Why not join the GR65 at Air-sur-l'Adour and walk straight through to Pamplona? The week walking through the foothills on the GR65 would get you into fine fettle for the climb over the Pyrenees. The countryside is beautiful, in fact everything is beautiful there.

I think the issue is that cobblestones/setts can become quite slippery when wet which poses a challenge.
You are of course quite right, walking on them for any length of time kills your feet. I have been wearing Meindl trail shoes for 8 or 9 years and they help, but only a bit.

We had to bail from the Norte on day 1 of the 2nd half (Ribadesella) in 3019 when my mother died unexpectedly. Thanks to COVID it was 2022 when we were able to resume, but the Camino was there for us, as it will be for you when you able/ready.

Caroline and I walked from Irun to Ribadesella in 2018 and your description brought back so many great memories. That first day to San Sebastian can be pretty challenging.
