In March 2019 on a very rainy evening I was with a small group from Portland and they organised for one of the local restaurants suggested by the hospitaleros to provide for a ‘pilgrim’s menu’(incl.wine )for the evening meal. I think the average cost for the meal was around 12euros per head and...
Unfortunately, that’s the way the local community View the pilgrims as a cash cow !
Galicia notably has the worse reputation for this. They also removed the doors to the showers, which is bizarre !
The municipal alberque in Estella in March 2018 had its front door locked until 7am in the morning. They also turned off the lights and power at the fuse box so we all sat in the dark in the kitchen and entrance lobby waiting for the Hospitalero to arrive From outside to unlock the front door...
The old albergue was relatively new in an upscale residential square ( just after the railway bridge?).
I suspect they are unlocking this higher residential value to create local jobs on both sites.
in my opinion I think the best time to walk the Vdlp is in March. The prettiest flowers and warmest days are just bearable in the south below Salamanca. That long roman road to torremejia in particular would be an absolute killer in any warmer month. The rest is a mere walk in the park ! We...
That was our room ! They were renovating last spring so we had dash across the courtyard for the
Bathroom! And the small swimming pool which was very bracing in March after the long walk up the mountain from Monesterio ! Very palatial and grande entrance and lobby!
This is one if the gems on the VdLp.
I was one of the pilgrims arriving in the afternoon as the staff were having lunch and Don Blas personally greeted me at the door and invited me to lunch !!
An volunteer who was a trained nurse bound up my blisters for me and allowed me to rest for a couple...
I have a feeling that the particular scene was shot out of sequence after that shown of o’cebriero.
I think i may have have seen the cemetery at the village of Hospital AFTER O’Cebriero and before the descent to Tricastela and before the Big Statue of St James by the side of the road.
Although...
The albergue in
I think the municipal Albergue at Azofra, after Najera , was new built and was very spacious twin bedded rooms and very light and airy from the huge glass windows. Showers and toilets on each floor and huge corridors ( bigger than the rooms ) where you could also sleep on the...
The Berghaus was great after Orrision as you approach the pass and the wind makes itself felt.
It was absolutely brilliant approaching O’Ceberio and afterwards for keeping out the rain.
You can sleep in it if you need to rough it !
Badly under rated winter and spring wear.
Heartily endorse Gaucelmo and the confraternity of St James. I attach my pics from may 2018, with abject apologies for forgetting the name of my walking companion from Geneva!! Absolutely, sublimely and brilliant afternoon tea on the lawn!!
I do regret not having the time to do the silent...
We arrived after 4 0’clock in the afternoon and my companions ( all male ) used the showers in the basement next to laundry room ! I think I was following the crowd and never realised they weren’t unisex !
