How do you train for the Camino?

Like many, my wife and I did not know how to go about preparing for our first Camino. Although we were both active sports types when we were younger, we were definitely not into the longer endurance type activities. So, this was all a mystery to us. I did some research and found Prof. Tim...

    Baby Baztán in Winter?

Hi Mr Tornley Huge apologies for not getting back sooner. Got sidetracked and didn't go on the forum for half a year :( Not sure how to explain where the 3rd photograph was except on the Belate Pass somewhere so I attached the link for the photo's location info. Technology is just great isn't...

Just completed the Baztan in May

Ouch..just ouch! I have a reconstructed knee myself.....rugby....but it rehabbed nicely and doesn't sound as bad as yours. I any case, I saw that someone else suggested a doable itinerary on another thread, so you can brake the hike down. And the only real downhill that I can remember is after...

Just completed the Baztan in May

Hi again Mr Thornley Thinking back on the hike my overall impression was of walking predominantly on paved or gravel road surfaces. But funnily enough, I asked my wife what she remembers and she said walking in fields!!!! Not sure if we were on the same Camino!:) However, I went through our...

    Baby Baztán in Winter?

I know some have done it, and as much as I like the Baztan, I would avoid it during the high winter if there is snow in the passes (I don't know if it snows there since it's close to the coast). On the passes, the trail sometimes follows along the side of the mountain with a precipice going down...

Recommendations / Advice for a very slow , 10 day Baztan

You're welcome, Mr Thornley. And enjoy your time in the Basque Country.

    Markings on Baztan

If posted a closeup of the sign post and you can see it shows both directions for the Baztan but with other routes (except if I'm reading it wrong).

    Markings on Baztan

Just to clarify ...... we were just following the Buen Camino app's route. The app clearly shows that you are not supposed to go into town but to cut left up the hill just before the roundabout at the entrance to the town. I wasn't looking at the app all the time but remembered that we had to...

    Total ascent

Good observation and one will be surprised at the difference between the advertised and the actual elevation gain or loss. Although not on the Frances, I had my app going when walking the Baztane this year and found the following. To get over the Pass of Otsondo we started in Urdax at around...

    Markings on Baztan

We found the markings for Baztan quite good and only had a problem once at Souraide. If you look at the attached photo, we somehow came down the hill on the right and went into town while we should have come up the main road and up the hill on the right before going into the town. The little...

How Difficult Is The Camino Baztan?

I don't know if you've done the walk already but if you have, you would have found that there are these two passes between Urdaz and Elizondo and between Berroeta and Olague that make the 19km and 20km feel double the distance. You might want to rethink those stages.

Recommendations / Advice for a very slow , 10 day Baztan

Hi again Mr Thornley My recollection of the towns on the Baztan, apart from the one of two larger towns like Elizondo, is of little villages with a church and not much more. And although we walked through most without stopping, I am sure that they each have their own history and charm and...

Recommendations / Advice for a very slow , 10 day Baztan

Hi Mr Thornley If I read your post correctly, it sounds like you will be walking the Baztan next year during the Oz winter. So, if that’s correct you still have some time to finalize your planning. My family and I did the Baztan during May of this year and I posted a recounting of our experience...

Just completed the Baztan in May

My family and I started the Camino Baztan in Bayonne on May 5 and ended 7 days later in Pamplona on May 11. This Camino proved to be a beautiful, beautiful route through the Pyrenees as reported on numerous websites and in this forum. The route, however, had a lot of surprises in store that we...

To carry or not to carry an hair dryer?

Find the reaction to this incredible! There is another discussion on the forum re hairdryers at https://www.caminodesantiago.me/community/threads/hairdryer-on-the-walk.52022/#post-572868 (not sure if this is the right way to point someone there). In any case, my wife took her hairdryer on the...
