Not true. So long as you are always adding fresh clean water and nothing else, you don't need to do any intensive cleaning while you are on the trail.
I cleaned mine zero times last year during my 40+ days on the Camino.
Sorry that you had such a “traumatic” experience…. but even more sorry that for a few Euros/ dollars you were so concerned about being ripped off for breakfast that your energy was directed away from the beautiful coastal camino you are walking...

I love this little coin purse. It is waterproof, holds just enough coins to remind me to spend them before it gets "too heavy", and fits perfectly in my backpack hip belt. I got mine from Amazon.
