Ten Years Ago Since "The Way"

We were planning to do El Camino a while back before the movie was released. We knew it from our Catholic background, Paulo Coelho's book and from another movie about a young man adventures in Spain (can't remember the name). We watched the movie before our trip in 2013 and after our trip we can...

    All About Osprey

Like boots, you need to try the packs with a full load to see how it works with your body and not just on a flat terrain. You need to see how it works over different terrains like the types you are going to find on your Trip. Here at REI, they will fit a pack to your body, and the last time...

    All About Osprey

There are 2 Brands of packs that I like a lot. Osprey and Gregory. I gave my older Atmos to my youngest son and he has used it extensively during his world travels. My Osprey is the Talon 22 for day trips and for traveling around. I bought my Talon at a REI garage sale for less than 1/2 price...

    New Backpack

My 2 cents. You can't go wrong with an Osprey pack, my 2 preferred brands are Osprey and Gregory. My wife took the Gregory Z-38 and she loved the pack.

    Medical first aid kit

The only other thing I would consider taking (by experience) is some cream to treat the rash from Ortiga (Latin Urtica) and it depends on the season. The Ortiga grows next to non-poisonous plants (I think from the same family) and it will penetrate light hiking pants. Early Spring it will grow...

Is carrying your own backpack a thing of the past?

IMHO, it is a pilgrimage with all its trials and tribulations. But I think it has become more of a check item in your bucket list and/or a cheap vacation. I understand if you are physically you cannot catty a pack but you don't have to carry everything and travel light.

    Backpack = Favorite new toy

My 2-cents comments. My wife and I did the Camino a couple of years ago. I had set a maximum weight goal (skin off) and allow some weight for daily snacks/food that I knew I was going to eventually carry. After trying several packs at our local REI store, we picked the Gregory Jade Z38 for my...

    From Sarria....what time of year?

Hortiga is a weed that grows among the regular weeds. In the spring the weeds will be covering the sides of the trails, it will go through pants and give you a terrible rash. My wife got it bad.

    From Sarria....what time of year?

My wife and I did it at the end of April, beginning of May. It was not crowded (it was just starting) and the fields were green due to the tremendous amount of rain they had last year (it stopped a few days before we started). We had a couple of day with rain but, I would have called them more...

    New to the camino!

What my wife and I did was to pack bread and cheese to eat during the day walk and have "lunch" at our day destination. We also ended up eating the Menu of the day, it's a bit more expensive but you get a several main dish choices. I think even with all of the walking we gained weight with all...

Getting a Cell phone in Spain

A late update. I got a Verizon Samsung SIII, according to their tech support people the phone is already unlocked and only needs a Spanish SIMM and no need for their roaming (expensive) data package. But it did not work as a smartphone. I got a Vodafone SIMM card in Sarria and at their store...

    Backpack concern

My wife tried the Golite Jam 35 and did not like it, she did like her Gregory Jade 38 a lot I took my Golite Jam 50 (Camino Frances) and carried over 20 Lbs confortably, I saw a German Pilgrim using the smaller Golite and he liked it. In retrospect if I had know how bad the Camino was due to...

Where did you have a good Menu del Dia on the Camino Frances

Teodora's in Arzua, one of the best meals I had in Spain. I had the ribs and the meat was so tender it slipped off the bone. And it was very tasty. My wife had the Merluza And the Caldo Gallego and They were equally good. And I hear the place was even better when the current Chef's mother used...

Osprey Sirrus 36 vs Kestral 38 or lighter?

My wife tried the GoLite Jam 35 and did not like the frameless pack, she went back to the Gregory Jade 38. Depending on what you plan to carry and how tight you pack it, you can probably use the Jade 34 or even the Jade 28 She really liked the pack, lots of pockets, 3 ways to load it...

    We did it !!!

Well, after looking at the Albergues and the comments about the not so quiet "quiet time", we decided to stay in Pensions instead. My wife is a light sleeper and I wanted a rested and not so grumpy trek mate :) So what we did not needed, remember that is based on our own experience and weather...
