Great pick, Chrissy!
At 73. I was inspired by a fellow on this forum named Jose, who had finished the CF at 75.
I did my first at 73, my second at 76 and I'll do the Portugese +Muxia to cerebrate my 80th.
I now have friends all over the world from my Caminos.
They are all warm, gracious and...
Alan-try emailing Orisson. I did a few years ago (persistently) and they finally answered me with a yes.
Very nice people...and explain your son-in-law has a reservation.
I agree with the others...see a physical therapist for specific exercises.
Short of that swim doing side stroke or a modified backstroke (both arms at once vs alternating arms), if you have a place to do so. Great for the back, easy on the spine and builds cardiovascular fitness.
I'm 79 as well and at this age, I'd not travel without insurance.

I used New Balance Gobis, which were great.
Remember to size up one notch.
Your feet will thank you down the trail!
This was in Leon, where I switched shoes (from my care package mailed from Madrid 😊)
Walking poles...YES!!
Buen Camino
Trail runners are fine! That's what I wore. But, make sure they're broken in.
If you're doing the full CF, consider having a second pair somewhere around Leon. I had made a reservation there ahead of the start and sent myself a "care package" to that place from the Madrid Aorport. 250 miles and...
Here's some advice Re:Samos: take your time.
From Tricastela to Samos is one of the most beautiful trails on the CF.
The one from Samos to Sarria is almost as beautiful and so varied it's amazing.
Don't bus from Samos to Sarria!
You'll miss the forest trails, gorgeous little farms and lovely...
I agree with others.
Book Orrison in way advance.
Stay in SJPDP and enjoy the hike up (as in REALLY UP) to Orrison and relax on their balcony overlooking the “mountains “.
Or…keep on from SJPDP over the Pyrenees to Roncesvalles. Beautiful route!
