We stayed at Orisson on the advice of another pilgrim, so glad we did. Not only did it break up the long trek to Roncesvalles, but we met people there that became our Camino family. I might opt for the Val Carlos route next time though. And that first 8 km is up to Orisson is very steep...
I enjoyed my stay at Beilari. I do eat meat but enjoy veggie meals on occasion. As for the introduction game, I actually enjoyed it very much. And bonded with many of the participants. But I agree, not everyone's cup of tea, and if you are on the fence, don't feel you have to go there.
One more thing, not sure if already mentioned, but there are a few places in St Jean Pied de Port where you can purchase walking sticks, very reasonable. I appreciated having them for many of the reasons mentioned above.

I love that reservoir area, did not know you could walk around the other way. The only drawback would be missing the cafe, it was lovely to sit at a table there overlooking the reservoir enjoying a cafe con leche!

I loved staying at Beilari, and did bond with many of those people - but you can certainly bond (or not, depending on your experience) all along the Camino. And I also recommend booking at Refuge Orrison, you will be happy you stopped!
