    A plus of staying near Atocha is that you are also close to the Reina Sofia museum. I know tourism isn't st the top of your agenda, but a museum visit to see Guernica could enrich your camino experience.

    Maybe it's a personal preference, but my advice: yes, absolutely, wash socks at the end of the day and they can dry overnight.

    I tried hiking shoes (merrell) but ended up with blisters as I tried to beak them in. So I switched (very happily) to trail running shoes, INNOV-8. Worked well for me.

    I was planning to mention this book in my reply to this thread .. I really enjoyed this book. Yes, controversial with some, but very thought provoking in light of current issues, and an important perspective on an important period of Spanish history.

    So many options, so little time! I can recommend 'Barcelona' by Robert Hughes (a wonderful history, very engaging), 'Homage to Catalonia' by George Orwell (civil war reporting), and 'In the Night of Time' by Antonia Munoz Molina (a novel set in the time of the civil war, a fascinating read).

    Agree .. I used an Arc'Teryx waist pack, 2 pockets, big enough for my small camera and documents, could also be configured to sling over my shoulder. Worth the money.

    Thank you for your thoughtful reflection on this question! "A lifetime of being African is all the prep you'll need .." resonates. Or a lifetime of being a woman, or in my case, a lifetime of being gay, or being anything considered different, 'exotic', risky, dangerous, powerless, etc...

    Trail running shoes worked for me. I tried Merrill's prior to leaving for the Camino in April but they were stiff and gave me blisters. So I switched to Innov-8 trail running shoes with insoles. They worked well, enough tread but not too much, flexible, reasonably light. After wet days on...

    April-May can be a great time of year. This year, I started April 25 from Logrono and enjoyed moderate weather, moderate crowds, and had a wonderful experience.
