the ones that are out so far.
Turn off the cellular setting and/or put the phone on airplane mode so you don’t accidentally use your Cdn cell plan.

I’ve always managed with just local wifi in Europe. Nearly every bar has it. I think there might be one or two nights only where it wasn’t available.

Great advice 👍

Don't worry about getting lost or the lack of pilgrims. 1400 have been claiming the Compostela, and, considering that the Frances is the most well trod, you'll find some around soon. As steted earlier, yellow arrows ans shells Wi guide you. Enjoy and buen camino

This is a well marked route and I am sure there will be other Pilgrims. You really will not need any apps.

@Wanderingfriend
Have you looked into getting your credencial stamped at the Concatedral de Santa Maria de la Redonda? I don't know for sure if that is where pilgrim credenciales are stamped in Logrono. But it is customary to do this and possibly to get a blessing at the beginning of a camino walk. And you are staying very close to the Concatedral. Go out the front door of Pension la Bilbaina, turn right, then right again at the first corner onto Portales and the cathedral will be on your left in two blocks. It has masses on the hour all morning from 9 am, if you are a Catholic,(this might be only on Sundays, I am just going from their website) or maybe you would like to observe and have a few moments to consider what it means to you to be beginning this pilgrimage.
I once spent a Sunday evening in Logrono and did not see any pilgrims, except for those staying in my pilgrim hostel. I was totally focused at the time on the impossibility of getting anything to eat on a Sunday evening in Logrono. Everything was closed except for the shops which sold candy, apparently a Sunday treat for the children, but not adequate for me after my day's walk. I don't remember anything about the city except candy stores and my fruitless attempt to find dinner. But I remember the walk out of Logrono, which is long, but very pleasant. Buen camino, enjoy your walk.

The first edition came out in 2003 and has become the go-to-guide for many pilgrims over the years. It is shipping with a Pilgrim Passport (Credential) from the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela.
The first few times I found getting out of Logroño through the city streets required watching carefully for the arrows (and I can never pass the Drunken Duck without stopping for a cafe!) but all that ceases once onto the walking path to the lake.

The focus is on reducing the risk of failure through being well prepared. 2nd ed.

I ate there in May 2019 (good quality but haven't a clue what it was as I couldn't translate the menu) as I wanted to eat earlier than my accommodation was going to provide. Perhaps it was me but I couldn't find too many places open, it was raining so I didn't go too far.

I think you can do much better than that using Orange or vodafone. Get a sim card from them and you will get a new Spanish number. I call my wife and kids on Whatsapp or Facetime. My wife can call my from our home internet phone, No one has to change your number as Whatsapp automatically does it. You can get really good calling plans with loads of data for 15 or 20 euros. Having the ability to call ahead to see if an albergue is open or to make a reservation sure comes in handy.

I loved Logrono and its pretty main street; quiet in the afternoon, but festive with locals in the early evening on a lovely spring day. I was treated to my favorite meal on that Camino for my birthday...it was excellent, although unfortunately I do not recall the restaurant.

I know that street well and have eaten in a few restaurants and they were all good. I too love Logrono. It is a city but has a much more laid back feeling to me than Burgos, Leon, Santander, Bilboa etc. I really like Logrono alot.

Totally agree, it's much more laid back, and In addition, on that favorite street we stumbled (no pun intended🙂) on a bar with outside seating that sold beer and wine for only 1 euro each!😃
Edit- We went back two years later in 2017 and it was still a buck.

Can't beat that with a stick!!!!
Around November 1, 2019 I walked through Logrono. It was a super windy day and I was kind of tired to say the least. I was looking forward to staying there. Unfortunately it turned out to be a holiday and also the Prime Minister of Spain had come with other officials so the city was packed and I was told there was not a bed to be found. I walked down to the Pilgrim Hostel and the line was really long. I was told the Donativo was open but it had a big line also. Our favorite street was mobbed so instead of taking a chance I may get into the albergue or donativo I walked on to Navarrete.
